No. 10 Yellow Jackets take on No. 20 Texas in four-team match challenge

Waimea, Hawai’i – Because of high winds strong enough to move golf balls on greens, the Amer Ari Intercollegiate golf tournament was cancelled Thursday. Round 1, which had begun on Wednesday, was cancelled after five holes were played and rescheduled as part of a 36-hole today Thursday, but after three holes the winds had not abated and the entire event was cancelled.

To salvage one day of competition and the trip to Hawai’i, the two ACC teams (Georgia Tech and North Carolina) and the two Big 12 teams (Texas and Texas Tech) in the original Amer Ari field organized a match play challenge for Friday and called it the ACC/Big 12 Showdown. The 10th-ranked Yellow Jackets will take on the No. 20 Longhorns in one match, while the No. 3 Tar Heels and No. 4 Red Raiders will face off in the other. All six players for each team will participate.

The 18-hole matches commence at 1 p.m. Eastern time at Hapuna Golf Course, site of the original event, where winds are expected to be calmer. Each team match will consist of six individual matches, the winner of each counting one point toward his team’s score.
