I took my family to the spring game yesterday and as many have said already, one of the concerning things was lack of separation from our WR group. Either our young corners are outstanding, our WRs lack the necessary speed to blow by people, or a combination of the two. This got me thinking in regards to WR recruiting.
Do we only target bigger, longer striding kids that can potentially go deep over the top on play action? Many are asking for a short passing game, but when the DBs aren't afraid of getting burned deep it makes it impossible to get the needed cushion to run slants, curls, crossing routes, etc. It seemed to me that last year the corners and safeties played much closer to the line of scrimmage because they didn't respect our ability to protect the passer or our WRs to run by them.
I hear if we get D-Rob he will be an A-back? Why? We need dynamic, shifty kids at WR that can get open underneath. We don't have the Kerry Watkins or Nate Curry types at that position that possess the quicks to shake a defender in man to man coverage on 3rd and 8.
What I am not saying is stop recruiting the bigger, taller kids. However, why not add one shifty, smaller kid per year to play WR, not A-back?
