There is a lot to debate regarding bringing a “new hire” vs someone “within” the program when it comes to making a solid hire for a football program. We are familiar with a lot of these already (O’Leary, Dabo, Ryan Day, etc)
Let’s look at some of the ‘22 Hires taking over new programs and how they have faired so far (I know it’s early in the season, and their tenure, but it’s some food for thought)

Elko-Duke - Pretty Good
Elliot - Virginia. — Bad
Pry - VaTech — Bad
Cristobal- Miami— Fair - 3 straight losses
Venables - Oklahoma— Fair -3 straight losses
Lanning - Oregon - Pretty Good
Riley - So Cal - Good
Beamer- So Carolina- Fair - Beat UK
Napier- Florida- Fair
Kelly- LSU— Bad
Marcus Freeman- Notre Dame- Fair

I list these to say it’s hard to make a splash as a 1st year coach at a program; even the factories. Heck… CPJ used to say frequently, “It’s hard to win football games at this level.” That being said, Im becoming convinced that a “flashy” hire isn’t any safer than promoting a coach within a program.
There is a lot to be said about keeping CBK simply for the established relationships with players, families, current recruits, The Hill, donors, etc. I know “winning cures all,” but building a program doesn’t happen with just a “shiny” new name and I’m not so sure that the data would prove otherwise. There is a lot to consider for sure when checking all the boxes for a new football coach and I feel confident we will do our due diligence this time around to ensure we get a solid coach.
