The Braves are from Lorman, Mississippi. Lorman is near the Mississippi River and of course the border between Mississippi and Louisiana. This is a little over an hour drive southwest of Jackson.

ASU's colors are purple and gold. Their most famous FB player is likely QB Steve McNair, who was the 3rd overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft. He enjoyed a 12-year NFL career, played in a Super Bowl with the Titans, and was a Pro Bowler 3 times. Some other alumni who you've probably heard of... WR Donald Driver (Packers) and Leslie Frazier (once head coach of the Vikings and now D-Coord at Tampa Bay).

ASU has won 14 Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC) titles and most recently last year when they were not only SWAC champs going 10-3 overall and 7-2 in conference while beating Southern University in the SWAC title game, they were named the 2014 Black College National Champions. Their lone game against a D1A team last year was a close loss at Southern Miss, 26-20. Two years ago they traveled to Mississippi State and were beaten badly, 51-7.

ASU's head coach is Jay Hopson who will enter his 4th year in the position. Hopson played for the Ole Miss Rebels in the late 80's. He has held assistant positions at Michigan, Southern Miss, and Ole Miss to name a few. After a 4-7 first season, he has led ASU to 9-3/7-2 and 10-3/7-2 seasons in the next 2 years. So, this is a team heading into Atlanta on a Thursday night which is used to winning.

ASU will be breaking in a new O-Coord in 2015 as former O-Coord, Willie Simmons, has taken the head job at Prairie View A&M. Some Tech fans surely remember Simmons as he was not only a QB at Clemson (and then The Citadel for his last season), but if memory serves correct he was a hot target of O'Leary and Fridge out of high school before signing with the Tigers.

Fred Kaiss is the new O-Coord. as he comes over from the same position the last 4 years at Alabama State.

Alcorn State was originally Oakland College, a school for whites established by the Presbyterian Church, but its doors were closed at the beginning of the Civil War so its students could fight for the Confederacy. At the end of the war, Oakland failed to reopen and the college/land was sold to the state of Mississippi which founded Alcorn State as a historically black college in 1871.

Random Factoid: Famed author of Roots, Alex Haley, enrolled at ASU as a 15-year old before transferring to Elizabeth City State College in North Carolina, also a HBC.
