GTSB: Jackets Cruise Past Cavaliers, 5-2

Tech wins its fifth straight in conference opener

Box Score | Season Stats

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –
Georgia Tech softball (13-8, 1-0 ACC) rolled past Virginia (17-6, 0-1 ACC) for a 5-2 victory in its first conference contest on Friday night at Palmer Park. Having won five consecutive contests, the Yellow Jackets contained the Cavaliers from the circle, allowing just two hits on the day.

The White and Gold put the ball in the hands of senior hurler Blake Neleman (4-3) for most of the matchup as she received the win, allowing just one hit in 4.2 innings pitched. With four strikeouts on the night, the decorated Jacket moved into a tie with Erin Voeltz (2001-04) for second in program history in career strikeouts with 488 to date.

Fellow right hander Chandler Dennis picked up her first save of the season as well, allowing no runs on one hit in 2.1 innings of work.

At the plate, junior third and first basemen Mallorie Black and Abby Hughes both went yard as Black tied the team lead with five on the season while Hughes belted the first of her collegiate career.

Leadoff batter Emma Kauf was steady throughout the contest, going 2-for-3 while scoring a pair of runs. Sophomore second basemanGrace Connelly joined Kauf with multiple hits, most notably roping a two-RBI double as she finished 2-for-4 on the day. Junior designated player Sara Beth Allen also torched an RBI double to send in the first run of the day for the Jackets.

How it Happened

The Yellow Jackets wasted no time getting started, jumping ahead in the top of the first. Kauf led off the inning with a walk and stole second to move into scoring position, setting up an RBI double by Allen for a 1-0 advantage.

After a scoreless second, the Cavaliers slipped in front in the third, using an infield single to score a pair for a 2-1 lead.

Tech bounced right back in the top of the fourth, evening the tally with one swing of the bat as Black launched a solo shot over left center.

The White and Gold threw another jab in the fifth, putting runners on the corners with a leadoff walk and a Kauf single, allowing the Jackets’ RBI leader Connelly to increase her season tally to 20 with a two-RBI double for a 4-2 Tech lead.

The Jackets padded their lead in the top of the sixth as junior first baseman annihilated her first collegiate home run into the home bullpen. Dennis closed out the seventh, picking up her first save of the season to secure Georgia Tech’s first victory of conference play, 5-2.

Game Notes

  • Georgia Tech is on a five-game winning streak dating back to March 3.
  • Throughout the tear, the White and Gold have only surrendered five runs in five games.
  • The Yellow Jackets opened conference play with a victory for the first time since the 2020 season.
  • The White and Gold have now won six consecutive contests over Virginia and 11 of the last 12 matchups against the Hoos.
  • Neleman is now tied for second all-time in career strikeout with 488 to date. With 12 more punchouts, Neleman would become just the second Jacket to reach 500 in a single career.
  • Hughes’ dinger marked the first of her career.
  • With her solo shot, Black is now tied for the team lead in home runs with five bombs this season while owning eight in her career.
  • Kauf increased her hitting streak to six games as she's also reached base in eight straight contests.

HOOPS Georgia Tech Announces Change in Men’s Basketball Leadership

Tech, Pastner part ways after seven seasons; Wilkins to serve as interim head coach

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech announced a change in leadership in its men’s basketball program on Friday, as Tech and head coach Josh Pastner have parted ways. Anthony Wilkins will serve as the program’s interim head coach.

“Coach Pastner has been an incredible ambassador for Georgia Tech, treating others with the utmost respect and wearing his passion on his sleeve,” Georgia Tech director of athletics J Batt said. “His genuine care for student-athletes, our men’s basketball program, our athletics department and the Institute is unquestionable. On behalf of the Georgia Tech community, I want to offer my sincere gratitude to Josh, his wife, Kerri, and their family for their service to the Institute. We wish them all of the very best wherever their journey takes them next.”

Georgia Tech compiled a 109-114 record in Pastner’s seven seasons as head coach of the Yellow Jackets. He led the Jackets to three winning seasons, including in 2020-21, when Tech went 17-9 overall, won the ACC Tournament and earned its only NCAA Tournament berth since 2010.

“We have high expectations at Georgia Tech for all of our sports programs, and it is imperative that our storied men’s basketball program achieves a greater level of success,” Batt continued. “Our men’s basketball program is important to our department and to our institution. We will not shy away from expecting to consistently compete for ACC championships, NCAA Tournament appearances and sustained success. I am confident that with the combined strength of the Institute and our incredible fanbase, as well as the support of our city, we can reach our shared goals.”

Wilkins, who has been a member of Georgia Tech’s coaching staff since 2018, and was promoted to associate head coach in 2022, will serve as interim head coach while Tech conducts a national search for the 15th men’s basketball head coach in school history.

HOOPS The latest on Josh Pastner and GT 3/10

Don't expect much news over the next 72 hours. I've been told by multiple sources that the ACC like most leagues wants schools to hold off on formal announcements until after Selection Sunday.

J Batt has this pretty buttoned-up. I talked to high-level sources who indicated I might know before they do, these people typically know everything going on. One said it was 50/50 and another said they expect unless Pastner blows his meeting with Batt for Pastner to remain the coach. How President Cabrera fits into this as well, I'm not sure. I know he likes Pastner. The only way I see Batt making a change right now is if HE HAS SOMEONE HE WANTS ready to go.

Per my sources, Batt spent much of the ACC Tournament talking to people around the league to get a feel for where GT sits in terms of facilities, money and other factors as he aims to get a gauge for the work that needs to be done to build a sustainable winning program. That last part is the key to all of this. Batt is a sharp guy and he is aiming to build something that will be successful long-term in each of the major sports, not just making moves to make moves, but positioning the program for long-term success. One source I spoke to told me that Batt is the first person to truly grasp what is needed to be done at GT to be successful in sports and has the desire to actually work and fix it. That person said that they finally think GT has hired the right person for AD after screwing it up multiple times. Batt seems to be in it for the long term instead of just being a climber or a lifer.

I had a very solid basketball insider source who told me a few days ago that Stanford coach Jerod Haase and Pastner were both safe. Stanford announced last night that Haase will be retained.

Pastner and his assistants are working on portal targets.

On the NIL thing, they apparently have money committed and in place and are working to raise more. That was an immediate focus for Batt and his staff once he got in place.

Tech's troubles with support and the academic hurdles are well-known in coaching circles and multiple potential targets expressed disinterest in the job prior to Pastner's late run as well.

The one thing I can tell you is Batt has a plan and he knows what needs to be done to win having helped Nate Oats get there. He is playing a long game not just making changes to appease angry fans if the program isn't positioned to get the type of coach he wants. I'm sure he learned a lot through the football coaching search.

This isn't the job that it was when Paul Hewitt was hired.

Right now GT is at the bottom of the ACC in staff pay, last in NIL payouts and needs a new locker room and some updates in the facilities department. Football is on a much better footing with all of these things and now is the time where Batt has to fix the hoops part and Pastner if he stays has to win and has to adjust things quicker to win as well and recruit what he needs via the portal or he will be gone.

Mark Packer, this is how you make me look forward to the day when Tech is in another conference.

"Outsiders" tweet

I know what he meant here, but these state of NC guys are so freakin' tone deaf to their rhetoric. 44 years and we're still just in their way. UVA & Clemson are outsiders? What does that make Tech?? Screw the "Big Four." Imagine a universe where Wake Forest is "big" in any way. 🤢

No more Ken?

Looks like the AJC is looking for a new beat reporter
