Salute to Birr

With all the reflections on the big win at Wake it's easy to overlook the importance of PK Aidan Birr's contributions to the victory. Though 2 of his three field goals were what matters call "chip shots" there's been no sure thing with the Tech kicking game the past few years. While Stewart was consistent at the end of last season the 40+ yard kicks didn't happen. To see Birr drill tha 48 yarder with plenty to spare was big kick and hopefully a good sign for what's ahead.

Are the Jackets back? No. Not yet anyway, but the win at Wake Forest once again showed that Georgia Tech under Brent Key will be a tough team to play for four quarters, whether they are having a good day (Wake) or a bad one (Ole Miss). The offense other than a third-quarter swoon moved the ball well in damp conditions and Haynes King continues to play very solid football and really some of the best passing quarterback play since George Godsey played over twenty years ago.

Defensively, they got after Wake and the defensive line squeezed that slow mesh and got in the face of Mitch Griffis all day leading to a bunch of miscues and some great opportunities for the Jackets. The secondary played better and made plays late to put the game away. It does look like they are starting to figure out the linebacker rotation a little bit though Tren Tatum still is struggling and they need him to be more productive overall. I thought moving Makius Scott out to play some end was a smart decision as they used his size and playing with three bigger defensive linemen to squeeze Wake's pocket and tighten the run lanes. The Deacs have three talented receivers and that showed, but Tech's defense between sacks, pressures and getting hands-on balls to bat or deflect them worked extremely well.

On the special teams side, David Shanahan punted well coming off his injury at Ole Miss and kicker Aidan Birr looked very comfortable in less-than-ideal situations kicking including hitting the longest field goal in five years from 48 yards out. Christian Leary still makes some questionable decisions on the kickoffs but they can still work on that IMO.

Overall I thought GT was the more talented team and the better team and they won the game and it should've been 38-16 instead of 30-16 had they punched in touchdowns instead of a pair of field goals.

Things shift this week as they play the final buy game on the schedule against Bowling Green who has been held in check the last two weeks to just 13 points total against Michigan and Ohio. Both of those teams are probably favored to win their conferences but this should be the type of game that GT wins comfortably and not a repeat of some of the disasters under GC3 against non-P5 teams.

That would put Tech at 3-2 on the year and primed for a bowl game with some solid play in the final 7 regular season games beginning with the trip to face a ranked Miami team that is off this week.

One unique thing about this run of games is Tech has played in four different venues in the first four games for the first time since 1997.

GT opened at the Benz
Home for SC State
At Ole Miss
At Wake Forest

In 1997, GT opened with this slate
At #11 Notre Dame (lost)
At Wake Forest (won)
Beat #17 Clemson at home
At Boston College (won)

That team went 7-5 and that would be probably my best-case scenario for the Jackets right now as well and would be a great season in year one of the rebuild under Brent Key.

The other thing that stands out to me is Tech made enough mistakes in the Wake Forest game that no one on the team will be able to crow or act like big shots going into the Bowling Green game. They left some major plays on the field on Saturday and the penalties were killers even if some were iffy 50/50 calls or in one or two cases just bad calls.

GT is right where I expected them to be coming out of the first four games of the season and that Wake Forest team while not the one from the last few years, is probably a bowl team and that is a good win for the Jackets on the road.

Hopefully Key and his staff and players can keep the pedal down this week before heading into the full heart of ACC play.

FOOTBALL GT starting to make some bowl projections again

Mark Schlabach at ESPN has GT in the Fenway Bowl playing future ACC foe SMU on December 28 in Boston obviously.

CBS's Jerry Palm a known Tech bowl skeptic for many years has GT playing the Gasparilla Bowl against South Alabama on December 22 in Tampa.

Athlon has GT playing Navy in the Fenway Bowl in the CPJ Bowl. Given how the D played against SC State, I'd prefer to not see GT play an option team again.

CFB News has GT playing Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl on December 28th in Yankee Stadium.

Finally, let’s NOT push-pin it until next season or so, when it’s clear this thread will always rise above anything related to Georgia Tech sports. ALL TECH FANS should have a place to discuss Oregon Duck Football, and this is it!

FOOTBALL Interesting note from the PFF data

I just started to look at this and it was the highest PFF overall score for a GT game against a P5 opponent since the 2018 season against UNC 78.5. That season also GT posted an 86.7 overall score against Louisville in that 66-31 beating up there and ironically an 88.9 against Bowling Green here in Atlanta in a 63-17 win. GT also had a 79.7 against VaTech on the road as well in an upset win in Blacksburg in 2018.

GT had a 78.7 last night per PFF overall score.

GTVB: Collier Claims 100th ACC win over NC State

Coach Michelle Collier tied the program's conference-win record in Tech’s ACC home opener

Box Score | Season Stats

THE FLATS
— No. 13 Georgia Tech volleyball downed NC State, 3-1, as coach Michelle Collier earned her 100th ACC win on The Flats on Sunday afternoon in O’Keefe Gymnasium. Michelle Collier tied former skipper Shelton Collier for the program record in conference victories as the Yellow Jackets (11-1, 2-0 ACC) fended off the Wolfpack (11-2, 1-1 ACC) for a 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21) triumph.

In a match that was largely nip and tuck, the White and Gold were more efficient with a higher hitting percentage (.275-.224) and less offensive errors (23-35) while riding their defense to victory with advantages in blocks (9-5) and digs (58-52).

Senior outside hitter Tamara Otene finished her explosive week with her seventh double double of the year by way of a team-leading 16 kills, 13 digs, a pair of blocks, an ace and an assist. Two other Yellow Jackets posted double-digit kills in freshman right side hitter Larissa Mendes (11) and sophomore middle blocker Liv Mogridge(10), who swung at a blistering .692 clip and also added four blocks.

Junior outside hitter Bianca Bertolino was steady as per usual with nine kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Junior middle blocker DeAndra Pierce led the defense with five blocks, and senior libero Paola Pimentel led the unit with 16 digs. The offense was primarily run by senior setter Bella D’Amico, who tallied 34 assists.

How it Happened

Tech created initial separation in the first set with a four-point run to move in front, 10-7. The Jackets extended the lead to 14-9 with a quick burst of three and would do the same after the Wolfpack drew within one, pushing up to a 19-15 advantage. Although NC State remained in striking distance and trimmed the lead to one yet again, an Otene kill granted the White and Gold match point in set one as they staved off the Wolfpack, 25-23.

The Yellow Jackets got off to another solid start in the second set as they raced out to a 9-3 lead, thanks in large part to another four-point stretch. NC State continued to nip at Tech’s heels, drawing within one twice more to trail 15-14 and later 21-20, but the home squad would separate again and again with three-point streaks for 21-16 and 24-20 advantages to set up a 25-21 set two victory clinched by a Mendes kill.

The third set was tight throughout as neither side could separate by more than three. As the two sides traded a pair of three-point blows, the match continued to go back and forth up to a 20 all draw. The Jackets would take a final lead at 22-21, but NC State managed to close set three and escape with a 25-23 win.

Georgia Tech took an 8-5 lead in the early stages of the fourth set and never looked back, using a four-point rally to gain control. The Wolfpack would tie the match at 14 apiece, but three ensuing points gave the Jackets a lead they would never surrender. Another three straight soon after would bolster the advantage to 21-16, and the White and Gold would later claim the final two points by way of Bertolino and Mendes kills, securing a 25-21 set four victory and 3-1 match triumph.

Up Next

Georgia Tech will begin a four-match road swing, opening at Virginia Tech on Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. in Blacksburg, Va. before wrapping up the weekend at Wake Forest on Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Defensive strategy change ftw

Looked to me that our coaching staff put into action a very different game plan on D. We attacked the LOS relentlessly, often with 5 or 6, and played an intentionally soft coverage designed to keep all throws in front of us. The result was a shit ton of first downs (29) for wake, but more than enough havoc created to keep them off the scoreboard. This aggression is what I wanted to see and it could be the makings of an actual identity for this defensive unit.
