A historian in Mich St site seems to have a hate for Bear Bryant and integration and has several podcasts. In this was he says McAshan was the first black QB in he south. @halfmetaljacket I’m sure can fill in details but here is he post:

Episode 35:

The End Game: Race and Sports - Tom Shanahan Report

--- Georgia Tech Eddie McAshan was Deep South's first Black starting QB, 9-12-1970.

--- McAshan and fellow Georgia Tech pioneer Joe Harris crossed paths with Duffy in 1972 game at Michigan State.
On the sidelines were Duffy, Jimmy Raye in first year as MSU assistant, Charlie Baggett sitting out transfer year
and Tyrone Willingham as walk-on freshman. Joe Harris and Charlie were teammates at EE Smith in Fayetteville.

--- Story covers how Bud Carson was believed to be fired for starting McAshan. Carson stuck his neck out with
McAshan in 1969. Yet another example of coaches who stuck out their necks without the job security Bear Bryant
had while Bryant dragged feet into 1970s. McAshan led win over integrated South Carolina on 9-12-70, the same day of the
USC-Alabama 1970 myth. The myth has been told as if it was a singular game. There had been many
1960s integration moments that made the 1970 USC-Alabama game possible.
