Tech jumps to No. 16; Brown, Dispigna named National Players of the Week

THE FLATS – With its best start to a season since 2016, Georgia Tech baseball is off to a red-hot 7-0 record to begin the 2023 campaign, earning a No. 16 ranking from Collegiate Baseball on Monday morning. RHP Dawson Brown and Angelo Dispigna also earned National Player of the Week honors for their performances against Tennessee Tech.
Brown kicked off the weekend with a career day on the mound for Tech, striking out a career-high 12 batters over a career-long 6.0 innings, needing just 87 pitches to earn his first decision of the season. The Macon, Ga. native held the No. 2 offense in the Ohio Valley Conference to just four hits and three runs, allowing the Jackets time to put up 10 runs over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to seal the victory.
Brown’s 12 strikeouts were part of a phenomenal day for Georgia Tech’s pitching staff that finished with 18 punchouts on the day – just one shy of tying the program record not reached since 1989.
Dispigna was electric for the Yellow Jackets at the plate, hitting three home runs on the weekend. A transfer from Mercer, Dispigna’s first homer in the White and Gold came as a back-breaking grand slam in the eighth inning on Friday against Tennessee Tech that turned a tight three-run game into a seven-run game to lock up the win.
Overall, the Lawrenceville, Ga. native hit .412 on the week with seven hits and seven RBI. He slugged .941 and reached base at a .500 clip, striking out just twice and drawing three key walks.
The honors for Brown and Dispigna give Georgia Tech three Collegiate Baseball National Players of the Week through just two weeks, as Jake DeLeo was selected after on Feb. 20.
Georgia Tech remains at home for a big week in which it hosts Long Island on Tuesday, Feb. 28, Kennesaw State on Wednesday, March 1, and the Game 2 of Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate on Saturday, March 4.
