THE FLATS – Kara Dunn scored a career-high 20 points Sunday afternoon, but Pitt rallied for a double-overtime win in McCamish Pavilion, outlasting Georgia Tech, 85-79. Dunn was one of four Yellow Jackets to finish in double-figures.
Tech (12-13, 3-11 ACC) grabbed its largest lead of the first half off a Carmyn Harrison bucket with 47.6 to play as the Jackets hit seven three-pointers in the first two quarters. A trio of Jackets dropped in eight points each in the first half, and Georgia Tech shot 45.5 percent to hold a 41-33 lead at halftime. Pitt (9-16, 2-12 ACC) came out of intermission stringing together an 8-0 spurt to knot the game at 41-41. The teams kept it within a two-possession game the remainder of the third before Pitt closed the quarter with a 7-0 run to hold a 56-53 lead entering the final 10 minutes.
Georgia Tech would regain the lead multiple times in the fourth quarter and a free throw from Tonie Morganfollowed a bucket by Kayla Blackshear to give the Jackets a 71-68 advantage with 2.5 ticks on the clock. But Channise Lewis connected on a three-pointer as time expired to force overtime with the teams knotted at 71-71. Dunn and Dayshanette Harris would trade buckets in the first overtime period to leave the teams in a 75-75 standstill, drawing a second overtime period. Pitt outscored Tech, 10-4, in the second extra period to secure the win.
Dunn dropped a career-high 20 points and led three Jackets in double-figure scoring numbers. Morgan added 12 points, while Cameron Swartz contributed 11. Blackshear was one point shy of a double-double with 11 rebounds.
Avery Strickland led five Panthers in double-figures with 17 points, while Liatu King notched a double-double behind 13 points and 13 rebounds.
