Say it ain't so...Megatron mulling retirement?

I have heard several people say that he's likely to get cut then signed as a free agent. I think he has several good years and will do him well. I hope he gets a real chance at an NFL championship.

Matthew Stafford thinks Calvin is serious about retirement... http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...d-thinks-megatron-is-serious-about-retirement

"I think, anytime Calvin says something, it's not for show, it's something serious," Matthew Stafford said on The Mitch Albom Show on WJR-AM this week, via the Detroit Free Press. "I think you guys have covered him long enough to know that he's a pretty measured person, and everything that he says to the public is a thought-out thing. So in that regard, I'm sure it's thought-out."

Up here in Lions country I can say the Lions are not going to cut him. He would have to retire to leave the Lions or some other team would have to give up a ton in a trade for him. The people in Detroit love him and the backlash of cutting him would be enormous.

I can say it would not shock me if Calvin retired to get out of this dysfunctional franchise and sits out a year and unretires and comes back somewhere else. Or he may retire completely and go to something else. One thing I know about him is he is a very intelligent man.

Not trying to hijack this thread but I take it you're from Michigan as well? That's like 4 or 5 that have popped up here this week. I'm in Flint.

Continuing the hijack for a moment...Cool. I live about 7 miles west of the Detroit metro airport as the crow flies in a little town called New Boston. We get daily updates on your water situation. Hopefully it gets resolved soon.

Go ahead and use my credit card. Calvin needs to be frugal with his money now.

I remember reading a story a couple years ago that he was taking classes online so that he could finish his degree. How crazy would it be if he were to start attending classes on campus?

He reportedly(per ESPN, had previously told Jim Caldwell he was retiring after the 2015 season). Always kept his word as far as I've known.

Today, the Lions announced on their website that it is official. Calvin has stated he will not hold any press conferences.

He broke/holds 15 different NFL receiving records I believe I just heard on Sirius-XM's NFL channel if my ears were working correctly. He will be a Hall of Famer most likely.

This isn't the first time I've heard analysts say this, but the SXM guys did yet another great job pointing out that he redefined class to a position in the NFL that sorely needed it when he came into the league. When he entered the league the era of crybaby look-at-me attention-whore wide receivers was in vogue (Terrell Owens, Chad "Ocho Cinco" baloney Johnson, etc.). He calmed it down by showing you can be an absolute uncoverable stud and not have to beg for attention like so many scumbag WR's like Michael Irvin and now another Cowpunk Dez Bryant did/does with their antics.

GT will miss this asset for their athletic program. He earned a lot of respect for GT.

Who is now GT's longest active NFL player?

Daryl Smith would be (longer than Calvin), but he was just released by the Ravens this past Thursday. I don't know if he will catch on with another club and extend his career or call it quits.

Rotoworld.com advises the Ravens are interested in re-signing him but at a lower price...though, you'd think they would have not allowed him to go in the free agent pool if they were serious about keeping him. He played all 48 games for Baltimore over the last 3 seasons.

He was a 2nd round pick (#39 overall) in the 2004 NFL Draft when Calvin was about to join Tech for his frosh season coming up that '04 fall.

If Daryl Smith is done, I'll have to go back and look up who has the longest tenure among former Jackets.

Love this... http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on...ons-wr-calvin-johnson-could-play-baseball-too

You see, Johnson was an exceptional high school shortstop. Via nytimes.com back in 2007 before the NFL draft:

Johnson attended high school in Tyrone, Ga., a suburb of Atlanta, in a school district regularly ranked among the highest achieving in Georgia. It was why he chose Georgia Tech instead of the University of Georgia, where he surely would have played with a better quarterback who could have helped boost his statistics. It was why his mother, Arica, made clear that he was not going to enter the Major League Baseball draft out of high school despite scouts being interested in him as a shortstop. And it was why he would not play both sports in college after she discussed the nonstop athletic calendar with Georgia Tech coaches.

“I wasn't going to let him be drafted, anyway,” said Arica, who has a doctorate and works in the Atlanta public school system. “He needed to grow and mature.”
