Five storylines that will define conference in 2016

5. Who's seat is the hottest?
...
But what about Paul Johnson?

He's just two years removed from taking Georgia Tech to the Orange Bowl, Johnson's crew went just 3-9 last season and 1-7 in the conference.

QB Justin Thomas -- a former Alabama 100-meters champ -- is the fastest player Johnson has had at the position, but the Yellow Jackets averaged just 256.2 yards per game on the ground last year. Those issues were largely with the offense line, which has just 52 combined starts (81st in FBS), but could see a lift in the form of right guard Chris Griffin, who missed last year with an ACL injury.

A schedule that includes Clemson out of the Atlantic, and seven bowl teams overall (Miami, Pitt, Duke, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Georgia) does Johnson no favors. A turnaround is of the utmost importance, and there are plenty of pitfalls that could keep the Jackets from a bowl game for the second straight year, something the program hasn't dealt with since 1995-96.
These are great comments. GT always does better when the preseason talk is against them.

The host on the U, seemed to think GT was primed for a Coastal run and in so many words Lugybill didn't disagree. Came near the end today.

Paul Johnson's seat is about as cool as a cucumber. If his seat is "hotttest", then it says a lot about 1) the security the rest of the HC's in the ACC have and 2) so many HC's in the ACC are in their first or second seasons at their respective programs.

At this moment - subject to change of course - I believe we will be around the midpoint of the ultra successful 2014 season and the hard luck 2015 season. I don't see us winning 9 or more games. Probably leaning closer to the 6-6, 5-7 or 7-5 area. Even if we go 5-7, while CPJ's seat may go from cucumber to jalapeno pepper, anybody who says/thinks his job is currently in any jeopardy whatsoever is a nitwit.

GT Preview from ACC -

First - Georgia Tech’s first-ever opponent in football
returns to its schedule this year after a 78-year absence. Tech played its first football game in Central Park in Macon, Ga., against Mercer on Nov. 5, 1892, with the Bears claiming a 12-6 win. The Jackets host the Bears on Sept. 10. Coincidentally this year, Tech’s second-ever opponent also appears on the schedule as later that year, on November 19, Tech hosted Vanderbilt at Piedmont Park. This year, the Jackets host the Commodores one week later on Sept. 17.

17.93 - The number of yards per completion that Tech QB Justin Thomas averaged last fall, which led the nation. Thomas completed 75 passes for 1,345 yards. The next closest player to Thomas was Vernon Adams of Oregon at 15.73.

77 - The number of total tackles for Georgia Tech LB P.J. Davis. Davis has led the Yellow Jackets in tackles in each of the past two seasons, and with 237 career tackles, ranks fourth among returning ACC players.

168 - The number of career wins for Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson, which places him fifth on the FBS career active list and first among coaches in the ACC.

329 - Georgia Tech led all FBS schools in fewest yards penalized in 2015. The Yellow Jackets were assessed just 329 yards in penalties or just 27.2 yards per game.
