Couch Coach vs Clemson

Here are a few gifs i decided to breakdown to give an idea of what happened on field vs. Clemson. These are used to give others a different perspective on how to watch football. I don’t do this to disparage players or coaches, but to give insight to GT enthusiast on what I’ve learned as a player and avid football fan.

Very disappointing performance. Not only physically but some guys mentally were not ready for the task at hand. Looking at some clips had me thinking guys were buying into the hype and that they could roll their helmets out on the field get a win vs. down Clemson squad. Reality set in quick fast and in a hurry. Not going to
hold you long bc this was depressing

Great tonesetter for the game. Inside zone pressing the LOS and a burs thru hole. Nice reach block by Weston Franklin and good vision by #11 Haynes seeing the hole in the backside A-gap. The game plan should’ve consisted more of this imo

giphy.gif

Appeared pretty early on that #10 King was a bit off and he felt the presence of the Clemson defense. The motion indicates it’s man coverage and we are running double slants. I thought as soon as King feet was set, he could’ve hit the outside slant for a big gain, yet he pulls it down and takes the sack

giphy.gif

Another great run by #11 Haynes and more great blocking by Franklin and Scaglione

giphy.gif

This play represents why our defense is in the bottom in nearly every stat. Focus on the tackle.
One of the foundational of team has to be good aggressive tacklers. This head down, stopped feet and not bring your hips/legs must stop

giphy.gif

We are in Cov 4. The WLB #13 Moala is responsible for curl/FLAT. The RB immediately goes to the flat on wheel. That should trigger the Moala to cover this route and meet it at LOS or at least stop it from getting a the 1st down. This a lack of understanding the situation

@Boger2337 Zeek is still reading your comments
giphy.gif

great job Zeek taking on the double team and make himself thin to beat the double and force a sack

giphy.gif

Great leverage here by Zeek to get in the backfield for the tfl

giphy.gif

Absolutely poor effort by #7 Lane here. Always be that hammer and not the nail. The Frosh absolutely destroy Lane that the play

Same defensive call and yet the same results. There is a few things wrong here and prime example of not know the defense. 1) the Backers can shade to the right due the safety coming down as the force/contain defender 2) we have 2 pulling Ol to the right and both of our LBs go left. Because of that, the lb can’t come of the but and make the take

giphy.gif

How to blitz: Hit it from with and hope your disguise can free you up like this

giphy.gif

how not to blitz i have no clue why Effort went left when the gap is right in front of him. One mistake there cost us a TD

giphy.gif

Textbook Coverage by Terrell but you would think with the chemistry King & Singleton possess, that King would throw this as back shoulder around the 13yd line since Terrell has him stacked and over the top

OT: Fairleigh Dickinson and the impact of athletics

What a story. Thought it hit home with the mention that undergrad applications went way up along with the school’s profile and pride in the school. Something, finally, that is understood at Georgia Tech.

He is rated as the No. 2 player in South Carolina.

FOOTBALL GT Player Notes and Quotes 11/15

Here are quick quotes from today's player media avail.

MAKIUS

It’s been a good adjustment and it hasn’t been difficult coach has coached me up to play the end spot with some different techniques. Going from technique to technique has been a smooth transition.

On defending the run, using our techniques and playing with good hands and good technique as well.

On Cuse running, this is our type of game and it is a good challenge to stop the run and we want to stop the run.

On not knowing the Cuse offense this week and the variations, they want us to stop the run and command the line of scrimmage

On Horace, he is doing an amazing job and is coming up and he is showing flashes and he will be a good player.

On having a TE play QB on scout team, we have a couple of guys.

On squeezing the pocket against a running team, that is our blueprint every week we want to command dominance up front.

On bowl game, it has been one of our goals for a long time and we want it and we have to go out and practice it and get it.

On the challenges defending the run when they’ve struggled with it, we just want to create dominance throughout the whole game and play with good hands and showcase what we have.

DONTAE

On playing a night game again, everything is the standard and you have to be ready for the game and it does add on playing a night game and people who support our family that adds juice to everything. It is a big night game and we talk about a bowl game and we can get a bowl game. At home with a big crowd with money on the line essentially. We have to go out and execute.

On the bowl game being at stake, without the bowl game you have to execute and play hard, you have to do it with or without it on the line. It does put a little more to it. I think the last time was my freshman year, me and Jaylon King want to go out.

On playing his final two home games, it hasn’t sunk in and I have so much fun playing ball with my teammates and coaches, I’m doing what I love and I’m going to play these last two games and try to put myself in a position to play at the next level. This is the end of my GT story, but I still want to play football after this.

On the Cuse run d, they do a lot of different stuff up front, it is not an orthodox defense. We have played physical and with juice and we have to be disciplined with what we do. They do a lot of weird stuff and we have to be ready for it.

On balancing emotions with things on the line, kind of the same things we’ve been coached on all year and we follow the gameplan and doing what we are coached and executing. Then you can look up and we can have a bowl game.

On last week’s offense, we didn’t play to our potential this week is one of those games where we have to bring ourselves back and show people who we are. There is a lot of opportunity to show it this game and dominate on offense like we did with UNC and we can get that confidence back.

On the losing the last few years and not going bowling, it is not ideal. I got to experience it my first year in college and now I’ve stayed in longer to get one. With it being Coach Key’s first year as HC we want to get it and send our guys out like Dylan Leonard to get one and leave on a good note.

On the RBs progression outside of Haynes and Smith, they work every day and hard even when they are on scouts they are working on things and scouts and they like to learn and work. As a leader that is big, that is something they can take from what I do or others do, just work hard.

On his most vivid memory of the Detroit Bowl Game, I didn’t play and I didn’t travel that season, it was my first time on a plane. It was scary I’ve gotten used to it now. Being able to go out and walk the city and be with my boys it was for sure fun. Whatever bowl game we get we will work and also have fun.

DYLAN LEONARD

On getting the touchdown, it was an ongoing joke in the room. It didn’t come at a special time, we were getting our butt kicked at that point but it is good to check it off.

On playing at a high level and Coach Key praising him, it means a ton and we have a special relationship with. He is a guy I’d run through a wall for and I’m sure he would do it for me too. It meant everything to hear that from him.

On his blocking improvement, it started by having to block a lot and through the past offenses and I block a lot. When Wiesehan was still here he taught me and I’ve worked on.

On counting down the game, you start counting down in your head. It is sad for me, but we have an opportunity this week that we haven’t had yet here. I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t mean a lot. We need to get to six wins.

On going to a bowl game and Key finally bringing it up, I’ve thought about it from the first game and I’ve been here 5 years and it would mean a lot and rewarding. It is something I’ve been thinking about since I got here.

On it meaning more as a capper to his career, it would mean a lot for me and for my team and our fans to get it. It starts this Saturday.

On having home field advantage, UNC the last home game was the best I’ve seen Bobby Dodd since I’ve been here and the team feeds off it. I want everyone to come give us that same energy and we want to put a show on for them.

On Cuse using a TE as a QB did it spark an idea, maybe a snap or pop pass, I’m not going to get it, but maybe Buster is looking into it

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Following the Future: Playoffs now officially underway

Khamani Alexander and Jordan Boyd with the two biggest performances of the week.

Jamal Haynes appreciation thread

Wanted to post something positive after the loss this past weekend.

This kid, JAMAL HAYNES, has not received enough credit this year.

He's one of the smallest guys on the team, but you'll have a hard time finding someone tougher. At times he reminds you of Barry Sanders, but he doesn't ever go backward, just barrels ahead.

He was one of the first kids to commit in the 2021 class (2nd behind Malik). He practiced for 2 years without seeing the field. Didn't transfer out or complain when asked to change positions. Decided to bulk up, learn the playbook, and get to work. This is an incredible story for someone to make an impact at a position they haven't played.

Currently leads the team in Rushing yards, and all RBs in TDs and YPC. He also leads all RBs in receptions and receiving yards. Very Impressive and hats of to him.

A lot of other guys deserve credit as well, but a few embody the toughest that Key preaches like JAMAL HAYNES.

Kelly,
I lay awake at night with several concerns about the season. What if we win 1 or, God forbid, 2 more games this year? We would be bowl eligible and would expose our best players and coaches to a wider audience. They could then be poached! Also the expectations going into ‘24 would be too much to handle, the spot light too bright. Also, I think my wife is cheating on me. Please help.

KQ- Lol, it is a weird double-edged sword in the portal era.

Top 3 Yung Gravy songs?

1. Chicken Stock
2. Cornstarch
3. Beurre Manie

Do you think we will change defensive scheme in the off season. Will that influence who we look for when it comes to finding a new DC?

KQ- It is unlikely as 85% of college football runs a 4-2-5 variation right now. Key will interview various people including Kevin Sherrer I would imagine amusing they play decently in the final two games and he will make a decision.

I was looking at the roster a few days ago, and recognizing attrition and portal stuff will be involved, it still looks like we could be a very senior laden team next year, which could be something to look forward to. Get old, stay old?

KQ- They are set up to be pretty good next year if they can add the right pieces via the portal and some guys develop. You have a chance to have 4/5s of the OL and all of the DL and DL rotation back except for maybe Douse who I could see having to think about it from a physical standpoint. That is a good spot to be in. Linebacker pickups or development probably a combo will be big.

Do you think we have a better chance against UGA because they play a tougher opponent, Tennessee, before they play us? I’m pretty sure for several years UGA has played an FCS scool before us

KQ- With it being a night game and sandwiched by Bama and Tenn, it could be interesting. I just don't like the matchup at all for GT. They threw Ole Miss around like ragdolls on Saturday, but they've toyed with other teams this year so I'm not sure what to expect from UGA in that game.

There was an article out there recently on Haynes King working with QB Consultant Jeff Christensen, which seemed to state that every D1 QB works with a QB coach outside of their normal position coach. How close to reality is that, and does that ever cause problems for a QB, where they have so many voices telling them how to improve (QB Consultant, QB Coach, OC, and HC)?
I'm imagining the scene from Office Space where the guy has to hear it from four different bosses if he doesn't put a cover sheet on his TPS report.

KQ- Chris Weinke is not big on guys doing that but pretty much every QB in the country does it even going back to guys who played for CPJ. It is extremely common and I'd expect both Haynes and Zach Pyron to work with someone in the offseason during some downtime. It is just what QBs do. There are good ones and bad ones. I don't know enough about the industry of QB gurus to give you much on it.

A good QB coach will work within the parameters of what the college QB coach is trying to teach and won't try to change arm slots or footwork or things that will piss off an OC or a QB coach or a HC at a college.

Think of it more like working on like a post-grad degree in your downtime than another full-time job.

What annoys you more:

1) the inevitable GT breaking news when you go on vacation
2) coming back home to appliance surprises
3) endless questions on what coach needs to be fired
4) fearmongering on student athletes poaching/NIL
5) all things Ekreb

Thanks for all y'all do. Watching GT Sports without the entertainment value of JOL just isn't the same experience

KQ- I appreciate it. Tell your friends.

If I were to rank them, 2 (I'm cheap and hate spending money on stuff like that), 4, 3, 1, 5. Ekreb doesn't bother me too much. He has probably paid enough on JOL dues on various accounts to buy me a car at this point. I think I have him pegged at around 50 aliases at various times.

Basketball:
I know it’s only been 2 games but I haven’t been able to watch them yet:

Positives?
Negatives?

KQ On the plus side, I like the offense and what they are trying to do on that side of the ball especially when Kyle is running the point. He has a really nice command of the game and it is cool to see him being a point guard again.

The negative is the defense and maybe rebounding. I've been used to really tight defensive teams at GT under Josh and BG and even Hewitt. The rebounding is a little baffling because they are showing some lack of effort at times on the defensive glass. The offensive rebounding was great in the Howard game though.

Kind of a follow up from the overreaction video last night. You talk about how it's going to take years and years to repair the neglect in our program, then laugh off questions about what gives you hope for the future of the program and then crack a joke about us "really expecting to beat Clemson" I knew it would be tough, but if we played well, I think we had a shot. I don't think that's unrealistic and as you said, if we had hit on a couple of those drops, it may have been a very different game.

So the question is, where SHOULD our heads be? Just thankful that GC3 is gone and not worry about actual results for 2-3 years so we can clean out the dead weight? Is it unreasonable to expect bowl games without having to hold our breath all the way till Thanksgiving?

KQ- So the overall program thing is an overall state of things like investment in the program, getting fans back in the stadium, raising NIL cash, developing the roster through recruiting and S&C. Clemson has GT lapped 3-4x over on that stuff right now. There are people working hard behind the scenes, but there is a lot to fix and a lot of things on J Batt's agenda for example. I think I've seen major strides being made across the board and a stat like Key having almost double the body count of staff is a great example of that or the Competitive Drive fundraisers.

Here is the thing, GT was overmatched from a talent standpoint against UNC, Clemson, Miami, Ole Miss and Louisville to a lesser extent. They won a couple of those games so you should be proud and had a chance to win another one in Louisville and got within a score of Ole Miss late. They are going to have clunkers too and we've seen that. I did not think they were going to win and no one doing picks here other than Sed thought they were going to win. So losing a game you are a 14.5 dog in isn't something I'd be flipping out over and some people were acting like GT is Alabama suddenly with the snap of a finger. It is a hodgepodge roster and staff and they are keeping things together with duct tape due to the injuries at key spots. They have not had their top WR for the entire season and their top DL played 26 snaps this year before blowing out his knee. They played Saturday without the guy who is probably their top cover CB in Ahmari Harvey and the DT who has been playing the best in the last three games Horace Lockett looking like a shell of himself trying to give it a go.

It was a bad matchup against what GT does well and it showed from the jump with the two RBs and the inability to pressure Klubnik.

Why does it seem running backs and defensive backs don't have knee pads in their pants anymore?

KQ- I have no idea. That is an interesting question. I don't get why guys stopped wearing cups either.

  • Poll
OT: Falcons coach poll

Do you think Arthur Smith should be fired?

  • Yes

  • No

  • 1 more season

  • Not sure

Results are only viewable after voting.

we have reached the point where it’s likely Smith is gone soon imo.

My main issue is that the same people will make the next hires…. Blank and McKay….

The fans are demanding this now and the NFL is different than college… money isn’t an issue for this decision like it would be at GT. Fans are important more so with pro sports.

I think we should clean house and I want blank to give up control and sell and retire or run for president like all people over 80 do.
