FOOTBALL RECRUITING Is Georgia Tech emerging as a real contender in the recruitment of Rivals250 ATH Jalewis Solomon?

The answer, after talking to Solomon following his visit late last week, is yes.
(Solomon will be releasing a top schools list later this month)

HOOPS Notebook pre-Duke

Interestingly Rodney Howard spoke about the team lacking a Jose Alvarado type or a leader personality. He said he has tried to fill some of that void, but they don't have that person that will be an outright dog regardless of the score and push their teammates right now. He struck on the crux of the issue because that is what Jose Alvarado and Josh Okogie brought to the table the first five years. Rodney said the younger guys are still young and learning and they don't have that leadership piece yet either.

Josh Pastner said,

Looking back at Clemson, had some great looks, if you are 4-23 from 3, the scheme stuff doesn’t matter as much. Have to be ready for a really talented Duke team and they need to play really well.

Lance Terry is still out (hamstring) and a couple of guys banged up that could not play. Had what he called a MASH unit today in practice. Tristan is back tomorrow, Deivon didn’t practice due to a back issue, Rodney could practice with a hip issue but is tender, Miles Kelly hurt his ankle in practice and he was in and out.

On offensive sets, they’ve tried to score more in the paint and more high/low game, been good offensive rebounding team and they’ve been good in transition offense, but teams are getting back on them and they’ve got to score from the FT line and they don’t get to the FT line enough is it us or the officials. We have to get the FT line and we have to score more at the FT line. GT is third from last in FT attempts eight short of the bottom team ND and are last in FT shooting percentage.

They need to get to the FT line and he is sending tape into the league, but the overall situation is they need to play better, they are playing hard, but they are not playing better. They’ve got to score better, they’ve got to make open shots and hopefully if there is a 50/50 call the proper call is made.

Freds and Cyril are getting better and he would like to get them in.

Pastner said he doesn’t want to come off as making an excuse, but a lot of the guys are young and they are in different roles like Deebo or Miles or Jalon Moore or Deivon and Deivon has played well in the last three games, 10 rebs for him and there is not doubt there is pressure and I’m sure they sense it, but you can’t not have them shoot when they are open, but they’ve got to shoot with confidence. Miles turned down one or two of those in the last game, he is okay with them missing 10, if they turn them down they don’t get a great look and I pray they fall tomorrow.

He expects them to improve down the stretch in the season and have some momentum going into the ACC Tournament as the guys find some confidence.

BASEBALL Notes and Quotes from GT Media Days

I'm filling in for Russell today at GT media day

We spoke to Danny Hall for a while (audio up on the site) and three players.

I'll go around the infield to start

C- right now Jack Rubenstein will be the starting catcher, Tyler Minnick who enrolled early has been doing well, head is still spinning a little as he adjusts to college pitching behind the plate and hitting. They are really excited about those two. Nathan Smith they feel comfortable playing and Hall really likes a walk-on Aidan Jolly as well and thinks he has a chance in the future.

C- Rubenstein
1B- John Giesler is the starter for now, Jackson Finley has got some reps there but Carsten Sabathia is a guy they are watching. He can crush the ball, but is still adjusting to college pitching.
2B- R-Fr Kristen Campbell would be the 2B right now, very pleased with his development competing with Nicholas Romano
SS- Jadyn Jackson
3B- Drew Compton returning starter
RF- Stephen Reid returning starter
CF- Jake DeLeo
LF- Angelo Dispigna getting a lot of work there and is the favorite if he can hold up defensively, they want his bat in there.
DH- TBD, Sabathia is a possibility there along with several others

As far as the rotation goes, Hall said Logan McGuire is ahead of the pack of sophomore pitchers, he thinks he has a chance to be their ace. Camron Hill had a really great summer, really good summer in the New England Collegiate League and threw the ball well in the fall, they held him back some because of his summer work. Hill is vying for a rotation spot.

In the bullpen,

Aeden Finatari is in the bullpen right now, but has been throwing well. Dalton Smith who got hurt last year is back and has swing and miss stuff they view him as a one time through the lineup pitcher rather than a 6-7 inning guy because he is not overpowering. Hall thinks he can be a good set up man or them. He also likes Dawson Brown out of the bullpen two-pitch guy heavy sinking fastball and a slider and he can overpower hitters for an inning or two.

Cody Carwile is recovering from a knee injury and will be out a few weeks. He is just starting to play catch now coming back from that.

Hall said that Matt Wieters has been a huge help as a student assistant coach but he will not be at every game as he is trying to do school and be a dad on top of helping out with the baseball team, but the kids love having him around. Ruben

Damarius Bilbo

Maybe this is well known, but it was news to me. Bilbo is apparently an agent now. The following was from a story about the Steelers:
Outside linebacker Quincy Roche, a 2021 sixth-round pick of the Steelers, has agreed to a reserve/futures contract to return to Pittsburgh. Roche’s agent Damarius Bilbo confirmed a report by the New York Daily News.

OT: Sprint Football - Have you ever heard of such a thing?

Our QB1, one of the seniors at the school where I teach here in Metro Atlanta, was contacted by Army about playing for their sprint football team. I've never heard of such a thing. It's normal football but there is a 178 lb. weight limit for every player. The league has been around since prior to WWII. The league strongly emphasizes academic success, hard work, and football fundamentals. The current schools with teams are Alderson Broaddus University, Army West Point, Caldwell University, Chestnut Hill College, Cornell University, Mansfield University, the U.S. Naval Academy, the University of Pennsylvania, and St. Thomas Aquinas College.

When are we going to start losing kids in the portal to this craziness? 😆
