BASEBALL Former Georgia Tech standout Whit Robbins...

will be inducted into the Calhoun-Gordon County Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday. He had an incredible high school career at Calhoun High before making his way to The Flats. Pretty darn good football player at Calhoun too.

One of my old friends in Calhoun messaged me a little earlier today about this. Not sure how I missed it since it is happening in my old neck of the woods, but I thought you guys might be interested to know it. Congratulations to Whit!

Volleyball Adds Shelly Fanning to Staff

Fanning brings 10 years of playing experience to the GT bench

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech volleyball head coach Michelle Collier has added former All-American and current member of the Atlanta Vibe (Professional Volleyball Federation), Shelly Fanning to the coaching staff as a player development assistant. Fanning, who carries 10 years of playing experience with her to The Flats, will work closely with the team, assisting in practice and match planning while also serving as a mentor for the student-athletes.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to join the coaching staff at Georgia Tech,” Fanning said. “I am so grateful for this remarkable opportunity and I look forward to contributing my passion and energy to help achieve great things together this season!”

Fanning comes to The Flats in the midst of a 10-year playing career, most recently taking part in the first season of the Professional Volleyball Federation as a member of the Atlanta Vibe. She spent her college years at Baylor, where she was a three-time AVCA All-American (2017-19), a vital member of the Bears 2019 Final Four team and the first Baylor player to achieve all-conference status four times. She graduated, twice, from Baylor with a bachelor's degree in communications and a master's degree in sports management.

After leaving college volleyball in 2019, Fanning went abroad, playing parts of four seasons in Liga de Voleibol Superior Femenino (Puerto Rico) and one season with IŁ Capital Legionovia Legionowo, in Poland. Like many American players, Fanning took advantage of the growing professional opportunities at home, taking part in the Athletes Unlimited Pro League in 2023 before signing with the Atlanta Vibe for the inaugural 2024 PVF season (January-May). With the Vibe, Fanning played in all 25 matches as a starting middle blocker and finished with 53 blocks and 171 kills to help lead her team to a semifinal berth.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Update story on Fellowship Christian '26 duo CJ Givers and Jonathan Granby

Recruiting never stops. Georgia Tech got a huge recruiting win with Josh Petty on Monday but already looking ahead to a pair of playmakers at the school for 2026.

GT / FSU Series - Underrated

Tech Florida State is an underrated series that is one of the biggest casualties in conference expansion.

Tech started the series 7-0-1 before Bowden got the program moving.

FSU then went 7-0 through 1998 during their hey day, blowing us out in every game except that disastrous 1992 game (their first win in the series).

1999 was the start of what has turned into an incredibly competitive series. We lost the next games but were all very good games (and in a couple of instances, classics). We would have finally broken through under Gailey if the series hadn’t been halted by expansion. 08 and 09 were absolute classics. The next two were also great games in the ACCCG (1 of which I thought we were undermanned substantially but somehow managed to possess the ball with a chance to win at the end). We won the next two (one a classic the other a hard fought win with a true freshman Sims in his first game). We then lost in a blowout as Key was trying to turn around a disastrous start to 2022 after Scoot was canned.

Looking forward to another entry in an underrated series

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Coach Speak story with Petty's head coach John Thompson...

And a bonus "Dad Speak" at the end with Josh Petty's father James.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING My first Futurecast is in...

For Georgia Tech to land DL Blake Belin.

(But there is no reason for you guys to worry about it not being for Petty. I tried to put one in for him to pick Georgia Tech first, but apparently the rule is you can't enter a futurecast within 24 hours of his decision. I'll know that now going forward. So consider this my de facto futurecast for Georgia Tech to land Fellowship Christian OL Josh Petty.)

GT Golf: Three Yellow Jackets Set for 124th U.S. Amateur

NCAA Champion Tai, 2024 grad Forrester, incoming freshman Hansson in field

U.S. Amateur website

THE FLATS – Past, present and future Yellow Jackets – rising junior Hiroshi Tai, 2024 graduate Bartley Forrester and incoming freshman Albert Hansson – are set to compete in the 124th edition of the United States Amateur Championship, which begins Monday at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

They are part of a 312-player field which will play 36 holes of stroke play Monday and Tuesday at Hazeltine National and Chaska Town Club. The top 64 players after 36 holes will be seeded in match play competition which begins Wednesday and concludes with a 36-hole championship match next Sunday. Afternoon and evening coverage of match play will be streamed on Peacock and broadcast on Golf Channel.

Tai, the reigning NCAA Champion, is in the field for the first time. The native of Singapore outlasted many of the nation’s top amateur golfers to win the national collegiate title by one shot in May at the Omni LaCosta Resort and Spa. A first-team All-American in 2024, the rising junior is ranked No. 22 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and has won three collegiate tournaments.

Forrester, who completed a five-year career on The Flats in May and won two collegiate events, is competing in the U.S. Amateur for the fourth time. The Gainesville, Ga., native, ranked No. 67 in the World, advanced to the round of 32 in match play in 2022 in Paramus, N.J.

Hansson, one of the top-ranked junior players in Europe, also is competing in his first U.S. Amateur. The native of Fiskebäckskil, Sweden is No. 69 in the WAGR after finishing 19th at the European Men’s Amateur Team Championship in July and 50th at The Amateur Championship in June.

They will seek to join an illustrious group of Yellow Jackets who have won the coveted Havemeyer Trophy, including the legendary Bobby Jones, who captured five U.S. Amateur titles, the last of which completed his Grand Slam in 1930. More recently, Matt Kuchar won the U.S. Amateur in 1997 between his freshman and sophomore years at Tech, while Andy Ogletree and Tyler Strafaci won titles in back-to-back years in 2019 and 2020.
