Freshman forward helped Tech down two top-25 teams last week

Charlotte, N.C. – After helping lead Georgia Tech to a pair of victories over top-25 teams last week, including a 21-point performance in the Yellow Jackets’ Atlantic Coast Conference opener against No. 7 Duke, freshman forward Baye Ndongo has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week.

Ndongo made 9-of-11 shots from the floor in Tech’s 72-68 win over the Blue Devils Saturday, including a layup that tied the game at 68-all with 1:20 remaining, then a dunk for the go-ahead points with 44 seconds on the clock. In between, Ndongo made a steal to prevent one possible Duke score, then blocked a shot in the paint to prevent another with three seconds remaining. The 6-9 native of Mboro, Senegal added five rebounds, two assists and a steal, and blocked four shots in the game.

Earlier in the week, Ndongo had three assists, six rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot to help the Jackets upend No. 21 Mississippi State in the ACC/SEC Challenge.

For the week, Ndongo averaged 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and hit 10-of-18 shots from the floor. He added five assists, three steals and five blocked shots, and turned the ball over just once in each game.

Tech returns to action Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m., taking on Georgia at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
