THE FLATS – Just eight days from Opening Day, Georgia Tech baseball featured seven players on 2023 D1Baseball’s preseason player rankings, it was finalized today.
Ranked by position, the Yellow Jackets’ selections were Drew Compton (No. 16), Kristian Campbell (No. 31), Jackson Finley(No. 52), Stephen Reid (No. 85), Terry Busse (No. 99), Jake DeLeo (No. 107), and Logan McGuire (No. 140).
A former freshman All-American, Compton enters his junior campaign this season after starting all 60 games as Tech’s third baseman. Compton mashed 14 home runs and drove in 58 runs while hitting .275. For his career, Compton is a .288 hitter with 30 home runs and has driven in 107 runs at Tech.
Campbell will begin his first season of collegiate baseball this season after redshirting as a true freshman last season. Campbell was also ranked by D1Baseball as the No. 25 impact freshman in the ACC.
Two-way player Finley will also look to contribute more this year now fully recovered an injury that limited his pitching last season. In limited at-bats, Finley hit .273 for the season, including .400 in four games against ACC opponents. Prior to his injury, Finley worked to a 2-0 record on the mound in 2021 and sported a 14:0 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Also a former freshman All-American, Reid returns for his junior season after hitting .333 for 16 home runs in 51 starts last year. With 72 hits and eight doubles, Reid provided a hot bat most of the year, including two six-RBI games. Also caught fire in the postseason when he went 9-for-22 with two doubles and six RBI.
An incoming transfer this season, Busse joins the Yellow Jackets after helping John A. Logan win a regional with a 3.29 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 27.1 innings of work. The 6-3, 200-pound right-hander held opponents to a .235 batting average, making 10 hitless appearances and 13 scoreless appearances.
After nagging injuries limited DeLeo to just 30 games last season, he returns in 2023 healthy and ready to go. Despite missing time last year, DeLeo hit .286 for 22 hits, nine doubles, two triples, two home runs and 19 RBI. Prior to his injury last season, he was hitting a scalding .400.
McGuire returns on the mound for his sophomore season after being one of Tech’s top freshman in 18 appearances and four starts. He worked to a 4-2 record and struck out 36 while walking a paltry four total batters in 33.1 innings of work.
