Russell's Ramblings, pres. by MyPerfectFranchise.net: A big weekend on the Flats on the diamond, recruiting trail

This weekend is a big one for Georgia Tech’s efforts in the 2025 class.

With Spring Break looming for much of the state, several local recruits are set to visit schools they may not normally get the chance to see.

The same is taking place around the country, with Georgia Tech being a stop for several out of state recruits, such as new QB target Grady Adamson who was offered following his visit earlier this week.

For Brent Key and his staff, this means that this weekend is a chance to leave a lasting impression on several priority targets.

Among the expected group of visitors this weekend-

Four-star Sandy Creek CB Dalen Penson
Four-star Grayson DE Andre Fuller Jr
Four-star La. RB Jasper Parker
Stockbridge LB Chase Taylor
Four-star Ohio LB Grant Beerman
Coveted S.C. CB Cam Strong
Ala. DE Caleb Smith
Tenn. DT Jhrevious Hall
Newly-offered ELCA S Fenix Felton
No. 12 recruit in the 2026 class, Zelus Hicks from Carrollton (Ga.)
No. 50 overall recruit in the 2026 class, Shadarius Toodle from Cottage Hill (Ala.) Christian Academy

I’m not one to make guarantees or promises, and I’ve abandoned the FutureCast feature for this cycle, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Key closed on his first commit this weekend.

QUICK HITTERS:

The offer from GT to Alpharetta DL JQ Madison earlier this week was a big one.

“My hometown school wants me, that makes this offer way more important to me than a lot of others,” said Madison when talking to JOL. Jess Simpson gave him the offer. He plans to return again soon.

Georgia Tech is in the thick of things for Okla. QB Grady Adamson after offering earlier this week. Brent Key impressed both Adamson and his dad, and the two spent a good amount of time with him in his office prior to getting the news of the offer. A return visit could be in the works, but Adamson also has some other visits coming up.

New WR coach Trent McKnight did a great job earlier this week with Langston Hughes trackstar and WR Maurice Gleaton. When GT lost Crawford, Gleaton wasn’t sure where he stood on the board for the hometown Jackets, but he got the clarity he was hoping for and thoroughly enjoyed his time both with McKnight and at GT.

“I like the new WR coach, he’s a pretty cool guy, and is straight forward. The visit was a great experience.”

The combination of McKnight and close friend Eric Singleton are key factors here.

BC SERIES PREVIEW:

On paper, this BC team is one that Danny Hall’s bunch should not have much trouble with.

They don’t hit a lot of home runs, they don’t score an extraordinary amount of runs, and they strikeout a ton.

They’ve got three batters with an OPS over 1.000-

Nick Wang (.315/.394/.674) 27 RBI

Kyle Wolff (.348/.455/.629) 27 RBI

Cameron Leary (.338/.509/.713) 25 RBI, 8 HR

Leary seems to be the x-factor among the trio, leading the team in OBP and slugging. He is also the only regular for the Eagles that has more walks (27) than strikeouts (24)

Thursday’s starter for BC, Michael Farinelli, enters the weekend with a not-so-pretty 6.75 ERA, but the issue with Farinelli is more about his command than it is control. He’s missing his spots, and teams have made him pay for it.

He could only get one out in a start earlier this month against NC State, allowing 7 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits without a single strikeout.

His best starts of the season have been against Cal (4 IP, 0 ER with 7 K) and W&M (3 IP, 0 ER with 5 K)

If GT can get to him early, which I project they will, the Eagles are going to have a tough time finding their footing in Atlanta.

If they are passive at the plate like they were last weekend in Chapel Hill, the Eagles might steal one, or two, and could head out of Atlanta on Saturday with a series win.

HOOPS Baye Ndongo Finalist for Kyle Macy Award

Tech freshman forward one of 30 named finalists for nation’s top freshman in Division I

Kyle Macy Award Finalists

Boston, Mass. – Georgia Tech forward Baye Ndongo is among 30 college freshmen named Wednesday as finalists for the Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year Award. The award is presented annually to the top freshman in Division I by CollegeInsider.com.

The 6-9 freshman missed Tech’s first three games with a hand injury, but started every game thereafter either in the post or at the power forward spot, and earned a spot on the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Rookie team. The Mboro, Senegal native, who prepped at Putnam (Conn.) Science Academy, was one of only two freshmen in Division I to average 12.4 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game while hitting at least 55 percent of his shots from the floor. Only Chris Bosh(2003) and Derrick Favors (2010) achieved all those numbers as freshmen.

Against ACC competition, Ndongo averaged 12.6 points and 7.7 rebounds while hitting 55.4 percent of his shots from the floor and leading the team in blocked shots with 20.

Ndongo led the Jackets in scoring 10 times and in rebounding 18 times, while posting six double-doubles. He was named the ACC’s Rookie of the Week three times early in the season, once after scoring 21 points to lead Tech past No. 7 Duke in December, again after scoring 12 points with 19 rebounds in a Dec. 16 win over Penn State at Madison Square Garden, and the third time after making the all-tournament team at the Diamond Head Classic.

Ndongo was the first Tech freshman since Josh Okogie to be voted to the All-Rookie team.

Tech posted a 14-18 overall record, 7-13 in the ACC, in its first season under head coach Damon Stoudamire.

The Kyle Macy Award is named for a guard who starred as a freshman for Purdue. The 1975 Indiana Mr. Basketball, Kyle Macy played his freshman season at Purdue University, averaging 13.8 points per game while leading the Boilermakers in free throws (85.9 percent for the season). He started in 25 of 27 games, helping them to a 16-11 season record.

After one season in West Lafayette, Ind., Macy transferred to the University of Kentucky in 1976. He started every game for the Wildcats in 1977. A three-time All-America and three-time All-SEC player, Macy was a member of Kentucky's 1978 National Championship team. In his senior year of 1979-80, he became the first Kentucky player ever to be named consensus Southeastern Conference Player of the Year.

FOOTBALL Georgia Tech football practice notes and quotes 3/27

Another busy day on the Flats and we spoke to quarterbacks coach/co-offensive/assistant head coach Chris Weinke after practice along with his two veteran quarterbacks Haynes King and Zach Pyron.

This is the first time in several years GT had QB1 and QB2 back in the same offense with the same offensive coordinator and position coach going into spring ball.

Weinke said having that consistency and having two freshmen to add into the mix with walk-on Brody Rhodes has been a lot of fun for him as a coach. he said that there are certain things he looks for with QBs and the room is full of that, toughness and leadership qualities. He likes the way they are laddered out (class separation) and each of the QBs brings a little something different to the table. He said it is also fun because he can't coach each QB the same way so it makes his job exciting.

With King, Weinke said that,

"Regardless of how old you are, whether you're a young guy or you've got experience, I think you always continue to learn you always continue to develop. The challenge I have for my guys every single day is find something to get better at just a little bit each day. And I think over the collective period of time, whether it's it's spring ball, it's the summer leading into camp I think if those guys can just focus on those little things. Obviously, the body of work will be will be special when it's all said and done. More specifically with Hanes obviously had a really good year for us. But he's a perfectionist. And I think when you look at and you go back and you watch every snap from last year, his ability to make big plays not only with his legs, but in the passing game. Obviously, the elephant in the room is the turnovers, right? And we have to clean that up. We cannot provide extra opportunities for the opponent, he knows that he understands it. So you look at every single turnover and why did it happen? And you try to eliminate those things, or the reason that that had happened and I think he's conscious of that. What I don't want to do is take away his aggressiveness. And he understands and knows that. I want to play at full speed, trust in his eyes, and sometimes those things happen, and I think he understands it, but his development in terms of operating our offense, high football IQ really a joy to work with and he speaks the language at a high level understands it. And I only think he's gotten better since last year. I think you look at his release. It's quicker than it was a year ago. It's been something he's been conscious of but his leadership qualities and what he's what he's done for this football team is special."

Weinke said it has been good to get Graham Knowles and Aaron Philo in early especially because they run a pro-style offense and there is a lot of verbiage with it as they try to create mismatches on offense. They are like any young QB learning and absorbing information and he knows what it is like to be in their shoes and he is trying to help them with that process so they can understand what they are doing and then their bodies slow down and that is what they are working on now. Great additions to the QB room and they are wired the right way and want to be great and want to be coached. The bonus is they have two older guys in that room in Haynes and Zach that they can observe every day.

Weinke said it is an honor to be named assistant head coach and his goal is to take some things off Brent Key's plate. It wasn't something he asked for, but he is honored to help. He said that Key gets pulled in a lot of different directions and his job is to ease some of his stress and anxiety by handling some things for him and also to help be a GPS system for Key and help guide him in the right direction with some things.

Weinke said that when Coach Key took over for Geoff Collins the whole program changed and everything in the building changed and he preached toughness every day and that is something at every position that is preached and they look for a full buy-in from every player. He said they are now at the point when you walk into the locker room you can feel that buy-in and sense that something special is happening. He said that doesn't happen everywhere regardless of the level and he thinks that is something Key should get credit for creating here, they've brought the right kids into the program and they support each other, but the ultimate goal is to win a championship and that is the mindset every day and the kids believe it and live it every day. He said that may sound like a cliche but they are building a great culture and that means everyone in the building is collectively pulling the rope together in the same direction and that is really important.

Weinke said that it is fun this spring because they have almost every starter and key back on offense except a handful of guys and there is substitute for experience and the core of the offense is back and now they can expand on scheme whereas last year it was a new staff and new philosophy now you don't have to teach the kids as much and they can just play fast and that allows Buster Faulkner and the offensive staff to be more creative and add to, "one of the most exciting offenses in the country."

HAYNES KING

King said this is year two here and he is stepping up into more of a leadership role and trying to be more vocal especially with a lot of new faces this spring. He said it has been exciting seeing the new defensive staff and new teammates as well.

King said his role with the young QBs is to show him how to do things and set the standard and live up to that standard and show the players how they do things not just in practice or meetings, but outside of the facility.

King said the WRs is fun and there is a lot of camaraderie between the WRs. He said the little guys Malik Rutherford and Christian Leary are always going at it and that is funny as they compete.

King said the scrimmage on Saturday should be a good barometer of where things stand and how they look against a new defense with a new defensive scheme and staff.

King said that the team is full of competitors and the QBs are no different and they are working to see who can squad or bench the most, but they are all family and if anyone needs anything they can just ask.

King really enjoys working with Coach Weinke every day, he has done it on every level and coached it on every level and he provides knowledge every day whether it is competing and carrying out your fake or just about being a man outside of the QB room. He is always checking on them and has a personal relationship with each of them.

I asked King about turnovers and avoiding losing his aggressiveness but being smarter about dangerous throws, he said that he still needs to be aggressive but he needs to be more intelligent when he takes those shots. How are you taking the shot? He said that Weinke does a great job of breaking that down and he said that consistency in your daily life even down to how you wake up and start your day carries over into sports and school and then everything will fall into place.

Pyron was up last and I asked him about finally having the same offense for back-to-back seasons for the first time since almost middle school. He changed offenses several times in HS and then twice in college already. He said that Weinke told him a story about Brett Favre and how he ran the same offense the whole time in the NFL and it allowed him to break everything down to the smallest detail and he would repeat that process every year even though he knew it already and he said that is how they do things at GT. Both Zach and Haynes know the offense, but they act like they don't know it all and relearn it each camp and that has allowed Zach to elevate his game because he has a deeper understanding of the calls and why they make them. A year ago he wouldn't have understood that part but now he does.

On his own game, he is trying to also elevate his football IQ more along with being more accurate. He said that accuracy is one of the most important elements for a QB and that starts with his feet and he has been working hard on his feet this spring.

Pyron said that King has been great to learn things from and they are super competitive every day and he likes seeing how King handles everything and what he learned from his dad who is a legendary head coach in Texas and how he has this high football IQ, all that is off the charts with King and seeing how King breaks down film and they have a close relationship and joke and have funny text chains with the QBs and stuff.

He was asked weirdly about running packages and if that is something they work on now (it isn't at all) Pyron said they are not working on subpackages or anything like that right now, because that is more of a game plan thing week to week. He wants to be on the field because of his competitive nature and hopes that is something they do more of this season, but they are in base installation right now just two weeks into spring and that is something they work on going into the season not in the spring.

Pyron said the two young QBs are like sponges right now learning from both King and himself as well as Rhodes and they are wanting to learn and grow and they don't miss stuff, they want to be great. He said it makes him feel good about the future of Georgia Tech football when he is gone seeing that the program will be in good hands down the line with Knowles and Philo when it is their turn.

Pyron said he worked really hard to improve his arm strength and speed up his release and those are always things that can be refined and improved upon.

FOOTBALL Something to keep an eye on..

Was going to include this in my Ramblings column, but feel like it warrants its own thread.

Former Middle Tennessee State defender Richard Kinley had transferred to Memphis back in December.

A lot of changes would take place in the following weeks and months, and part of that led to a scheme change.

Kinley has opted to re-enter the portal, and is hopeful that the coach he committed to in the first place, Kyle Pope, will make the call and try to bring him to Atlanta.

Had 20 tackles, 6.5 TFL, and 3 sacks last season to go along with 3 PBU and 1 FR which he returned for a TD.

BASEBALL Five Jackets Make 2024 Opening Day Rosters

2024 MLB season begins today for #ProJackets

Full List of Professional Yellow Jackets

THE FLATS –
Georgia Tech baseball will be well-represented on Thursday as it features four #ProJackets on Opening Day to start the 2024 Major League Baseball regular season.

Representing the White and Gold to start the year will be:

  • Joey Bart (San Francisco Giants)
  • Charlie Blackmon (Colorado Rockies)
  • Xzavion Curry (Cleveland Guardians)
  • Buck Farmer (Cincinnati Reds)

Bart appeared in 30 games last year for San Francisco as he continued to work on his game at the plate, hitting just .207 in 87 at-bats.

But the 27-year-old catcher was sensational during Spring Training, hitting .414 with an OPS of .974 in 29 at-bats as he looks to carry momentum into the 2024 season.

Colorado veteran Blackmon is beginning his 14th season and is looking to get back himself and the team back to winning ways after several tough-luck injuries last season.

For his career, Blackmon is hitting .296 with 215 home runs and an .840 OPS. During Spring Training, "Chuck Nazty" hit a blistering .383 with two home runs.

Starting his second full-fledged season in the Major Leagues, Curry is looking to capitalize on a stellar 2023 season where he made 41 appearances for a 4.07 ERA, filling a variety of roles well for Cleveland.

Curry could be the next man up to enter the starting rotation, but after he was the latest Guardian to catch an illness, he may not be ready to start right away as he ramps back up.

Farmer returns to the Reds' bullpen on a one-year, $2.25 million deal after being one of Cincinnati's most durable relievers in 2023. In 71 appearances last season, Farmer posted a 4-5 record with a 4.20 ERA and three saves.

He tied for fifth in the National League in appearances in his 10th season in the Major Leagues.

AWAITING THE CALL

A number of #ProJackets will be looking to make their Major League debut in 2024, in addition to Amos Willingham, who will look to return after 18 outings for the Nationals during the 2023 season.

Yellow Jackets starting the 2024 season in Triple-A:

  • Tristin English - Reno (Diamondbacks)
  • Brant Hurter - Toledo (Tigers)
  • Justyn-Henry Malloy - Toledo (Tigers)
  • Kyle McCann - Las Vegas (Athletics)
  • Chandler Simpson - Durham (Tampa Bay)
  • Connor Thomas - Memphis (Cardinals)
  • Amos Willingham - Rochester (Nationals)

Running behind this week thanks to being at GT from 9am until like 6:30 pm yesterday.

Seems unusual - so any idea why GT currently has 8 QBs on the roster. Understand that are not all on scholarship but how could they actually use that many.

KQ- There are only six actually working with the QBs in practice sometimes seven. Others are at different positions for spring ball. I think Aidan Semo is working with the TEs now as an example. That is pretty normal, guys move around and get placed where they fit in for depth.

Does James Forrest son still plan to play hoops at Ga Tech next season ?

KQ- I don't think so. I'll check on that though. He wasn't exactly lighting up the scoreboard at the JUCO he is at.

What defensive unit do you think will be much improved this fall?

KQ- I think the LBs we will be much better. I think Santucci is a really strong coach and teacher and is very demanding of that group.

Assuming the two power brokers go to mega conferences of 24+ teams, by the time the dominoes fall, do you think getting into Atlanta (or even having an entire Southern pod of teams FSU, Miami, GT, etc) would be of enough value for the BigTen to make the move to re-invite GT? Or is the bigger issue how nationally relevant football and basketball are at the time it happens?

KQ- I've been pretty clear on where I stand on this. I think the SEC will move to protect their turf if they can in that scenario and keep the Big Ten out of the South and GT will have options. I think the Big Ten would love a foothold into the South and GT, Miami, UNC and UVA would give that to them. I think that is the pod. I think the SEC may try to keep Clemson, FSU, GT and maybe Miami out of the Big Ten. I am not really sure what UNC is going to do. That is the biggest question in that scenario. I think culturally GT, Miami, UNC and UVA fit in the Big Ten more than the SEC.

If on Monday Davis does commit to FSU, will Pippen feel no pressure to commit anytime soon and prolong his uncommitted status, adding more and more OVs?

If Pippen will not commit soon does Stoudamire resume searching for a talented PG or ComboG?

KQ- Pippen is nice to have, but Stoudamire is going to add the pieces he thinks will give him the most competitive product on the court next fall and that could mean adding a portal guard. Everything also hinges on who leaves and who stays. We won't know that for several weeks IMO. There is no rush for guys going into the portal.

With all the new titles for the assistant coaches, who would be the acting head coach if Brent key had to miss a day for something?

KQ- So in your scenario, Brent Key has to get his appendix out or something and has to miss a day of practice. My thought is Chris Weinke would lead the offensive side of the ball and Ricky Brumfield would lead the defensive side of the ball and special teams. If it were a game, that is a different question, might be Weinke or might be Donald Hill-Eley who is Key's right-hand guy and a former college head coach.

Assuming no one finds a way out of the GOR and ESPN doesn’t opt out- by the time this contract runs it’s course, Will GT and others be left on the outside looking in as far as the College Athletics picture? Meaning by the time this crazy deal is done will all the shifting of teams be done and our teams really have nowhere to go.

KQ- Not at all, everyone assumes whatever moves happen are permanent and the landscape of college sports forever and that is far from the case. I think if they go small and try to make it pro spots it will implode in a big bad day and there will be a massive reset. I still have a weird feeling we are going to see a massive shift in money and everything else as the reality starts to set in for the Texas/Oklahoma/USC/UCLA's of the world when they start becoming middle-of-the-pack teams and also for some of the elite of the SEC and Big Ten who may get knocked down a peg playing harder schedules. I think congress is going to get sucked into this as well.

Would getting arrested void an NIL deal?

KQ- Depends on the contract and the language in it. None of us have access to that stuff. Those are private contracts with entities that operate outside of the schools and athletic associations.

Do you think this upcoming football season is very important for GT in terms of the potential (and likely) conference realignment? Or do you think it’s going to be strictly about money and brand? Because we may be too far gone in later case.. don’t know if one good season can save us if the ACC does implode.

KQ- I think you are focused on the wrong things in realignment if you think it GT suddenly making the playoffs or winning the ACC changes how they are viewed by the SEC or the Big Ten. That works if you are trying to join the Big 12 or something and you are UCF and you were able to become somewhat nationally relevant and they desperately needed teams not knowing the Pac-12 was going to implode 24 months later.

It is about brand, location, market and intangibles. USC is a national brand so they had value to the Big Ten, they had to add three other teams to make the logistics make sense and in UCLA's case the legalities made sense so eventually UCLA, Washington and Oregon joined as wlel. If the Big Ten wants to add southern teams then I think GT is in the mix there regardless of how football is performing. Hoops, don't move the meter in this scenario at all.

The other domino is what the SEC wants to do, because they have to expand a lot to catch up with the Big Ten.

This is my gut feeling on all of this.

The Big Ten jumps to 24 from 18 adding a Southern pod and ND stays independent. If that scenario the Big Ten needs six teams what makes sense is for them to add UNC, Miami, GT, UVA, Kansas and one other team and maybe ND takes the plunge or they add Duke.

I think the SEC would go to 24 as well and add Clemson, FSU, NC State, VT, WV, Ok State, Pitt and maybe Duke/Louisville/Wake (they will want some dogs to beat up on in football).

That's the 48-team scenario.

If you look at the back end of what the SEC would be stuck with, you come to the same realization that I have that the SEC will try like hell to proactively get UNC, Miami, GT and UVA along with Clemson and FSU and probably NC State so they aren't left with the crumbs of the ACC. That would allow the Big Ten to expand more with the Colorado, Kansas, Iowa State, Arizona, ASU types. That makes more sense to me for the long term health of CFB.

Not sure if it’s been long enough now, but do we have numbers of players we’ve gotten to transfer to Tech that we “missed” signing as high school recruits? Curious how effective we are being in building those kind of relationships to get second opportunities with kids.

KQ- It has been more of a thing in hoops so far than football in the last few cycles. It is harder with both because of the coaching changes to really point out. In football, Makius Scott and EJ Lightsey are the only ones. It will probably be a bigger deal as Key gets more established as a head coach. Most of the prior relationship guys that Collins brought in where hit-and-miss like Kenyatta Watson II (miss), Antonneous Clayton (whiff), KJ Wallace (hit) or Myles Sims (hit). Obviously they've had some success with former UGA guys that Buster Faulkner knew at UGA, but that is a little different too from what you are asking.

Is CBK concerned at having no commits at this stage of the spring? I ask about him to separate that from the fans on here who mention their "concern."

KQ- No, he could have multiple commits right now if he wanted to settle, but they are trying to focus on landing their top targets right now and you also just had half the coaching staff turnover so they are reevaluating things and the entire recruiting staff just about turned over too. They are doing some resets on some targets.

What are the football players required to do during the summer? Remain on campus? Take classes? Daily workouts? Do they have flexibility until preseason camp starts?

KQ- Some have internships, but the ones who don't take summer classes and there are summer workouts and summer walk-throughs (think football practice without a ball with the coaches) and then they have a good bit of time off in July before fall camp starts. That is when coaches go on vacation.

We all know McCamish’s nickname is the tit. If we sign Pippen and his mom attends games will we all have to use the nickname in plural form?

KQ-
1711477664260.png

Any word on CDS staff changes?

No, it is very early for that type of stuff. That happens during the Final Four or shortly after.

Also curious if we will see more zone next season as it seemed to help us late this year.

KQ- I think that was an unfortunate lesson that Stoudamire had to learn the hard way early in the season. He wanted to play NBA man-to-man ball and he didn't put in the zone until he saw how much they struggled playing man-to-man for 40 minutes a night. I expect that is something he will focus on a lot in the offseason. It was weird seeing GT be so bad at times defensively after that being the only calling card for many years under BG and Josh.

OT: Coworking Space Downtown?

I came down to Atlanta for a 7:30 meeting that got pushed back to 2:30, so now I have 5 hours to kill and I’d like to get some work done.

Anyone have any suggestions on an impromptu coworking space? I came to Tech Square to park at the GT Hotel and Conf Center but there’s no dedicated working space and I just posted up at the empty hote bar.

Does Tech Square have a place where people can show up and use secure/non-public WiFi?

The GT offer is one that both Felton and Madison have been waiting on. Felton was offered as a safety while on a phone call, while Madison surprised GT by showing up for a visit on Monday, and left with an offer from Jess Simpson.

Off season, spring training!

I know a lot of you all don’t respond back to me because I was really bad at handling disagreements. I promise you all I’m not like I use to be! I mean come on I’m Jon’s older brother lol!

I wanted to start this thread because I wanted some of you all thoughts! We were pretty bad on defense but scored 31 points on the season.

Let’s say if we some how jump to 60 to 80th in the nation for total defense, do any of y’all believe we could win 9 games with the same production or better on offense??? That may be a dumb questions to some in here but just wanted to see what your thoughts were. If you even respond( which is ok)

Lastly, I know our schedule is tough but at the same time I have faith in Key! I believe he will over come that toughness that he has been preaching for years.
