RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Georgia Tech all-American men's swimmer Caio Pumputis qualified for Brazil’s Olympic Roster for the Tokyo Olympics after he posted a time of 1:58.53 in the men's 200 IM competition at the Brazilian Olympic Trials in Rio de Janeiro.
The 2019 Pan American silver medalist and 2021 ACC 200 IM champion's effort bested the qualifying time by a full second, taking first in the process. A stark improvement for Pumputis whose all-time best mark going into this meet was 2:00.09 from the 2019 U.S. National Championships. Pumputis now sits at No. 17 in the world this season in that event. He is now one of 13 swimmers to qualify for the Brazilian National Team.
This past season at the collegiate level Pumputis was an NCAA all-American in the 200 IM and 200 breast events. After snagging the ACC title in the 200 IM he captured silver in the 200 breast, as well as with the 200 medley relay and 400 medley squads. Pumputis also contributed to school records in the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay, 400 medley relay and 400 free relay during ACC's.
The 2020 Summer Olympics are scheduled to be held on July 23rd through August 8th.
