GTVB: Georgia Tech Ranked No. 8 in AVCA Poll

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech volleyball (21-3, 12-2 ACC) has been ranked No. 8 in the Week 11 AVCA/Taraflex Division I Women’s Volleyball Poll, the organization announced on Monday. This is the highest ranking of the season for the Jackets, following the highest ranked home victory in program history, over then-No. 3 Louisville, on Friday. The No. X ranking is the highest since non-conference play last season (Sept. 12), when the Jackets were ranked No. 7.

The Jackets receive the No. 8 ranking after defeating then-No. 3 Louisville and Notre Dame over the weekend. The Louisville win marked the second Top 10 victory of the season, the first time in program history the White and Gold have secured multiple Top 10 wins in the same season (No. 8 Penn State – August 26). Tech swept Notre Dame on Sunday thanks to its best defensive effort of the season, holding the Irish to just .020 hitting, the lowest of the season.

This most recent poll marks Georgia Tech’s 66th straight appearance in the AVCA Top 25 and the 33rd Top 10 ranking in program history. This is the latest in a list of accomplishments for Coach Michelle Collier, the 2nd winningest coach in program history (193). The Jackets now own six all-time wins over Top 10 opponents, with four coming in the last three seasons (at No. 2 Pitt, 2021 | vs. No. 10 BYU, 2022 | vs. No. 8 Penn State, 2023 | vs. No. 3 Louisville, 2023).

The Yellow Jackets have proven to be one of the best teams in the ACC this season, leading the conference in both digs/set (15.41) and kills/set (13.80). Tech’s 15.41 digs/set is the second highest among Power 5 defenses. That defensive success is spearheaded by the play of senior Paola Pimentel. The two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Week is currently second in the conference, averaging 4.38 dig/set. The Rio de Janeiro native leads the team with 399 digs this season and is on pace to become the first Jacket to achieve 400 digs in a single season since 2019 (Maddie Tippett). She would be just the sixth Jacket in the modern scoring era (since 2008) to reach the milestone. Additionally, senior outside hitter Tamara Otene has recorded 280 digs this season, tied for the third most by a Power 5 hitter and the most among pins in the ACC.

On the offensive side of the ball, Tech leads the conference with 13.8 kills per set this season, spreading the ball around for one of the most balanced attacks in the country. Otene leads the offense by averaging 3.62 kills/set, the fourth highest in the ACC, alongside junior outside hitter Bianca Bertolino (3.09 kills/set) and freshman opposite Larissa Mendes (2.98 kills/set). All three players are in the Top 300 for kills/set across Division I, making Tech one of three Power 5 programs with three players averaging 2.97 kills/set (Top 300 cutoff) or better this season – along with Miami and Stanford.

Bertolino is coming off an historic performance against Louisville. The Argentinian delivered a career-best seven aces in the win, the most aces in an ACC match since 2017. She is tied for the sixth most aces in a single match in program history and the second-most all-time by a Jacket in an ACC match. She is averaging .62 aces/set this season, tied for the most in Division I. She is closing in on Julia Bergmann’s modern scoring era (since 2008) ace record of 64, set back in 2019.

UP NEXT
Georgia Tech will aim for its third Top 10 victory of the season this weekend when the Jackets host No. 7 Pittsburgh (21-4, 12-2 ACC) on Friday at 5 p.m. inside O’Keefe Gymnasium. The match will be broadcast on ACC Network.

GTVB: Soares Named ACC Freshman of the Week

THE FLATS – Freshman setter Heloise Soares has been recognized by the Atlantic Coast Conference as the freshman of the week, the league office announced Monday. Soares was a key player in Georgia Tech’s victory over then-No. 3 Louisville on Friday night, the highest-ranked home win in program history.

This is the second ACC Freshman of the Week honor for Soares, joining fellow freshman opposite Larissa Mendes, Olivia Babcock (Pitt) and Torrey Stafford (Pitt) as repeat winners this season. Georgia Tech and Pitt are the only teams in the conference to have multiple freshmen receive the award.

The recognitions come after the newly ranked No. 8 Yellow Jackets defeated then-No. 3 Louisville and Notre Dame over the weekend. The Louisville win marked the second Top 10 victory of the season, the first time in program history the White and Gold have secured multiple Top 10 wins in the same season (No. 8 Penn State - August 26). Tech swept Notre Dame on Sunday thanks to its best defensive effort of the season, holding the Irish to just .020 hitting, the lowest of the season.

Freshman of the Week: Heloise Soares

Soares teamed up with senior setter Bella D’Amico to lead the Georgia Tech offense in the 6-2 system. Soares posted 38 assists (5.43/set) across both contests, adding in 10 digs (1.43/set). She served all throughout Tech’s 8-0 scoring run in the final set against Notre Dame. Although she didn’t record an ace all weekend, her serving was a vital part in allowing Georgia Tech to go on sustained scoring runs against both the Irish and Louisville.

Soares was excellent at setting the middle blocker position throughout the weekend, but especially against Louisville. The Tech middle blocker tandem of DeAndra Pierce and Anna Boezi combined for 17 kills on a remarkably efficient .419 hitting in the win over Louisville, the most kills from the middle blocker position in a match this season.

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech opens a new chapter in its men’s basketball history at 7:30 p.m. Monday night when first-year head coach Damon Stoudamire and the Yellow Jackets play host to in-state foe Georgia Southern to open the 2023-24 season at McCamish Pavilion.

Tech enters this new chapter with four starters returning from a team that went 15-18 a year ago, and nine new scholarship players on its roster. The Jackets prepped for this opener with a closed scrimmage against UAB on Oct. 22 and a 91-75 exhibition victory over Clark Atlanta Wednesday night.

The Eagles, 17-16 a year ago, also enter a new chapter in their program under first-year head coach Charlie Henry. Georgia Southern returns six letterwinners from last year’s squad, including two starters.

Monday’s game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra and ESPN+, and is also available on the ESPN app. Radio coverage is on the Georgia Tech Sports Network by Legends Sports and flagship station 680 the Fan (680 AM/93.7 FM). The Tech broadcast is also available in the SiriusXM app.

THE TIP-OFF

• Georgia Tech is 4-3 in its last seven season-opening games, 3-2 when those openers have been at McCamish Pavilion.

• Tech has won its last six games against teams from the state of Georgia in regular-season play, dating back to the beginning of the 2020-21 season, when the Jackets opened the season with losses to Georgia State and Mercer.

• Tech is 123-68 in 11 seasons in McCamish Pavilion.

• Tech’s four returning scholarship players - Miles Kelly, Lance Terry, Dallan “Deebo” Coleman and Kyle Sturdivant - accounted for 59.4 percent of the Yellow Jackets’ points and 56.5 percent of the minutes during the 2022-23 season. They collectively shot 35.6 percent from three-point range.

• Tech has a total of nine scholarship newcomers on its roster, five transfers who were judged the 17th best transfer class in the country by 247Sports, and four freshmen.

• Tech’s five transfers combined to average 37 points and 17.2 rebounds per game last season at their previous schools. They have combined to play in 263 games in their careers, and have made 116 starts.

Kyle Sturdivant, a transfer himself from USC prior to the 2020-21 season, is the elder statesman on the Tech roster, beginning his fourth season. He is the lone player remaining from Tech’s 2021 ACC Championship team and has played 91 games (49 starts) in a Tech uniform.

• Tech’s only starter lost from last year’s team is 6-7 center Ja’von Franklin, now playing professionally in Serbia.

• Only three current Tech players competed in the last meeting between the Jackets and Eagles in 2021. Kyle Sturdivant scored 11 points and Deebo Coleman added 3, while Miles Kelly went scoreless.

SERIES VS. GEORGIA SOUTHERN

• Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern met in men’s basketball just two years ago, when the Eagles took the Yellow Jackets to the limit in a 61-59 Tech victory on Nov. 21, 2021 at McCamish Pavilion.

• Tech has won the last four meetings in the series, and Georgia Southern’s last win occurred in 1958.

• Tech first-year assistant coach Pershin Williams was a Georgia Southern assistant coach from 2009-13, working under another former Tech assistant coach in Charlton Young, who is now at Missouri.

JACKETS AT-A-GLANCE

Looking to return Tech to national prominence, Stoudamire brings the experience of 13 years as a successful NBA player, 10 years of coaching experience on the collegiate level and four years on the NBA level. He has added a five-player transfer class that has been ranked No. 17 in the nation by 247Sports and four talented freshmen to the roster for 2023-24.

Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets is 6-6 junior guard Miles Kelly (Stone Mountain, Ga.), who led Tech in scoring (14.4 ppg) and three-point shooting (.379) and set a team record for free throw percentage (.898). Also back is 6-3 senior guard Lance Terry (College Park, Ga.), who averaged 10.1 points and connected on 38.8 percent of his three-point attempts, 6-6 junior guard Dallan “Deebo” Coleman (Memphis, Tenn.), who averaged 9.5 points and 2.9 rebounds, and 6-3 senior point guard Kyle Sturdivant (Norcross, Ga.), who is back for his fourth season on the Flats after averaging 8.6 points and leading the Jackets in assist average (3.3 per game).

The transfer class includes 6-4 sophomore guard Amaree Abram (Port Arthur, Texas) from Ole Miss, 6-7 senior forward Tyzhaun Claude (Goldsboro, N.C.) from Western Carolina, 6-11 senior center Ebenezer Dowuona (Accra, Ghana) from NC State, 6-9 sophomore forward Tafara Gapare (Wellington, New Zealand)from Massachusetts and 6-7 junior guard Kowacie Reeves, Jr. (Macon, Ga.) from Florida. All the transfers except Gapare have significant starting experience at the previous schools, and Gapare played in 30 games as a freshman.

The freshman class is led by 6-9 forward Baye Ndongo (Mboro, Senegal) and includes 6-3 point guard Naithan George (Toronto, Ontario), 6-6 forward Ibrahima Sacko (Conakry, Guinea) and 6-9 forward Ibrahim Souare (Conakry, Guinea).

OT: Southeastern Wildfires Ongoing

If you are in Georgia and smelling stale campfire it’s from multiple forest fires ongoing. Collett Ridge in NC is over 2000+ acres and 0% contained. Several fires in Georgia and a new one popped up on the Georgia SC border today west of Clemson. Here’s a tracker for all the home and property owners up north. Be safe and hope your assets turn out to be ok.

Race to the finish

Entering the last 1/4 of the season, there are some milestones and accolades to keep an eye on:

Biggest- MAKING A BOWL!!!! Playing in a bowl is something this program desperately need to build momentum.

Haynes King- 3000yds passing. Needs 670yds to become the 1st 3k yd passer since Godsey did it in 2001

- Battle for 2nd team All-ACC QB. I assume Jordan Travis has that honor bagged. 2nd team now comes down to King v Maye. Will be interesting to see the media make that vote

- Kyle Kennard- Double digit sacks. Currently sits at 6. Ironically, he probably had 2-3 sacks wiped away due to his own penalties. Getting to 10 sacks will make him the first since Attaochu in 2013

-Eric Singleton- ACC Newcomer of the Year. This is another tight race Singleton & Concepcion of NCST.

-Haynes- 1k yds rushing. Is going to be tough now with the emergence of Dontae Smith. Currently sitting at 664. Attainable with his big play ability

OL- Who from this group will earn All-ACC honors? Franklin & Fusile appear to be strong candidates. Could MacKenny sneak in with his breakout performance?

Add some milestones and individual goals i may have forgotten
