FOOTBALL My story on the GT loss at Clemson, Brent Key "there are no silver linings"

Clemson made plays and Georgia Tech didn't. It was a pretty simple game. Self-inflicted wounds like turnovers and penalties abounded for GT while the Tigers made key plays to put the Jackets away in the second half for a 42-21 win.

GTWB: Jackets Run Past Furman, 91-56

Women’s basketball led offensively by Tonie Morgan with 19 points

THE FLATS
– Three Yellow Jackets finished in double-figures as Georgia Tech women’s basketball dominated Furman in a 91-56 victory Saturday afternoon in McCamish Pavilion. For the second-straight game, the Jackets shot over 50.0 percent from the field.

Georgia Tech (2-0) took control of the game out of the gate, extending its lead to as many as 20 points in the first half and owning a 36-19 advantage at halftime. The Jackets earned their halftime lead by holding Furman (1-1) to a mere 28.1 percent (9-32) shooting clip in the opening half, and without a three-pointer, while shooting 40.0 percent (14-35) from the field.

The second half was no different for the Jackets as Tech maintained a comfortable lead, shooting 63.2 percent (24-38) from the floor. Tonie Morgan, who finished with a game-high 19 points, led Tech with 13 points in the second half, as the offense was distributed amongst nine different Jackets in the final two periods.

Morgan was just shy of a triple-double, finishing with 19 points, and game-highs of nine rebounds and seven assists. Kayla Blackshear added in 14 points, while freshman Rusne Augustinaite contributed 14 points for her second game in double-figures. In total, the Jackets dished out 22 assists and won the battle on the glass, 47-to-34, while scoring 50 points in the paint.

Furman was led offensively by Jada Session with 20 points, Sydney Ryan (12) and Kate Johnson (11).

Tech’s 91 points marked the most points scored in a game since a 92-84 overtime win against Clemson on Feb. 13, 2022. It is only the second time in the Nell Fortner era the Jackets have scored 90-plus points in a game.

The Yellow Jackets make their first road trip of the season next, visiting Rice for an 8 p.m. tilt on Thursday, Nov. 16 in Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Postgame Notes

Team Notes

· Georgia Tech fell to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Clemson moved to 6-4 overall (3-4 ACC).

· The loss snapped Georgia Tech’s school-record-tying streak of five-straight ACC road wins.

· The loss was Georgia Tech’s ninth-straight to Clemson overall and its eighth-straight loss at Clemson. The Yellow Jackets have not defeated the Tigers since 2014 and have not won at CU’s Memorial Stadium since 2008.

· Georgia Tech fell to 50-36-2 all-time against Clemson, but is 6-17 all-time at Clemson.

· Georgia Tech’s block of a Clemson field goal attempt at the end of the first half was the Yellow Jackets’ fourth blocked kick of the season. Tech came into the game tied for fourth nationally with three blocked kicks. The Jackets’ 31 blocked kicks since 2013 are the third-most in the nation.

· Clemson converted four fourth downs (on six attempts), which is tied for the second-most fourth-down conversions ever by a Georgia Tech opponent (record: 5 by Rice – Sept. 24, 1960). Clemson’s four fourth-down conversions were the most by a Tech opponent since Mississippi State converted 4-of-4 fourth-down attempts against the Yellow Jackets on Oct. 3, 2009.

· Four of Clemson’s five offensive touchdowns came on third downs.

· In all, Clemson converted 11-of-22 third- and fourth-down attempts.

Individual Notes

· r-So. RB Jamal Haynes ran for 104 yards on 15 carries (6.9 avg.). The 100-yard rushing game was his second-straight (119 vs. Virginia – last Saturday) and third of the season and his career (prev.: 113 vs. South Carolina State – Sept. 9).

· r-Sr. RB Dontae Smith’s 32-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter was the 16th touchdown of his career, but the first on a reception (previous 15 all came on rushes).

· Sr. TE Dylan Leonard’s 4-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter was the first of his career.

· r-Sr. DB Jaylon King’s interception in the third quarter was his team-best fourth of the season. His four INTs are the most by a Yellow Jacket in a season since Jamal Golden and D.J. White had four apiece in 2014.

· So. DB Rodney Shelley set a career high with eight tackles (prev.: 2 at Virginia Tech – Nov. 5, 2022).

· So. DL Eddie Kelly led Georgia Tech with nine tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. His nine tackles matched a career high (prev.: 9 vs. South Carolina State – Sept. 9).

· Fr. WR Eric Singleton Jr. completed the first pass attempt of his career, an 8-yard completion to Jr. WR Avery Boyd that resulted in a first down on a fake punt in the fourth quarter.

OT: Gluten free life

Just got diagnosed with Celiac Disease and it’s a shock. I had no symptoms and this runs in my family. My bro has it. I have min damage but still can’t eat gluten at all or I will have more damage. I don’t feel bad when I eat it which is the odd thing. I don’t get sick.

Anyone on here also on a gluten free diet?

It’s all new to me and it sucks ass! Need advice.

Random topic for a game day but trying to figure how what the hell to do.

RIP Art Eckman

I remember Art Eckman being a pro. I believe in the 80s he was tapped to replace Ciraldo after the games moved from WGST to 680. Al was a WGST employee, so there was a conflict. But there was a big outcry and they worked out a deal and Al continued on. None of that or any connection to Tech is mentioned in the AJC article.
