It is time to raid Miami.

Former Sandy Creek LB and priority GT target Marcellius Pulliam has entered the transfer portal this morning.

Was previously at Miami.
@Russell Johnson are you saying that he was any priority out of high school or a current priority?

Sticking with Miami, now that former Miami S Savion Riley is officially in the portal, consider this my JOL Projection for him to head home to Atlanta to play for Cory Peoples, Brent Key, and GT.

(OT) college choices

I’m always curious to see which colleges are the “popular” choices these days. My daughter is a freshman at Marist and we were counting (loosely) where the members of the senior class are attending school. A few surprises:

We only saw 1 person going to Clemson. That used to be a very popular choice locally.

26 uga
13 or 14 gt
17 auburn
Next highest tier was bama, fsu, Kentucky and I think ole miss. Ole miss seems to be gaining favor locally. If were a teenage boy, I don’t really blame them with that choice.

Last year the flavor of the month was the Vols.

When I was in school (large public school in metro area) the five top choices were auburn fsu Clemson uga and gt (we actually had 40+ go to tech).

What is everyone else saying and sorry to distract from the butker commencement speech!

Student-Athletes Post Highest GPA in Tech History

3.25 mean GPA for student-athletes is highest ever on The Flats

THE FLATS
– Georgia Tech student-athletes posted a 3.25 mean grade point average – the highest in Tech athletics history – to highlight an outstanding academic semester on The Flats.

The 3.25 mean GPA compiled by Tech’s 412 student-athletes for the recently completed Spring 2024 semester surpassed the 3.23 GPA that student-athletes posted during the Covid-19-interrupted Spring 2020 term. The record GPA comes on the heels of the Yellow Jackets compiling a 3.14 GPA during the Fall 2023 semester, which was the second-highest GPA on record for Tech student-athletes at the time.

Four Tech teams set program records for their team GPA during the spring semester – football (3.02), women’s basketball (3.07), softball (3.44) and women’s cross country/track and field (3.47).

Additionally, Tech set all-time records for highest percentage of student-athletes earning a 3.0 GPA or higher (68%), highest GPA for first-year student-athletes (3.27) and highest GPA for men’s sports student-athletes (3.16). Fifty-eight percent of Tech’s student-athletes earned Dean’s List or Faculty Honors designations.

“Congratulations to our student-athletes for their record-breaking performance in the classroom this semester,” director of athletics J Batt said. “Their academic success is a great point of pride for our athletics department and the entire Tech community, so I thank them for their hard work and dedication. I also thank our coaches and our outstanding academic staff for all that they do to help our student-athletes achieve in the classroom.”

Women’s tennis, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament earlier this month, led all Georgia Tech teams with a 3.61 team GPA. Golf, which advanced to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship with a fourth-place showing in its NCAA regional tournament earlier this week, had the highest men’s GPA and second-highest overall at 3.57. Twelve of Tech’s 13 programs had a 3.0 team GPA or higher.

Making the Yellow Jackets’ academic success especially impressive is the fact that nearly 82% of Tech’s student-athletes major in business, engineering, sciences or computing.

In the latest data, Georgia Tech athletics set a new all-time record for the third-straight year by posting a 92% NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR). Prior to 2021, Georgia Tech had never achieved a GSR above 90% and prior to 2016, Tech never had a GSR above 85%. Georgia Tech’s 92% GSR is also higher than the national average of 90%, while 10 of the Yellow Jackets’ 13 teams – women’s basketball, men’s cross country/track & field, women’s cross country/track & field, football, golf, softball, men’s swimming & diving, women’s swimming & diving, men’s tennis and volleyball – have individual team GSRs that are at or above the national average in their respective sports. Leading the way are women’s basketball, golf, softball, men’s tennis and volleyball, which all have perfect 100% GSRs.

BASEBALL Burress Named Semifinalist for Dick Howser Trophy

Burress only freshman on prestigious shortlist for college baseball’s top player

DALLAS – Freshman phenom Drew Burress (Houston County, Ga./Houston County) continues to add to his campaign for nation’s top freshman, being named a semifinalist for the 2024 Dick Howser Trophy, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America announced Thursday.

Burress joins the prestigious 68-member list as its only freshman and one of 14 members from the Atlantic Coast Conference. The award is given in memory of former Florida State all-American shortstop, major leaguer and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987. The trophy is regarded as baseball’s most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration of the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage – all qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser’s life.

Burress arrived on the scene and was immediately one of the nation’s top freshman, hitting a team-best .376 with 14 doubles, two triples and 21 home runs for 59 RBI. With an OPS of 1.316, he’s slugging .812 with an on-base percentage of .504, having drawn more walks (47) than strikeouts (33). He also has seven stolen bases and has seven assists from center field.

Burress currently leads all Division I freshmen in six statistical categories (home runs, home runs per game, slugging, total bases, walks, and walks per game), while ranking Top 3 nationally in 11 categories. Then at the conference level, he leads ACC freshmen in nine categories (runs batted in per game, runs and on-base percentage) while also ranking second in RBI and batting average.

Leading Georgia Tech in average, home runs and RBI, the Houston County native has a chance at becoming the 12th Yellow Jacket to win Georgia Tech’s triple crown. Burress would be the first to accomplish the feat since Matt Gonzalez in 2016 and would join a list that includes Mark Teixeira (1999), Mark Fischer (1997), Jay Payton (1994), Jason Varitek (1992, 1993), and Andy Bruce (1991) in the annals.

Burress joins an illustrious group of Dick Howser Trophy semifinalists at Georgia Tech, including Varitek and Teixeira, who won the award in 1994 and 2000, respectively. He also joins Zane Evans and Daniel Palka (2013), Joey Bart (2018), Kyle McCann (2019) and Kevin Parada (2022).

Finalists will be announced on Thursday, June 8 with the award being presented during the College World Series on June 13.

Buress and the Yellow Jackets will travel to finish the 2024 regular season at Florida State on May 16-18 in Tallahassee. First pitch on Thursday is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.

Tech shared the regional title in 2022 in Columbus, Ohio and won the 2023 regional in Salem, S.C., by eight strokes. The Yellow Jackets are playing in an NCAA regional for the 26th straight year and for the 33rd time in the 35 years the NCAA has used a regional qualifying format for its championship.

Only Forrester has played in all 11 stroke-play events for the Yellow Jackets this year. Lamprecht missed the Calusa Cup to play in the Masters, and Tai didn’t compete in the fall opener at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. Head coach Bruce Heppler, who has coached Tech to 19 NCAA Championship appearances in his 29 years on The Flats, has started freshmen Kale Fontenot (Lafayatte, La.) andCarson Kim (Yorba Linda, Calif.) in six of the Jackets’ seven spring tournaments.
