A bad week 1 going 1-4 on point spread plays. I was surprised the Hokies D didn't perform better. If UVA executes better in the red zone, that would've been a cover. And, damn you Marquise Williams...or should I be blaming the play calling more? Regardless, woulda shoulda coulda don't pay the bills.

Here's hoping these 5 this week will get me better on track for the season...

Maryland -7.5 over Bowling Green, 12:00 Big Ten Network
Bowling Green is a good MAC team who was run (pun intended) all over by the Vols rushing attack this past Saturday. This should and probably will be a good game for the first 3 quarters before the Twerps pull away to cover.

Clemson -17 over Appalachian State, 12:30 ESPN-3
The Tigers will not overlook the Mounties to their big ACC opener next Thursday at Louisville. DeShaun Watson had a 186 passer rating last week going 18 of 22 for 194 yds and 2 TD's (no INT's) before yielding to the backups. I see more of the same against the visitors from Boone.

Georgia Tech-Tulane over 54.5, 3:30 RSN
Tech could go over this total on their own.

Georgia -20.5 over Vanderbilt, 3:30 CBS
Vanderbilt is bad. Really bad. We're talking bad. Like the opposite of good. Like Redskins and Braves bad. We're talking bad. Georgia's 2nd string could probably win this game by at least 2 TD's. With QB's still needing to prove themselves, even if a backup comes in with a lead, expect the Georgia offense to keep the pedal to the floor. CBS may wish it still had the US Open Tennis TV coverage with this yawner on.

Tennessee +1 over Oklahoma, 6:00 ESPN
Cumberland Avenue will be jacked up for the biggest home game in quite a while and the talented Vols squad will reward their 100K fans in Neyland with a W. Dobbs is a solid QB and he has a stable of weapons at the skill positions to lean on. Getting points at home on a Saturday night? It's Football Tiiiiiiime in Tennesseeeeee. Vols get it done.

GLA!

I took action on your #2 thru #4 as soon as the books opened - those look tasty. The absence of Byerly makes the 54 o/u on our game interesting if our D does what I expect it will do. I'm hoping CPJ will work the passing game with JT liberally to acquire some teachable film for our inexperienced WR's and AB's ahead of ND. If that happens, the over is easy money. If we go with Swilling (or Jordan) up 28-7, the under is in play.

I expect our 2nd-3rd string defenders to give us some points in the 4Q. This game has a look and feel of the Kansas game back in 2011 to me (66-24). Looks like any rain will be gone or non-existent so I expect the field conditions and weather in general to be outstanding. 73 degrees at kickoff in early September? Awesome!!!

Week One (3-1)

Season (3-1)

This week:

Marshall -3 @ Ohio - Marshall is much more explosive offensively than Ohio.

Clemson -17.5 vs. App State - Just better athletes

Boise State -2.5 @ BYU - It is hard to pick against the Cougars at home but Boise should be good this year.

UTEP +21 @ Texas Tech - It is hard to cover 21 with an awful defense.

Good picks and congrats for the Week 1 good start to the season. BYU has to replace their QB, Hill, and that is a huge loss for them IMO. I like that pick.

Marshall's starting QB, Michael Birdsong, is a favorite of mine. He lost out to Vad Lee in spring practice in 2014 with new HC Withers favoring his former recruiting target Lee. Birdsong was primed to be the starting QB at JMU and transferred to Marshall in wake of losing the starting role. Had to sit out last year due to transfer. He's a big dude with a frame the NFL people like. Just like Vad's move was a win-win with GT, I think Birdsong's move to Marshall is a win-win for both JMU and Marshall. I like that pick as well. Pondered it for a few minutes myself in fact.

I watched the entire Marshall/Purdue game. Marshall ran a lot of zone/read with Birdsong, which surprised a lot of people, including me. Doc said he is a good runner and they want to take advantage of it. It is an odd fit for their usual heavy dose of passes.

Birdsong showed a few flashes but looked a little rusty. There should be that cliched big improvement from week 1 to 2.
