Freshman forward scored first career double-double in win over Penn State

Charlotte, N.C. – After posting his first career double-double to help lift Georgia Tech to an overtime victory over Penn State Saturday at Madison Square Garden, freshman forward Baye Ndongo has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week. It is Ndongo’s second rookie honor this season.

The 6-9 freshman scored 12 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, tying the most ever by a Tech freshman and equaling the mark set by Ivano Newbill on Dec. 27, 1990 against Tulane. Ndongo scored all 12 of his points and took 11 of his rebounds in the second half and overtime period against the Nittany Lions, helping Tech prevail 82-81. He went 5-of-7 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the foul line adding a blocked shot and an assist with no turnovers in 35 minutes.

The Mboro, Senegal native is Tech’s leading rebounder this season and ranks in the top 10 of the ACC at 9.0 per game, and is the Yellow Jackets’ third-leading scorer at 8.8 points per game. Ndongo also won ACC Rookie of the Week honors Dec. 4 after leading Tech to a 72-68 victory over Duke with 21 points with five rebounds and four blocked shots.

Tech returns to action Thursday night at 9 p.m. EST, taking on Massachusetts in the opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
