The Volleybees head into the 2016 season with almost the entire roster returning and all starters returning. Lots of optimism and potential for this to be a super season ending in a NCAAT appearance for Coach Michelle Collier in her 3rd year.

The Volleybees have gone from 13-18/6-12 in her 1st year to 18-14/9-11 in year 2. Last year left a sour taste in the mouths of these returning players though as the VB's were sitting at 17-9/8-6 with 6 matches left. IOW, sitting right on the NCAAT fence at that time. Losses in 5 of those last 6 was a disappointing way to end the season to say the least.

The Jackets open at Auburn Friday night. The match will be streamed live at 8pmET via SEC Network Plus. If you get WatchESPN/ESPN-3, you'll get SEC Network +. The Jackets defeated Auburn a year ago at O'Keefe 3-1. Auburn finished 2015 with a respectable 18-12 overall record and 10-8 in the competitive SEC (6th place).

The VB's will face Pacific University on Saturday morning at 10:30amET (9:30am local) at Auburn. Pacific went 17-13 last year and we know the west coast teams are normally very good while playing very tough competition. 4 teams from the West Coast Conference made the NCAAT last year - same as the ACC...the difference is all 4 ACC teams went out in the first round while 2 WCC teams made the Sweet 16. This game can be followed via Gametracker.

The one team who made the NCAAT at the Auburn field this weekend is Furman, who won the SoCon a year ago. The Jackets and Paladins will face off later on Saturday at 6pmET. This game can also be followed via Gametracker. I'll try to post links to SECN+ and Gametrackers in reply as we get close to match time.

If the Volleybees can get home with 2 wins this weekend, I think that will be a good start to the season. Certainly, we will face good competition against 3 clubs who all could be in the 64-team NCAAT field come December.

One of my favorite players on the VB's roster is Ashley Askin. The Junior Outside Hitter from Louisville, Kentucky, is not only a strong player around the net, but she is a joy to watch. I don't think any S-A at Tech has more fun on the court than her. Her smile during games is infectious. Though, don't be fooled. This young lady will break your nose with a spike if you don't watch out.

Follow her this season at AshleyIsAskin... http://www.ramblinwreck.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/082416aaa.html

GO VOLLEYBEES!!

Auburn gets the first set, 25-21. Tech played about as poorly as we can after getting a 12-9 lead. Poor passing. Ugly. Hopefully, we get those kinks out in a hurry.

Jackets get the 3rd set, 25-18, to take a 2-1 lead. Just one more, Tech!!!

And the Volleybees take the 4th set to get off to a great start to the season with a 3-1 win at Auburn.

Next up: Pacific University at 10:30amET Saturday morning.

Note: Pacific defeated Furman earlier today, 3-1.

What a fantastic comeback in the 2nd set by the Volleybees! They came back from being down 17-11 to win 26-24. Up 2-0 heading to what could be a sweep in set #3.

WOOHOO!

Let's go Jackets!!

Is Pacific any good, mate?
We shouldn't worry about the later game today, should we?

Thanks for keeping up with VB!!

Yes. Pacific comes out of a tough West Coast Conference. They have plenty of great VB players in the most fertile recruiting area in the nation (California).

Furman is worth worrying about. They are the only team who went to the NCAAT at this event in Auburn - and won the SoCon last year. Let's remember, though I believe we are much more experienced and better right now, this same group of Jackets lost at Kennesaw State last year. So, we aren't good enough - at least not yet - to roll out a less-than-A-game and expect to roll over anybody.

Can't get much closer than this match. Tech built a 12-8 lead in set #3, but Pacific comes back to take it, 25-23. Heading to the 4th set. This might go down to the wire. I hope not. Go get it right here, VeeBee's!

Another solid win by the VB's!! Tech takes the 4th set, 25-21, to win the match, 3-1.

2-0 start to the season.

Tech goes for the weekend sweep against Furman at 6pmET later today.

Go Jackets!!!

WOOHOO!

Pacific did fight us. You are right again, Furman brings a little fear defeating those Aubies by the same score we tallied yesterday, 3-1.

It is great bee-zing 2-0 already.

Ladies and germs, now *THAT* is the way to start off a season and school year.

THREE AND OH SWEEEEEEEP, BABYYYYYY!

Great job, Volleybees!

London Ackerman with the MVP award. 'Becca Martin with her 2,500th career assist.
Next weekend at tourney in Kansas....can't wait for following Thurs./Fri home vs. Panthers/Mutts.

In this week's AVCA poll (Aug. 29 release), the VB's did not receive votes on 2+ ballots. That's OK. Our gals have quite the opportunity against some solid competition coming up at Kansas State this upcoming weekend.

Week #1 poll: https://www.avca.org/polls/di-women/8-29-2016.html

Will start a thread to preview the weekend Thursday this week. Tennessee State is 4-0 after a perfect weekend. Michigan is 3-0 after they swept their own kickoff tournament in Ann Arbor. Michigan is 29th in this week's poll. Host Kansas State went out to Hawaii and defeated the home-standing #6 at the time Rainbows along with defeating Arizona (who is honorable mention this week) before losing to #2 Wisconsin in Hawaii. K-State is 26th in this week's poll.

Both Michigan and K-State made the NCAAT a season ago.
