Right now, the Cheaters and Noles are considered to be the class of the ACC. Pitt is right in that conversation as are our Volleybees. The Volleybees (9-3) head north to start out the ACC schedule. Getting 1 of 2 wins will be a just fine start. Getting 2 wins would open some eyes around the conference.
Friday, at Pitt, 7:00pm, ACC Network Extra, Fitzgerald Field House
The Panthers (9-3) have lost 3 matches. They lost to Missouri during opening weekend of the season at Kennesaw State's tournament. They lost to Coastal Carolina, who the Jackets went 1-1 against last weekend, at home. And, their last loss was to Western Kentucky, #25 in this week's AVCA poll, also at home. Pitt does have a solid win over Michigan, #22 in this week's AVCA poll. Certainly, Pitt is one of the ACC's programs who sees making the NCAAT as a legit achievable goal this season.
Last year, these 2 teams met only once...at Pitt. This year, they will meet twice as the Panthers visit Atlanta in early November. Tech almost pulled the road upset a season ago taking a 2-1 lead into the 4th set. Pitt pulled out that 4th set and then went on to win the final 5th deciding set in nail-biting fashion, 15-13. I think Tech is a far better team this go 'round. Freshman, Kodie Comby, is getting better and better. She's providing a nice pump of adrenaline for this experienced team midway through matches. And, hopefully Tech's tough pre-ACC schedule has them less in awe of this road match and more expecting to win. Should be a great match to watch online via ACCNE.
Sunday, at Virginia Tech, 1:00pm, ACC Network Extra, Cassell Coliseum
Tech makes the trip through the Appalachian Mountains down to Blacksburg for a Sunday afternoon match at the Cassell. The Hokies (5-6) have struggled this season having lost 5 of their last 6 and going 2-6 since opening the season 3-0 at home. This should be a win for the Volleybees if they bring their best.
Last year, these 2 only met once in the same scenario (read: Sunday match coming off Friday match at Pitt). The Jackets won 3-1. Here's hoping for another victory.
The Jackets come home next week to face ACC favorite, Cheaters, and the Wolfpack. Good luck to CMC and the Volleybees as they open the ACC schedule.
