It was one of my favorite football years for GT, as far as surprise endings. We were in the midst of a conference drought, a horrible start, Coach Ross was considering quitting...and then 7 of the last eight went our way. Suddenly, all the players bought in, the confidence started to soar and what a prelude to the greatest season that I have witnessed-1990 NChamps.

I keep hoping this can happen for us this year. Reality tells me we have a different set of obstacles than that team had. Realizing, better off to go drinking with Stech, if he will have me. Better probability factor!

'89 is the last time we ripped the Cesspool a new one on Grant Field. I'd be thrilled if the '15 team could finally replicate that rare feat. Then again, I'd be tickled to death with a 2 pt win in quadruple OT too.

Going into this season both teams were being picked to win their respective divisions. Here we are halfway thru the schedule and both are pretty much out of it.

Right now, just like when Maryland came to Grant Field in '89 we need a win desperately. Any way we can get it. Any score. Doesn't matter. Just win, baby.

Was that not the same year they (uga) went to a bowl game at 6-5 and we did not with a 7-4 record ?

Correct. The mantra you sometimes hear about winning meaningless exhibition games having some kind of positive effect on the following season is unfounded and a myth.

'89 we didn't even go to a MEG, won national title next year. '14 we win Orange MEG and look at us now...kind of like '91 off the Citrus MEG win though perhaps worse this year. There are so many more examples. Do you want to win your MEG? Sure. Does it make any difference to the next season whether you do or don't? None whatsoever. At this point, it appears we'll get a taste of being home for the holidays this December breaking a long streak of MEG appearances.

Using math we still have a chance to play in a MEG. Percent not good, kind of like when you took a test at Tech and there was 10 questions and you would read them first to answer the ones you knew. Than you got to number 10 before you got one that you knew the answer, odds were your could still pass the test but the odds were bad.

Business Math Major here, Atlanta Regional Champ. in 1977 and State Finalist. Promise, to keep this equation as simplified as can be with no calculus applied:

Extra practices for those approximately 40 true Freshmen and Fr.-R/S=14 days. Now, GTJT you are spot on with the MEG-in total agreement and as a fan...would rather not go to it or view it. However as a wise-ole(didn't say old)drinker from Southern Tech once, twice, thrice once said, practice & repetition make for results on Saturdays[or Thursdays]. He was not much into the other sports, but loves football. He definetly has heart. Please excuse that last word during this sensitive time.

Oh and if you guys don't not already know, the other GT Boards are blowing up right now with attacks on one another, all the way to Paul and his pet dog....and I know we all love dogs that do not have a "bull" in front of their breeding name.

One should not talk bad about another's dog. ( of course as long as we ain't talking about the ones in Athens)

Oh I'm fine with math , it's English I had a problem . Did not think you could make below a 0 but on my first English test I made -30. Still passed the class, uhhhh maybe we can win out.

TBH, I've never bought the old extra practices help angle either. By mid-December, a lot of guys are just ready for the season to be over. And, that includes the coaches too. They are knee deep in closing on a recruiting class as a priority at that time. Back when I was a tutor at Ma Tech to the GTAA for 3 years (Senior year and 2 years of grad school), I used to engage with a lot of our S-A's across all sports. The FB guys were focused at that time on ending fall quarter which went right up to the week before Kwanzaa on a good note along with "getting FB over with". Of course, we rarely went to MEG's back then so it was normally over right after Turkey Day anyway. We went to 1 MEG (All American MEG in '85) during my 6 year incarceration at Ma Tech.

Of course, I think the guys enjoyed the MEG over in B'ham in '85 because none of them had ever experienced one before - AND, back then it really was a bit of an accomplishment to make it to a MEG. Well, far better than the idiocy of today where 6-6 records qualify and there are over 40 of these Buddha forsaken things. But, I digress.

I really don't think extra practices in December do diddly. Rarely are extra packages installed. What can you possibly offer in a 2-3 week period that wasn't already offered in the previous 4+ months? Perhaps the scout team guys can learn some new dances? Maybe they have a beer pong party to celebrate going to exciting Shreveport Louisiana. Woohoo!

Note, don't get me started on how much easier football players have it than basketball players and other sports when it comes to schedules with regards to their classes, tutoring sessions, etc. ;)

I always advise I don't speak English. I speak Southern. There is of course a huge difference as you know. I wanted to learn a second language and was thinking about Ebonics. Instead, I learned central Virginia mountains as a second language and now talk like The Waltons.

In high school (true story) my English teacher wrote on the top of one of my papers I turned in... "are you reading the same book as the rest of the class?" OUCH! Come to find out the joke was on her...I wasn't reading any book. HA! So, the answer was NO!

This is the same woman who by the way referred to Ga Tech people as "culturally constipated". At the time I was offended, but as I've gotten older I agree with her completely.

I guess you have now seen the light, or keeping the cell phone light on in the bathroom when needed?

If extra practices don't fill your fancy, how about that reward trip for the Athletic Assn. employees, staff, players, et al? Going to places such as El Paso, Fresno, Shreveport?

After further consideration, I will not sweat us winning 4 of the next 6 to go bowling at Bubba's Alley in South Biloxi-vile. Not sure why I entered us in that free trip to Miami for YellowJacket watching in November. The winner might be better off going to South Beach on the 21st.
