ATLANTA- Georgia Tech's football team returned to action on Monday after the first break of Fall Camp Sunday. Head football coach Paul Johnson reflected on Saturday's scrimmage and his expectations from camp for the upcoming week.
Offensive line performance was a major concern with the first team offense from Johnson on Saturday. The Jackets only have one player, Parker Braun back who played and started at the same position last year, but the group has a lot of games under their belt as a whole.
"There are positives for anything, but it was too many penalties and mistakes for guys who have played," Johnson said.
With the heat and humidity sky-high in Atlanta, Johnson said it may take until game week for everyone to get their legs fully back.
"I don't think you will see any fresh legs for a week or two. You will have to get back to where you cut practice down especially in this heat," Johnson said. "I think some of the young guys are learning, but I don't have any issue with the effort."
CPJ said Brant Mitchell played really well in the scrimmage, Qua Searcy had a long TD catch.
CPJ said they don't have the final prognosis on Lucas Johnson yet. CPJ said James Graham is playing both QB and WR right now.
CPJ said that Tobias Oliver is doing okay.
CPJ said the defense and the 3-4 system is easier for GT because they don't have to find as many DLs and play more tweeners and speed guys. CPJ said he is interested to see the new game planning. He wanted to simplify the defense.
CPJ said the young guys on D will play, but the older guys will carry the load.
CPJ said there hasn't been much separation in the kicking game. Cliff Gandis is not in camp he tore his knee playing soccer. The other three kickers, Shawn Davis, Brenton King and Wesley Wells are working and he said none have really separated.
CPJ said the 4th A-back behind Qua, Clinton and Cottrell would probably be Omahri Jarrett, but it would be situational, he said also he expects to play one freshmen there at least this season in the top 6. CPJ said he is very comfortable playing Jarrett.
CPJ said that at least one true freshman WR (Malachi Carter) will play this fall.
CPJ said that Zach Quinney is having a good camp and is in the mix, he is backing up Will Bryan at LT, The top 5 tackles are Bryan, Andrew Marshall, Quinney, Jack DeFoor and Bailey Ivemeyer. CPJ said they are interchangable and Bryan could play OG if needed.
CPJ said that Brad Morgan is having an okay camp.
Parker Braun said that he has liked what he has seen from the DE position and he mentioned Brentavious Glanton as a guy who has stepped up, he said at safety Tariq Carpenter has had a big camp and he said even Jakob Brashear is doing much better in the new defense.
Will Bryan said the OL was doing too much and over thinking some in the scrimmage on Saturday and they were better today.
Bryan talked about his new beard and how Andy Demetra (he thoughts Andy was just GT's twitter guy, LOL) challenged him to grow it and how he keeps it soft (beard gel and conditioner).
Bryan said it has been helpful for him to practice and play the same position all camp LT for the first time in several years and that is funny he is back where he started out as a true freshmen at LT.
Guys talked about how TaQuon Marshall is helping lead them when they are struggling on offense in a period of practice and they are trying to not have the lulls they had last year in games and keep the pedal down. TaQuon said he tries to get the guys up and trying to finish practice after the main break and treating that like halftime.
TaQuon said he is good on going live after getting hit.
Jerry Howard said Christian Malloy is having a good camp and has picked up the offense really well. Howard said he is further ahead than where Howard was a year ago at this time in terms of learning the offense and his steps as well as the blocking.
Jerry Howard was in gold, but he is fine.
I also asked the skill guys who the fastest players on team was
Howard said Qua Searcy and Nate Cottrell and then a couple of freshmen (Dontae Smith)
TaQuon said, Jair Hawkins-Anderson, Nate Cottrell and he said JB (got no idea, maybe he meant JP, Jordan Ponchez-Mason or he meant KB KirVonte Benson).
