Head Men's Basketball Coach at Georgia Tech

It sure is looking like our reclusive man in the high castle will be forced into the spotlight this spring. I hope he doesn't shrivel up and melt like the wicked witch of the west when his man cave is illuminated.

Bark Madley might be joking about Ben Simmons, but I'm not. He would have to sit out a year and why would anyone in the name of Jim Nystrom, come here?

Thanks for the referenced article though, it filled in some answers to my trivia time in another thread!

We do need a new A.D. One that understands basketball, football, hiring coaches that understand the Institute and winning.

I don't care if we make Price or Neal the highest paid Assoc. H.C. in the Nation, just make sure the other one is ready to come aboard and bring us back to the era of 1985-1992 in prominence. No Chris Mack or ties to Bobber. No Archie Miller or connecting back to Dayton. No search committee, if our guys say no, offer Marshall the moon. Who cares if he is difficult, it must have been almost impossible to win consistently at Winthrop and Wichita St.?

Here's a kooky idea for you alcoholic lesbians (or is it so kooky?)...

...1) Tech joins the Big 10 and starts swimming in money...2) it helps attract a difference-making winner as HC in MBB to Tech and we turn a sleeping dog program into a giant money-making machine as Tech MBB becomes yet again the hottest ticket in Atlanta during the winter time...3) our entire dying athletic program gets a lift in many different ways and with the additional revenue we can expand our athletic program as appropriate...4) stech81 never has to get pissed off each year when the A.C.C. FB schedule is released and the conference has done everything it can to assure as many of our Coastal rivals have an extra week off on their schedules to prep for our funky offense (of course the Big 10 could do this as well, but what the hell...we're swimming in money, folks!)

...wait. I just woke up from my dream. Will never happen. Makes way too much sense. Plus, our AD is asleep and we don't want to wake him. He's dreaming of his happier days when his career peaked as Chairman of the NCAAT Selection Committee. It's been all downhill since.

Wonderful ideas, great concept. If they say no to "common sense", the alternative for hoops is finding another Tony Bennett. He can sing out, I left my heart in Virginia instead of San Fran.

Only hope for a good solution is for some donors come in a bail out this situation.

GTAA hired Gregory because they didn't have the money (or didn't want to use the money) to get a top ACC caliber coach. So what makes this situation any different?

Still have liability with Hewitt's contract and will add additional liability for Gregory's contract.

Most think it will take at least $3M to get the next coach at a minimum.

So, unless someone comes through with cash, I don't expect another coach with the credentials who can come in a recruit AGAINST the shoe companies. They are managing many of the top athletes now and steering them into colleges. A newbie won't be able to deal with that any better than Gregory.

So what is likely to happen with a new hire is another inexperienced coach who is willing to come in underpaid for ACC averages. This will surely give GT another 4-5 years but will the results be any better?

I think financially just one more year will help get this situation much better to handle.

But AJC media types are not going to look at the real issues here and they are going to continue to push GT into making a premature move.

Well, it will never happen because we are tied to the A.C.C. and the Grant of Rights thingamabobber. But, I was thinking of just giving Paul Johnson the head coaching gig for hoops in addition to him being CEO, Head Coach and Offensive (npi) Coordinator of the football program. The only problem is we will never pass the ball.

Drum punchline

Can we discuss "buying out the Bob" in this thread or should I transfer over to a new one?

If so, he started April, 2013 on a five year pact. That means around April Fools Day, we need 1.4 million to dig him out of our hole from within his hole(that sounded graphic and obscene, about right for what we have been paying to go see or watch). 700k salary X 2 years remaining? Can stech81 verify the math with that #3 pencil? I would give my #1, but it is all wet.

Gregory is owed about the same as the AD in a buyout, and Blewitt twice the amount of the current coach to settle that contract?

If 5 of us don't drink 5 beers per day, that cost 5$ for every cold one on tap for 5 thousand days...never mind, I 'll just go get another Slow Gin Fizz now.

I think what would be easier, quicker, and definitely more cost-effective is I assemble my associates and we just break some bones. We could kill them all if you think that's a better solution. By the way, if any of you are looking for breaking some bones or just good old fashioned intimidation, give us a call at 1-800-BREAKEM.

We are running a Valentine's Special right now where you can buy one broken bone and get one free. Have a loved one that you'd like some teeth knocked out? Valentine's is a great time to take advantage of our Instant Dentist Special through the end of February too. There's no need to go spend lots of money on getting teeth removed. My associates and I will do it for $100. As many teeth as you'd like. We do require you to drive to our facility at BREAKEM.

Wait. What were we talking about again?

I don't know, but thinking about giving you the hundred to punch me in the nose if I feel like taking in another hoop contest at the shinning glandular. Better to give to you and Guido, Dino, Geno, than to the Tech Ticket Window.

It does kind of feel like the blackjack dealer in Vegas Vacation...

"You don't know when to quit do you, Tech People? I'll tell you what. You give me half of what you were going to spend on season tickets (and all the other stuff associated with going to games that adds up) and I'll go outside the Gigantic Melon and kick you in the nuts. And, we'll call it a day."

Apathy is a beyatch.

Does selling seats help GT find a solution faster?

That is the debated question...
Not in my opinion. It gives them license to increase the price of a seat to make up for the empty ones or the folks who refuse to pay for an inferior product. No knock intended on the SA's we have brought in, can't blame them for coming here at all or the instruction given to get better on the court. I've never had a problem with giving to the Alex. Tharpe Fund every year. Not terribly happy about when the Seat Licensing determined the A.T. amount(fairly certain the Falcons Ticket Holders are about to feel that pinch too).

We can't be expected to pay for their previous mistakes, like Braine-iac giving that absurd buyout to Blewitt all because he was in demand. Several of us wanted him to walk back then. Warren who is an Asst. at VTech or Young(came along later)who is an Asst. at F$U now, would have been better by default. I would have settled for Willie Reese, Dean Keener, Link LaBarrie, his Dad, Pete Zaharis or JT622's beloved Beagle Ginger. Last time, I asked for Marshall to at least get an interview before Gregory, when I heard the news while in Greensboro at the Tourney. Shaka would have been a Smart second choice. Those men, I would pay more for a seat to have here.

This makes 11 consecutive years that Ga. Tech Hoops will not have a winning A C C record within league play. Five out of five for the current coach.

It's even worse because we are not even close to .500. A 7-11 A.C.C. record would be a significant step up.

Hell, I think we've only had 2 above .500 seasons in league play in the last 20 years. 1995-96 & 2003-04.

Correct. And in 2004 (when we eventually made the run through the NCAAT), we were 7-7 heading into the next to last game of the regular season when the team went into Cameron Indoor Stadium and pulled out a nice upset to get to 8-7. We came home and defeated FSU in the season finale (by 3 pts) to get that 9-7 record. We had lost to NC State in game 13 to go to 6-7 before reeling off wins in the last 3 games (at Clemson prior to winning at Duke).

I would love to see another winning record in A.C.C. play again before I die. I'm not placing any wagers on seeing it. Even the great '04 team barely made it over .500. The current A.C.C. membership has 3 or 4 stinkers every year (unfortunately we are one of them and we can't play ourselves), but it has gotten much tougher from the 8 or 9 spot in the league and above with the additions of ND, Cuse and Pitt.
