Romello Height

What an effort. On the 4th and long completion on their previous possession, he got a hand to the face and stopped on the play to complain to the ref, could have kept going and maybe gotten to Cam.

The very next series he doesn’t beat his man off the snap but continues and never quit and forced the fumble. Gotta love a kid making a play to seal the game when he got screwed earlier.

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech wraps up the Peach State Classic, the two-game multi-team event it is co-hosting with Georgia, Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts Texas Southern at McCamish Pavilion.

Tech dropped a 105-93 contest Sunday to North Florida in the opener of the event, while Texas Southern fell to the Bulldogs in Athens, 92-64.

The Yellow Jackets are 1-1 following Sunday’s loss, which came on the heels of an 85-62 win in their season opener against West Georgia.

The Tigers, a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, went 16-17 overall in 2023-24 and 12-6 in SWAC competition. They dropped a tight 78-69 decision at Xavier in their season opener, and routed Texas A&M-San Antonio, 100-69, before their loss to Georgia.

Tuesday’s game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, available on the ESPN app. Radio coverage is on the Georgia Tech Sports Network by Legends Sports and flagship station 680 the Fan (680 AM/93.7 FM). The Tech broadcast is also available on SiriusXM channel 388 and on the SiriusXM app.

LAST TIME OUT

Despite placing five players in double-figure points and scoring 93 points, which matched a high for the Yellow Jackets under Damon Stoudamire, Georgia Tech lost for the first time this season, 105-93, to North Florida Sunday at McCamish Pavilion.

The Yellow Jackets spread around the offense, with five players finishing with 10 or more points. Baye Ndongo delivered his first double-double of the season, and seventh of his career, finishing with a team-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Kowacie Reeves, Jr. (17), Luke O’Brien (15), Lance Terry (14) and Javian McCollum (14) rounded out the double-digit scorers. Naithan George filled the stat sheet, making a team-leading seven assists to go along with a career high six rebounds, five points and a steal.

The Jackets got off to a hot start offensively, pouring in 10 of their first 13 field goal attempts to go in front, 24-16 after only 6:37 of game time. Ndongo was crucial in the early success, making all three of his shot attempts while adding in two rebounds and a pair of assists, both to O’Brien on the back door.

North Florida battled back, eventually tying things at 26-26. The offensive showcase continued for both teams throughout the half with UNF holding a four-point lead after 20 minutes (53-49) and both teams shooting over 50 percent from the field. The Ospreys maintained their offensive rhythm into the second, going on a 22-4 run to open a deficit as large as 20 points (80-60). Tech could only get as close as 10 points after that.

NOTABLE

• Texas Southern head coach Johnny Jones was an assistant coach at LSU for five meetings against Georgia Tech between 1986-90. Three of those were NCAA Tournament games, of which the Yellow Jackets won two, including a 1990 meeting in the second round in Knoxville, Tenn. That Tiger team included Shaquille O’Neal, Stanley Roberts and Chris Jackson.

• Tech is playing its first seven games of the season at McCamish Pavilion. The Jackets do not play away from home until Dec. 3 (ACC opener at North Carolina).

• Tech has a 42-to-22 assist/turnover ratio through two games.

• Tech has shot 47.6 percent from the floor in its first two games, and four players are above 50 percent (Kowacie Reeves Jr., is at 48 percent).

• Five Tech players scored in double digits against North Florida.

• Tech’s 93 points against North Florida matched a team high for the Jackets under Damon Stoudamire and were the most in a regulation game. The Jackets won 93-90 in overtime at Clemson last season (Jan. 16, 2024).

• Tech has connected on 10 or more threes in a game nine times under Stoudamire. The Jackets had 13 against North Florida, second most in any game.

Baye Ndongo has seven career double-doubles after posting 20 points (9-18 FG) and 10 rebounds against North Florida. It was his 21st double-figure scoring game.

• Oklahoma transfer Javian McCollum has scored in double figures 47 times in his career. He had 14 points and six assists against North Florida.

• McCollum has hit at least one three-pointer in 49 of 59 games dating back to the beginning of his sophomore year.

Kowacie Reeves, Jr., posted his 15th double-digit scoring game as a Yellow Jacket, 34th of his career, with 17 points (6-12 FG) against UNF.

• Reeves, Jr., has started all 34 games Tech has played with him on the team.

Naithan George has had seven assists in each of Tech’s first two games, recording 14 total against just two turnovers. He has dealt seven assists or more 10 times in his career. His career high in assists is 11 vs. Notre Dame, Jan. 9, 2024.

• Colorado transfer Luke O’Brien scored 15 points against North Florida, his 19th career double-digit game.

Lance Terry added 14 off the bench against UNF, his 14th double-figure game as a Yellow Jacket, 47th of his career.

• McCollum reached 1,000 points for his collegiate career when he scored 18 in Tech’s season opener against West Georgia. The 6-2 senior scored 400 or more in each of his last two seasons at Siena and Oklahoma.

• Terry began his final collegiate season 108 points shy of 1,000 for his career (he now has 915).

Props to Efford

I don’t know if we give Efford enough credit around here. Say what you want about any perceived lack of athleticism he may have or being in coverage issues, he seems to be the the leader as well as heart and soul of an improved defense this year. We just seem to be more physical when he is in the game. Kid plays with a ton of heart. Playing with that shoulder brace, sacked Ward, and hurt it again. Even then when he was walking off the field, he was trying to pump up the crowd with his one good arm. Kid’s a warrior.

For all the bad that can come with “mercenary” players, the transfer portal, NIL, and “business decision” plays, Efford and King and I’m sure many others on the team seem to give everything they have for their team on game day. Proud to be a fan of players like that.

FOOTBALL GT is the Cheez-It National Team of the Week

DALLAS (FWAA) – The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets ran for 271 yards on one side of the ball and contained the nation’s top offense on the other in a 28-23 win Saturday over No. 4 Miami. For taking down the previously undefeated Hurricanes and gaining bowl eligibility in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2013-14, Georgia Tech earned the Cheez-It National Team of the Week for games the weekend of Nov. 9, as selected by the All-America Committee of the Football Writers Association of America.

This is the fourth time for Georgia Tech (6-4) to win the weekly award and the first time since Oct. 24, 2015, when it won against then-No. 9 Florida State, 22-16.

The win marked a second consecutive season for the Yellow Jackets to hand Miami its first loss of the season. Georgia Tech welcomed the return of regular starting quarterback Haynes King after a month away due to injury. King completed 6-of-6 passes for 32 yards and a touchdown and ran 20 times for 93 yards and a touchdown. True freshman Aaron Philo also played a part, splitting time with King behind center – it was his 15-yard pass to Chase Lane gave Tech a 21-10 lead midway through the third quarter.

Philo completed perhaps the biggest pass of the game when he connected with high school teammate Bailey Stockton for a 27-yard gain on a third-and-18 play early in the fourth quarter. That led to a 5-yard touchdown run by King three plays later that stretched the Jackets’ advantage to 28-16.

Georgia Tech’s preparedness was displayed in a season-long 17-play drive that spanned the first and second quarters. The 75-yard drive that took 10:45 was the second-longest scoring drive in terms of time elapsed in program history (missing the record by two seconds, a 10:47 drive at Virginia from 2009).

Defensively, the Yellow Jackets held Miami’s offense, No. 1 nationally in scoring (47.4 ppg) and total offense (556.9 ypg) coming into the game, to 23 points and 436 yards. Miami had cut Tech’s lead to 28-23 with 6:07 to go and had the ball following a Tech punt. But two plays later, Georgia Tech defensive end Romello Height drilled Ward from behind and stripped the ball. Tech defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg fell on the loose ball to give the Jackets possession with 1:36 left and into victory formation.

The win was Tech’s first over a top-five opponent since a 28-23 win over No. 4 Virginia Tech in 2009, snapping a 13-game losing streak against top-five teams. Tech moved to 6-1 against nationally-ranked ACC opponents under head coach Brent Key, who was interim head coach for the final eight games of 2022 and has been the full-time head coach since 2023.

Georgia Tech has won four of the last six games against Miami.

“Play the next play, play with each other, play for each other,” Key said, sharing Georgia Tech’s defensive mindset. “I’m proud for these kids, this school, Georgia Tech, and the city of Atlanta.”

Georgia Tech is idle this week. The Ramblin’ Wreck will be back in a national broadcast on Thursday, Nov. 21, hosting NC State on ESPN at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Since 2002, the FWAA has named a National Team of the Week. Coming into the 2023 season, 284 teams have been honored, including 101 different Division I programs. Each honored team will receive a custom Cheez-It "care package" along with a hand-crafted game ball made in America by Dallas-based Big Game USA, the nation's leading manufacturer of custom footballs.

The other National Team of the Week nominees for the weekend of Nov. 9 were:

  • Alabama (7-2): Quarterback Jalen Milroe was unstoppable, helping the Crimson Tide to a 42-13 win over LSU in Death Valley. Milroe ran for 185 yards on only 12 carries and tied a career-high with four touchdowns on the ground. He added 109 yards through the air on 12-of-18 passing. Alabama rushed for 311 yards.
  • Ole Miss (8-2): The Rebels pressured No. 3 Georgia all afternoon with five sacks, five pass breakups, four forced fumbles and four QB hurries as they dismantled the Bulldogs 28-10 in front of a record crowd of 68,126 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Quarterback Jaxson Dart led Ole Miss to scores on seven of its 10 drives to hand Georgia its largest margin of defeat since the 2019 SEC Championship (a 37-10 loss to LSU).

FOOTBALL Brent Key Named Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week

Key receives honor for the second time this season after defeating No. 4 Miami

ATLANTA (Nov. 11, 2024) - Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. today announced that Georgia Tech head football coach Brent Key has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Presented by PNC Bank.

The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

Key and the Yellow Jackets upset previously unbeaten No. 4 Miami 28-23 on Saturday afternoon in Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field. Georgia Tech ran all over the Hurricanes, gashing Miami for 271 rushing yards on the way to capturing its second win over an AP Top-10 opponent this season. On the ground, quarterback Haynes King and running back Jamal Haynes led the Yellow Jacket offense with a combined 176 rushing yards and one touchdown a piece. In the pocket, freshman quarterback Aaron Philo and Haynes traded off for a combined 99 yards and two touchdowns in the air. Georgia Tech’s defense held Miami to a season low in points and yards on the day, helping to seal the win after forcing a Miami fumble with 1:36 to go in the game.

The win marked the Yellow Jackets’ first victory over an AP Top-5 opponent since 2009 and their second Top-10 victory this year. Earlier this season, Key was also named Dodd Coach of the Week after an upset win over then No. 10 Florida State in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland. Key now improves to 6-1 against ranked Atlantic Coast Conference opponents following Saturday's win. With the victory, the Yellow Jackets became bowl eligible, marking the first time since the 2013-14 seasons that the team will have gone back-to-back years making a bowl game.

"Coach Key is striving for success on and off the field this season,” said Chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation Jim Terry. "He’s our first repeat winner of this honor this season after two very impressive victories over top-ranked teams.”

Off the football field, Key's players have had success in the classroom during his tenure, recording a 944 Academic Progress Rate and an 88 Graduation Success Rate during the 2023 season. The Graduation Success Rate measures the number of student-athletes who graduate from their school within six years of entering.

In the community, Key recently competed in the Southern Company Peach Bowl Challenge charity golf tournament this spring, where he raised $10,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

“Coach Key is following in the mold of Coach Dodd with his outstanding leadership on and off the field at his Alma Mater,” said Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO and President Gary Stokan.

The Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank – along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2024 season. The winner of the 2024 Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank will be announced in Atlanta during the week of the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

FOOTBALL King named to Davey O'Brien Weekly Great 8 list...

From Georgia Tech Athletics

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King (Longview, Texas/Longview H.S.) has been named to the Davey O’Brien Award’s weekly Great 8 list in recognition of his performance in the Yellow Jackets’ win over No. 4 Miami (Fla.) this past Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field.

Playing through an injury that forced him to miss the previous two games, King accounted for 125 yards and two touchdowns while splitting time behind center with freshman Aaron Philo. King ran 20 times for 93 yards, shattering his previous career-high of 14 rushing attempts, and completed all six of his passes for 32 yards in the victory. His 5-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Malik Rutherford in the second quarter gave the Yellow Jackets a 14-10 lead that they never relinquished, and his 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter closed the scoring for the Jackets.

Led by King’s 93 rushing yards, the Yellow Jackets ran for 271 yards as a team (nearly 176 more than the 95.2 ypg that the Hurricanes had allowed coming in) and possessed the ball for 34:49, almost nine minutes more than the 25:58 of possession time that Miami opponents had previously averaged this season.

The win over previously unbeaten Miami (9-1, 5-1 ACC) made Georgia Tech (6-4, 4-3 ACC) bowl eligible for the second-straight season and clinched a .500-or-better record in Atlantic Coast Conference play for the third year in a row.

The Yellow Jackets, who are 4-0 at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field this season, close the home portion of their schedule on Thursday, Nov. 21 when they host NC State for a nationally televised ACC duel. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be shown nationally on ESPN.

The Davey O’Brien Great 8 recognizes the top performances by college football quarterbacks each week. One member of the Great 8 list will be named the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week on Tuesday.

King was previously named the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week for his performance in last season’s 46-42 win over No. 17 North Carolina.

Stadium Policy and Personal Seat / Chairbacks

For those checking multiple Tech site's, apologies for the cross post...

tl;dr: Anyone have any issue (or success) bringing a personal chairback into the stadium? Looking to maybe bring a couple for the NCST game, but I just have a fear we'll get prohibited from bringing them in (even if they are in compliance).

Bringing my in-laws to the NCST game on 11/21 for their first CFB ever. I am not a season ticket holder (though we probably should have ante'd back up this year - missed this past weekend, but that's it). Anyways, so no chairbacks for us. MIL/FIL are in their mid-late 70s and do well for the most part, but I am thinking it might be a better experience for them to sit with a chairback. I don't own any, but I may pick up a couple ahead of NCST for them.

Per GT website, here is what is permitted:

  • Stadium Seats smaller than 16″ wide (chair-backs/seat-backs/seat cushions) without arms, pockets, compartments, and/or cover

Here is what I am looking at:

LINK

There are nicer models, some wider, it seems, but I am trying to stay under the 16" W requirement (and no arms, pockets, etc.).
