Georgia Tech wrapped up the final day of padded practice on Wednesday as the Jackets get ready to host Georgia Southern who gave them all they could handle in 2014. Head coach Paul Johnson said his team is pretty banged up after playing five P5 schools in the first six games.
"Practice is going okay, it really hasn't been a problem all year," Johnson said. "We are making some progress getting guys back, but we pretty banged up. It was a pretty physical game on Saturday."
Among the injured are both starting tackles Andrew Marshall and Trey Klock as well as starting right guard Shamire Devine. All three left the Pitt game with injuries though Marshall was able to return while Devine tried twice to play but was unable to play more than a snap because of an ankle injury. Klock has been nursing an ankle injury off and on since the Mercer game.
If the Jackets can get a comfortable lead against Georgia Southern this week, look for the Jackets to mix in backup center Kenny Cooper and offensive tackle Jahaziel Lee both of whom are true freshmen who have played sparingly this season. Johnson said that isn't a key.
"I just hope to win the game," Johnson said.
CPJ said that Justin Thomas is one of the healthier players so far this season.
CPJ said this game is important because they need the win and they want to have momentum going into the bye week.
CPJ declined to talk about specific injuries.
CPJ said the three-guard rotation with Bryan, Devine and Braun will continue.
CPJ said that the coaches will be out on the road this weekend after the game. The team will be off next week on Monday and then go the rest of the week.
CPJ said the team is more resilient than fans realize.
CPJ said the way the schedule works, the good defensive teams were up front and the Mercer game they held the ball some, so the stats are skewed down, but he said the offense isn't as good as it needs to be.
CPJ said that explosive plays are down.
CPJ said that GSU has a veteran defensive in the front seven including a former FSU player and a good front group that will be a tough.
CPJ said the perimeter blocking has been better the last two weeks.
CPJ said that Qua Searcy needs to block better, said he can't just be the guy with the ball, but he is willing just needs to work on it.
CPJ said that GSU has good/faster WRs and there will be some interesting one-on-ones for the secondary this week.
