So I’m in South Florida for a week of vacation, staying at a nice hotel in downtown Sarasota. My rate includes breakfast at the hotel, and I have eaten there every morning.

The morning I leave, I head down for breakfast. I am wearing my Columbia PFG shirt with GT logo. There are a dozen tables with diners.

Guy comes up to me, bypassing every other diner, interrupts me reading the paper, and asks if everything is ok. (First time anyone at restaurant has spoken all week except for taking my order, etc.). I say fine, and then he leans down and gets close to my ear. He says “Gooo dawgs” and starts to walk off.

I called him an FN A and told him to run along, be a good boy and “fetch my food”. Then I was worried he would spit in it and split before it came. I could not get the thought that he would tamper with my food out of my head, and was having flashback to Horacio Sanz’s special French toast from Road Trip.

Things went as well as they could for this one. I really wanted to use his first quote to Russell verbatim as the headline, but couldn't.

"shit, it was a great visit!"

Lamprecht, Steelman, Howe Add Golf All-America Honors

Golfweek magazine names Lamprecht, Steelman to first team, Howe as honorable mention

Golfweek All-America Teams

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s Christo Lamprecht, Ross Steelmanand Connor Howe added more All-America honors to their resumes on Tuesday. Golfweek magazine announced their 2022-23 teams and named Lamprecht and Steelman to its first team, and Howe to its honorable mention group. All three have previously been named All-Americans by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

It is the first time since 2011, and only the second time since the magazine began choosing an All-America team, that three Yellow Jackets have been named and two were listed on the first team. Kyle Scott and James White made Golfweek’s first team in 2011, while J.T. Griffin made the second team.

Ranked No. 7 nationally by Golfstat and No. 6 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Index, Lamprecht had a victory and three runner-up finishes in 2022-23. The junior from George, South Africa won the Inverness Intercollegiate in the fall, and in the spring finished second at the Watersound Invitational, the Linger Longer Invitational and The Goodwin. He was the team’s highest finisher in six of 11 stroke play events, and his 69.44 stroke average was one-hundredth of a stroke behind the Tech record of 69.43 set by Bryce Molder in 2000-01.

Steelman was the NCAA Championship individual runner-up at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., and finished the spring No. 5 in the Golfstat individual ranking and No. 8 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Index. The Columbia, Mo., native finished 12th or higher in his final eight events in 2022-23 and delivered the clinching points for Georgia Tech in both of its ACC championship matches and its NCAA semifinal victory over North Carolina. His 69.50 stroke average was the third-best in program history.

Howe, a staple in the Tech lineup for five years, enjoyed his best year in 2022-23, posting five top-10 finishes to come in No. 33 in the final Golfstat individual ranking and No. 38 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Index. The Ogden, Utah native tied for third place at the ACC Championship and the NCAA Salem Regional, as well as 29th at the NCAA Championship, all career-best finishes for those events.

FOOTBALL Three Jackets Named Preseason All-ACC by Phil Steele

PRESS RELEASE

Brooks, Stewart and Tatum recognized by long-time respected publication

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech once again landed a trio of preseason all-Atlantic Coast Conference honorees from one of college football’s premier publications, as the 2023 Phil Steele College Football Preview has tabbed defensive back LaMiles Brooks (Jacksonville, Fla./Trinity Christian Academy), place kicker Gavin Stewart (Savannah, Ga./Benedictine Military Academy) and linebacker Trenilyas Tatum (Riverdale, Ga./Mt. Zion H.S.) for the recognition. Brooks is a Phil Steele second-team preseason all-ACC honoree, Stewart received third-team recognition and Tatum is on the fourth team.

A rising junior, Brooks led Georgia Tech with three interceptions and seven pass breakups and also ranked fourth on the squad with 52 tackles in his first season as a starter in 2022. He enters the 2023 campaign as college football’s No. 5-ranked safety, according to Pro Football Focus.

Also a rising junior, Stewart was one of the nation’s most consistent kickers after taking over the Yellow Jackets’ place-kicking duties five games into last season. He made his first 12 field goal attempts of the season, becoming the first Yellow Jacket in 40 years to make even 10-straight field goals to start a season. He finished the season 12-of-13 and his .923 field goal percentage ranked 10th nationally.

Another rising junior, Tatum is expected to play a big role for the Yellow Jackets in 2023 following the graduation of a pair of all-conference honorees at linebacker in Ayinde Eley and Charlie Thomas (now members of the National Football League’s Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns, respectively). Tatum racked up 31 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble in a reserve role last season and has 43 stops in 23 career games.

With the honors from Phil Steele, a total of five Yellow Jackets have now received preseason all-ACC recognition from national publications. Last month, Brooks (second team), defensive lineman D’Quan Douse (third team) and running back Dontae Smith (fourth team) were tabbed as preseason all-conference honorees by Athlon.

HOOPS RECRUITING Couple notes...

  • I had a pretty good source tell me GT should probably be considered the leader for 4-star wing Marcus Watson. He's a really talented kid, but hasn't been playing well consistently for a while now, which is why he dropped in most recent rankings. Not a huge red flag, but there are some maturity concerns with him after an incident from this weekend at the Nike EYBL, although I do think overall he is a pretty good kid.
  • Expect a 2019 GT target to be committing elsewhere this afternoon.

Louisville -8, 52.5

I like to fade coaches that overhaul systems. There is always a lot of hype and if the personnel is even a fit, it takes about 2/3 of the season before they start to click.

Unfortunately Brian Brohm got one of his old QBs to transfer in so that will help tremendously, but hopefully not by week 1.

I’ll take the points and the under. 24-21 type game. I’d wait until gameday to bet, it will be primetime and Joe is going to be all over the preseason hyped favorite.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING OV Weekend No. 2 Buzz

Good morning. I don’t consider it hyperbole to say that this weekend’s group is the strongest from top-to-bottom that I have seen at GT since the Brian Branch/Will Anderson weekend several years ago.

Many around the recruitment of Jameson Riggs believe GT is the team to beat heading into the weekend.

I’ll update as needed.
