It's still "that" time of year - aka purgatory as we await the start of CFB...thank Buddha the FB team reports at the end of this week and preseason drills get going this weekend. Until then...

At the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, VA, six Jackets will vie for the title and some securing (or obtaining) their cards for next year and qualifying for the FedEx Cup competition as the season draws closer to an end. The tour heads to Akron next week before the final major in Wisconsin (PGA Championship) August 13-16. Only one more tournament after that (Wyndham Championship in Greensboro) to qualify for the FedEx playoffs and secure cards for next year.

Stewart Cink gets some nice recognition as one of the top 15 power plays (#7) this week... http://www.pgatour.com/power-rankings/2015/07/27/quicken-loans-national.html

Other Jackets competing (Thursday tee time)...

Bryce Molder (7:15am, first group out) - currently #87 in FedEx standings...in good shape to finish in the top 125 to retain his card and participate in the FedEx Cup playoffs...a strong showing in NOVA this weekend would slam dunk those chances most likely.

Stewart Cink (8:10am) - playing some of his best golf over the last 6 weeks he has played in years. Currently #103 in FedEx standings. Really needs to continue his solid play to secure his card moving forward.

Chesson Hadley (8:21am) - currently 72nd in FedEx standings and in good shape to finish in the top 125. He has a streaky game. Always a potential to post really low scores.

Cameron Tringale (12:00pm) - just waiting on him to win one though he has been struggling of late. He is in very comfortable position at 56th in the FedEx standings mostly due to some very good play early in the season.

Nick Thompson (12:33pm off 10) - has been struggling mightily of late and is in jeopardy of missing out on the top 125. Has missed several cuts recently. He sits at #117 and fighting for his life heading into this weekend. Really hope Nick can make the cut and add some breathing room for himself.

Ollie Schniederjans (1:39pm off 10, last group out) - looking forward to seeing what Ollie can do in his 2nd tourney as a professional.

The weather should be nice - warm, but low humidity - Friday thru Sunday, but dodging thunderstorms on Thursday.

Go Golfing J's!

Additional note...though he isn't playing this weekend, Matt Kuchar is currently 9th in the President's Cup points for qualifying as one of the 10 auto qualifiers for the USA team to be played in South Korea Oct. 8-11.

Ollie off to a great start with a 5-under 66 today. Tied for 10th and 3 strokes back after day 1. Nice.

He tees off at 8:54am Friday.

5 of the 6 Jackets make the cut. Particularly happy for Nick Thompson whose -2 round today got him to Saturday and a chance to better secure his top 125 finish. Ollie is -7 and 4 shots out of the lead. He had a short stint at the top of the leaderboard today getting to -10 overall after 10 holes today. He went on a stretch of birdies on 6 of 8 holes between #3 and #10 with a bogey and par mixed in. But, no more birdies after #10 and 1 bogey plus one double bogey kept him out of the last 2 or 3 groups Saturday. He is definitely in contention though. Great to see. Saturday's TV coverage on CBS starts at 3pmET.

Thanks for the update! I took the day off to play a round (and a half) of golf with my kids (who have more energy than I). Would have never known about the impact of Nick Thompson's -2 if not for this place. Glad I stumbled upon this island of GT message board gold.

Ollie finished well and has probably earned enough points to get his card.

If he makes the next 2 cuts, he'll secure it 100%
