Jackets could be eligible for a meaningless exhibition game at 5-7?

Some rumours (albeit blasphemous in nature perhaps) on the internet last few days. And of course, if it is on the internet, it must be true.

To this potential news, if it could actually happen, this is my reaction...

...to the entire MEG system.

Yeah, one of those rocket scientists predicted us to the Motor City Bowl in Detroit against Toledo. Stipulation, no 6-6 teams available.

If we win 2 out of three to get to that point, my opinion is a 6-7 final record worth chasing?
I get 6-6, trying for a 7-6 final with the bowl streak continuing.

Didn't want to bring this up but it's looking like a distinct possibility. Here's a link to an article that explains it succinctly.

This is about to get really, really, REALLY messed up.

"That means Georgia Tech (APR of 978), Missouri (976), Virginia Tech (977) and Indiana (977) are all probably going to get post-season invites because they're going to be 5-7 AND will be ranked higher than just about everyone else in terms of academic progress."

At this point, while I'd love to win all 3 remaining games of course (mostly for the W after Turkey Day and less for qualifying for a MEG) just getting to 5-7 is going to be a helluva challenge, IMO. If this team goes 5-7, misses a MEG, but one of the 5 wins is over the Slime to the East then I'll go into the offseason with a smile on my face. I know that isn't a popular view to some Techies but I admit it and will likely always feel that way till the day I'm fertilizing daisies.

I'll take it. I live 45 min from Detroit. Strong chance I'll be the only GT fan there so I'll represent!

It seems like about this time of the year this story comes up. If we finish 5-7 I don't think we need to be in a bowl game. What point would it prove? A few more practices , that hasn't helped so far .

+1

And, it will prove nothing if we are 6-6 either. But, perhaps we'll get a chance to win one of those really cool trophies, put up one of those really cool placards in BDS claiming we are the Motor City Champions, and the players can enjoy playing in a two-thirds empty stadium while collecting some really cool gifts like hair dryers and gift cards and headphones and junk.

A few more practices won't do jack, you are correct. And, winning or losing the Motor City MEG will have diddly to do with what happens next season - contrary to those morons who preach that angle on other sites on the interwebs.

During the first 10 years of my career post-grad-school-graduation from Ma Tech, I spent probably 20% of my time in the Detroit and Windsor ONT areas calling on big automaker customers' trim plants. During all those days in the winter, I think I may have seen the sun one day. In fact, I believe everybody came outside to bask in the glory of a winter day in Michigan seeing the sun. Some appeared to be in disbelief. Perhaps the end of time was near.

(the above is perhaps an embellishment, but not far from the truth)

You have my sympathies during the winter, but the summers are very nice - particularly over towards the lake like in Holland, MI. Many many days on business in Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Holland, and Saginaw. Not sure if being sent to a MEG in Detroit in late December is a reward or a punishment. ;)

Agreed. That's why I didn't want to bring it up before this thread was started. Unfortunately, it does appear that we are in the driver's seat to get in at 5-7 given our strong APR. I see no upside, and I sure don't want to see our program under the media spotlight revealing just how ridiculous the MEG situation has become.

I hear ya! I live in Flint. Moved up from Atl in 1996 and I hate Michigan winters. So damn depressing.

QFT!!!! We ain't getting to 5-7. I thought maybe 6-6 before the French, but no. Not happening. As badly as ugag is playing considering their talent, we will make their putrid offense look dynamic and our offense will be anemic against their defense.

I watched some MAC FB last night for more than entertainment purposes only ;) and if our likely unmotivated team played a Bowling Green, for instance, in Megatron's Palace, it would be butt uuuuuuugly. As in, a complete beatdown to significant proportions. As in, we'd give up close to 50 or perhaps more points.

Reported on MBob's radio bit on GT Athletics, he made reference to a hypothetical 5-7 YellowJacket team not accepting a bowl bid.

After watching Akron the other day(an 8 win bunch already), this revelation suits me just fine. The mid-major gets all pumped up for their "game of the season".

I like the part about AD's not wanting to pay out bowl bonuses to a 5-7 coach. If this nonsense continues, AD's will probably want to change the bowl bonus incentive to a win based metric instead. That said, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could get to 5-7 and become part of this ridiculous discussion?

If losing the bowl game could give a team a sub-.500 record, they shouldn't be invited.
I have to agree if we are 5-7 ( which has yet to be seen) start the off season program and get ready for next year. I know some people say the extra practice time will help but I haven't seen the last 10 weeks has helped. Beat uga and go out on a good note.

It would be great to be 5-7 only because it means we defeated Miami and especially the Cesspool. Hell, I'd take 4-8 with a W over the Scumbags. Well, the Georgia version of the Scumbags that is.

This MEG system is so soccer-momish. It's like they reek with "LET'S ALL BE WINNERS" and "EVERYBODY GETS A TROPHY". It's disgusting.

Do you mean all those years that I got a Little League Baseball Trophy it was not earned? Even with a losing season? You have shattered my memories.

Remember being 5 and the coach saying if you're tired raise your hand to come out. We took the field, hands went up. That told me this was not going to be a pretty group. I hope the jackets don't raise their hands down in Miami. We are not in K-Land or Corey League anymore!

While on the subject of lunacy called D1A CFB, I've noticed this year there is a new trend among the factories. More of them are now extending their stay for road games from traditionally just the night before to two nights. For instance, FSU traveled to Atlanta (boy, that's a long, rugged ride across multiple time zones to get the body equipped isn't it?) on Thursday night instead of Friday afternoon. Kinda funny we beat them and the extra time in Atlanta didn't help.

I heard during a broadcast this past weekend that Texas A&M is doing this now and some of the other SEC schools are. Now, this makes you wonder for a moment. Well, you know, the word "lunacy" that is. These folks aren't staying at the Budget Inn. They are staying at the Plaza. We're talking at minimum an extra 10 grand for the extra night, likely much more.

Yet, these nemrod AD's always have their hands out asking for more donor contributions, raising ticket prices, etc. Out of one side of their mouths they talk about how much more money they are making in the TV contracts while poking their ego-chests out and then out of the other side of their mouth comes the woe-is-me we need more money to survive shtick.

And yet, there are folks who will continually pony up the funds for this. To each their own I guess. I'll stop now in hopes that Tech doesn't do this. I need to go look at all the great buildings we have built with underachieving coaches inside them leading our teams while our AD claims he has no money.

D1A CFB...completely out of control and getting worse every year.

well, I am sure a lot of them have o-line classes anyway, it doesn't really matter where they are, they can still log in enough to get those credits needed for graduation.

Didn't know UNC, Miami needed on-line classes? Is that how they disguise it now?

Hold on, my phone is ringing....think it might be the Harricks wanting me to appraise more land for Donnan.
