The Lady J's - in dire need of a victory - welcome the Cheaters Thursday night for a 7pm tip. Possibly the most corrupt and fraudulent program in the history of collegiate athletics is 2-1 in the ACC and coming off a blowout loss at Notre Dame by 34 points.

The Cheaters' roster has been significantly altered due to multiple departures by players last year. Head Cheater Sylvia Hatchell has 3 players averaging scoring in double figures:

5'8" Soph Guard Jamie Cherry - 15.0 ppg
5'10" Freshman Guard Destinee Walker - 14.9 ppg
5'11" Freshman Guard Stephanie Watts - 13.4 ppg

Watts has been named ACC ROTW twice this season.

The Cheaters are not a particularly strong 3-pt shooting team as their team percentage to date is 28.6%. They have only played 2 games out of 18 this season on an opponent's home floor - losing at Oklahoma State by 10 and this past Sunday at ND by 34. In fact, 14 of their 18 games so far have been on their home floor.

This is a huge game for the Lady J's. After a brutal ACC schedule in the first 4 games, this is a very winnable game. Tech cannot afford to go to 0-5 and must get on a nice roll with several winnable games on the horizon to get back closer to .500 and middle of the pack in the ACC.

The last meeting between these 2 programs was at the 2nd round of the ACCT last year in Greensboro when 6-seed Cheaters won by 20 over the 11-seed Lady J's. The Cheaters also won on their home floor by 15 last year. Prior to last season however, Tech had won 6 of the previous 8 meetings over the Cheaters.

If I can believe the Media Guide's records, the Cheaters hold an all-time series lead, 55-18. Most of that highly questionable of course in terms of whether their players were actually attending classes, having work done for them, etc.

Additional observations from a look at the current ACC stats (for all games)...

  • Aaliyah Whiteside continues to lead the ACC in scoring at 20.6 ppg...next is Duke's Azura Stephens at 17.8
  • Whiteside is 7th in the ACC in rebounds per game at 7.6
  • Roddreka Rogers is 2nd in the ACC in FG% at 59.7%
  • Rogers is 12th in the ACC in rebounds per game at 7.0
  • Tech is the 4th highest scoring team in the ACC at 74.5 ppg
  • UNC is dead last in the ACC in scoring defense giving up 63.9 ppg
  • Tech is 2nd in the ACC in free throw shooting percentage at 73.1%
  • Whiteside is 7th in the ACC in free throw shooting percentage at 81.3%
  • Tech is 13th in the ACC in defensive FG% allowed at 40.0%
  • Tech is tied for 4th in the ACC in rebounding margin per game at +6.0
  • Tech is 2nd in the ACC in steals per game at 11.7
  • Tilford is 7th, Cryor is tied for 9th, and Whiteside is 11th in the ACC in steals per game
  • Tech is 5th in the ACC in turnover margin per game at +5.0
  • Peresson is 11th in the ACC in 3FG% at 38.1%; Antonia is also 11th in the ACC in 3FG's made per game at 2.0

Good luck to the Lady J's. Let's go get this much needed win!!!!

J-24 Sun. at Clemson 2pm, ESPN-3
J-28 Thu. NOTRE DAME 7pm, RSN
J-31 Sun. BOSTON COLLEGE 3pm, RSN

Both BasketJackets and Lady J's get a midweek game off next week. Lady J's starting tonight need to win 4 of these next 5. For now, I'd love to just see a W...any how, any way.

Lots of energy and smiles by the players out there tonight. Looking good so far. I think we are clearly the better team. Hopefully, the Lady J's can keep this pace up for the full 4 quarters.

Debating as I watch this what is worse...

...fried okra or college women's basketball officiating?

WBB has enough trouble attracting fans as it is (I'm one). It is sad that the fans it has been able to attract has to continue to put up with such incompetence and lack of performance year after year after year. Really sad.

Good, gritty win by the Lady J's. Very happy for the team. They needed it. They fought for it. They had to come back in the 4th quarter to get it. They did. Just made the plays down the stretch.

Now, let's build off of it and get another over the Frenchies who come to town Sunday.

Well done, Lady J's!!!

The Lady J's are of course now 1-4 in the ACC. The losses came against...

at Notre Dame 5-0 in ACC
vs Louisville 5-0 in ACC
at NC State 4-1 in ACC
at FSU 4-1 in ACC

...as all 4 won tonight - Pack winning at Duke very impressive. So, the collective ACC records of the teams who have beaten us is 18-2 (with 4-0 obviously over us).

Fried Okra is better than boiled okra. I yelled 20 rows down at one of them, he just looked up and stared at me.

I'm convinced Jim Harrick Jr. must give the tests to these WBB referees on the rules. What an incompetent collection of nitwits out there calling games. I've seen better refereeing at girls middle school games.

I was so happy for the players last night. The win was overdue and well-deserved. Admittedly, UNC is not among the league's elite, as it usually is, but the Jackets responded to the challenge when UNC went up by five early in the fourth quarter. Gari's 3-pointer to draw within one was clutch and the team fed off of that. Zaire proved to be the tonic.. the second leading scorer with 14 points. Too bad she played only 10 minutes before fouling out. We need a consistent number two scoring threat and it needs to be Zaire.

There is no shame in having lost to four of the top five teams in the ACC. I hope the team has learned from those experiences, especially the runs against ND and FSU. In both those games, the Jackets were in danger of being run out of the gym on the road but they fought back and proved to be tough competitors. That should serve them well as the season progresses.
