On Thursday, about an hour after the 49ers’ final practice of the offseason program, Smelter left the facility to board a flight back home. He planned to spend a few days in Macon before heading to Georgia Tech, where he’ll work out before training camp begins in late July. Smelter will train with Baltimore Ravens tight end Darren Waller, his former college teammate.

The 49ers are wide open at the WR position with no real favorites to take over as the #1 guy. Torrey Smith is likely the leading candidate, but no guarantee. They haven't re-signed Anquan Boldin and my guess is they won't on the basis of if they were going to, they probably would by now.

IOW, the door is wide open for DS to step in and take a prominent role in new HC Chip Kelly's offense. Who knows whether Blaine Gabbert or Colin Tattoo Man Kaepernick will be the QB? Looks like Gabbert is likely the guy as CK may wind up elsewhere.

The 49ers have a solid RB in Carlos Hyde and they likely give him the ball 20+ times a game (heads up my fellow fantasy football geeks!!). DeAndre first needs to get himself 100% healthy over the next month before camp opens. Then, he needs to shine in preseason games to assure he makes the 53-man roster come final cut. An added bonus will be if he can shine so bright that he is in the WR rotation to get as many snaps and opportunities as possible.

FWIW, I will be paying close attention to the San Francisco preseason games and will also start a thread in August to update on how our former Jackets are doing after each preseason game (with previews ahead of time) with stats, etc. Will also try to update when games will be televised live via networks (including NFL Network) as well as replays via NFL Network as they normally do in August each year.

The 49ers Preseason schedule is as follows...

Week 1 - Sunday, Aug. 14, Houston at SF, 7pmET
Week 2 - Saturday, Aug. 20, SF at Denver, 9pmET
Week 3 - Friday, Aug. 26, Green Bay at SF, 10pmET
Week 4 - Thursday, Sep. 1, SF at San Diego, 10pmET
