RECRUITING

Demetris Robertson has remained in contact with CPJ and he has a financial aid agreement with the Jackets, I’m not 100-percent sure he has signed it yet or not, but GT remains confident they are in it. I was told by a good source that D-Rob will probably just show up on campus in June at the school of his choice. GT still thinks they are getting him, but it is recruiting and shenanigans are still possible. I asked my source about the UGA visit this weekend and the person was iffy on if D-Rob takes the visit or if it matters. Saban apparently is talking to D-Rob a lot and killing UGA for everyone else.

Do I think he signs with GT, I have NO CLUE, but it is interesting they are hanging around and are the best fit for him for his life goals other than Stanford who is probably out of it.

GT will continue to have some visitors here and there for 2017, but the bulk of stuff will happen during spring ball and the spring evaluation period beginning in April. I expect a lot more offers to come out next month. I’m not expecting any commits before spring practice begins in three weeks.

FOOTBALL

Spring practice is around the corner and GT will be limited at QB with just Justin Thomas and Matthew Jordan plus the two walk-on QBs for at least the first few weeks while Christian Campbell recovers. For Thomas and Jordan there will be a major focus on passing, pass protection and making reads in the passing game. Jordan made huge strides in the fall in the run game, but he has a lot of work to do in the passing game as does JT and keeping them upright will also be part of the battle. I do not see them moving TaQuon Marshall (not physical enough for that beating) or anyone else to QB.

Defensively something to watch will be the safety play. CTR had really overly complex schemes for the DBs last year and that won’t work with this group so he is going to have to scale it back quite a bit for guys like AJ Gray who aren’t ready to handle that much thinking pre-snap. It should be fine assuming there is some pressure upfront with four or five.

Probably the most excited guys for camp are people like Qua Searcy who missed most of last season and C.J. Leggett and Quaide Weimerskirch. There should be a really healthy competition at A-back and B-back for reps and playing time and that should benefit the team offensively.

Lots of guys struggling so far in offseason workouts. LB Vic Alexander has been struggling with offseason workouts, he is very stiff and not as good as advertised so far, but he is just a true sophomore. Shamire Devine is still struggling too and is overweight and Chris Griffin is still grinding to get back his wheels after knee surgery. He needs to knock the rust off and has been a step slow but he is just 14 months off major knee surgery and then he had a secondary surgery. Justin Thomas isn’t 100-percent yet either and is having some issues getting his legs back and recovering from the beating he took last year.

DT Francis Kallon has had a great offseason and is in tremendous shape heading into camp and the staff hope he is poised for a breakout year. Desmond Branch has looked good and is adjusting to the conditioning program and will trim down a little and should be a step faster than he is now. Brad Stewart is having a great offseason as well at WR. His body is getting much closer to a college one and he has made strides since the season ended.

BASKETBALL

Brian Gregory’s status remains uncertain, but I’ve heard all kinds of stuff. Obviously a win tonight will help, there are so many variables and no great solution here because money is an issue whether you keep him or not.

If it were up to me, I think you keep him but you tell him what the expectations are and maybe he leaves on his own. BG is a great guy but I just don’t see them getting any of the top 150 kids in GA. I’m not sure if they hired a new coach he would be able to do that either so there are pluses and minuses to this whole thing.

Good luck to the Jackets tonight.
