ATLANTA- Storms rolled into Atlanta on Tuesday as the Jacket went in full pads, but a quick move inside to the indoor practice facility kept things on track. Head football coach Paul Johnson said it was a typical day in pads for the Jackets.

"It was like the first day of pads. Every body was a little bit high and hesitant, but that is what you expect. We have a lot of time to play and we will play a lot of football before the first game. We got halfway through (before the rain) and we moved in and it didn't change anything," Johnson said.

The only players who won't be tackled anytime soon are the Jackets quarterbacks who were in gold non-contact jerseys on Tuesday. Johnson says he will let them get hit some but he doesn't want to beat up on starting quarterback TaQuon Marshall before the season starts.

"We will see and we will probably bang them before the first game, but it may be above the waste in scouts at least with TaQuon," he said. "We might get after the other ones."

CPJ said that they are running some 4-deep stuff on the offense with four separate lines and then going down to two lines at other times, that gives a lot of work to the young QBs and B-back which is good.

CPJ said Campbell got a lot of reps but those safety positions are an open competition, but he is the starter and someone will have to beat him out.

CPJ said the CB spots are open competition as well.

CPJ said the OL depth is still in flux, but they won't make those decisions now, they want to see them in pads for a while. He said the guys who've played are known entities, but the other younger guys are the ones they will watch.

CPJ said that Shawn Davis and the other kickers are kicking okay, but they are just now getting into 11-on-11 situations where the competition will heat up, same thing with KR, they are trying a lot of guys but haven't done much live work there either.

CPJ said that Jerry Howard needs to play some, but it will really depend on how he performs when he goes in and what type of game it is and how Benson is playing on the amount of snaps Howard or any B-back will get behind Benson.

CPJ said that they have not talked much about the uniforms with recruits or players, but he knows they like him.

CPJ said that Anree Saint-Amour will be a good pass rusher and the OLBs should be productive there and need more negative plays on D.

CPJ made a good point when asked about the youth of the secondary, he said the old guys didn't lead the nation in pass defense last year so giving new guys opportunities shouldn't produce a worse outcome than what happened last year because the younger guys are talented and capable.

Christian Campbell said that Malik Rivera has been really helpful to them as a bridge since he knows the defense and he is another veteran in that young secondary group.

Campbell said he likes what they are doing much more than the old defense, said he gets down in the box some and gets to blitz sometimes. Said they are only running about seven things with variations and he doubts that CNW will even have to install the whole defense this fall.

Brant Mitchell said that the competition between David Curry and Bruce Jordan-Swilling is really heating up at WILL.

Mitchell explained the Striker and Stinger. The Stinger is a nickel/LB hybrid that rushes the passer and plays coverage whereas the old D was just basically a SAM LB only a DB sized guy playing on the second level. The Striker is an OLB position mirror to the Jacket where Vic Alexander plays as I've explained on here before. Hopefully that sorts out the people.

Mitchell said that Quez is like PJ Davis all over again, makes the same humorous sounds in practice during drills. Mitchell said he is really coming on. He also had praise for Justice Dingle who is backing up Vic at the Jacket LB.

Mitchell also said that Juanyeh Thomas is impressing him in the secondary

Mitchell said the OLs in particular are loving the new jerseys and pants, said the OLs say they can finally move freely in them and they breathe.

Desmond Branch said that Quon Griffin has impressed him so far in camp.

Branch said the DL is really priding themselves on setting the tone, said today him, Cerge-Henderson, Saint-Amour, Tay and Owens did a good job on being disruptive on the field.

Jalen Johnson is back from a torn labrum, his second one, he also had a knee injury when he arrived at GT, said he is finally 100%. Johnson said he is enjoying his new role much more than the way CTR used the nickel. Said he gets to blitz some and cover and is playing more like a LB/S than a S/CB, the Stingers are with the safeties and coached by CSW.

Jalen Johnson said he has been really impressed with how Charlie Thomas has picked up the defense and is coming on camp.

Quite a few bumps and bruises, but no serious injuries yet in camp (knocks on wood) and they are still rehabbing Kenny Cooper who has to rebuild strength in his lower body after being off that foot for so long.
My understanding of the two-deep as of now:

O
QB- T. Marshall, L. Johnson
BB- Benson, Howard
AB- Searcy or Cottrell
AB- Lynch, Jarrett
WR- Camp, Hawkins-Anderson
WR- Stewart, Dolphus
LT- Bryan, Quinney
LG- Braun, Clark
C- Lee, S. Morgan
RG- B. Morgan, DeFoor
RT- A. Marshall, Ivemeyer

D
DE- Saint-Amour, Owens
NT- Cerge-Henderson, Adams
DE- Branch, Merriweather or Glanton
*STRK- Henderson, Domineck
*STING- J. Johnson, C. Thomas
MIKE- Mitchell, Quez Jackson
WILL- Jordan-Swilling or Curry
JACK- Alexander, Dingle
FS- Campbell, Rivera,
SS- Carpenter, Oliver
CB- Simmons, Askew
CB- Kerr, Swilling

If you don't see a guy he is either hurt or is needing to jump some veterans for a spot in the two-deep.
