Both teams are coming off week-long layoffs for exams. The Rams are under first year HC, Will Wade, after Shaka Smart departed this past offseason for the gazillions of dollars at The University of Tejas.

The Rams have been dancing the last 5 years in a row, 6 of last 7 and 7 of last 9. Of course, they made the Final 4 five years ago.

The 2 programs have met twice previously with Tech taking both games. Tech won by 21 at home when ranked #3 in the nation back in late December of 2003 (before going on to the national final game later that season). Note, VCU made the NCAAT that season as well. Tech's other win came in November of 2011 (the season after VCU went to the Final 4) by 13 pts at the Charleston Classic.

This is a big game in many ways. First, it will be viewed as a quality win for either team. Perhaps more for Tech as VCU is more likely to go dancing than we are sitting here in mid-December. VCU has had 3 narrow losses to strong teams including the 2 teams who played in the national title game last year and to FSU who many pundits believe will be dancing and make a lot of noise in the ACC this year.

Back in the preseason, I had us at 6-2 at this point in the season (though a W over ETSU and a L at Tulane). I had us losing both games this week (also at the dungeon Saturday pity the thought). It would be awesome going 1-1 this week - especially if the W is at Hell. Going 2-0 would be a fantastic sign for this BasketJackets team in terms of providing confidence and hope for the schedule on the horizon in January.

Duke hosts Ga Southern at 7pm on ESPN-2 just before our game. Hopefully they start on time and get done by 9 so our game can tip as planned. I highly doubt that game will be going to overtime. The Lady J's host Prairie View at 6pm for any who want to make an extended night of Tech Hoops out of the evening.

CBG needs a big win. He has 2 opps for them this week. In fact, the Tech Athletics community as a whole could use a pick-me-up, IMO. Fingers crossed. GO JACKETS!!!

ESPN.com quick preview and prediction of the VCU-GT game... http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebask...redictions-close-games-becoming-unlv-standard

VCU at Georgia Tech (Atlanta), 9 p.m., ESPN2, Tuesday: Both teams need a signature win, and this game will be it for whoever prevails. Georgia Tech was not in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, so although it has beaten Tennessee and Arkansas, VCU is arguably its toughest opponent to date. The key for the Yellow Jackets will be handling VCU's pressure. The Rams' defense ranks sixth in turnover percentage, according to Ken Pomeroy. All of VCU's losses have been near-misses against Power 5 schools. The Rams led Duke early, led Wisconsin in the second half and watched its rally fall short against Florida State.

Prediction: VCU 74, Georgia Tech 73.

GTJT622-
Do you think VCU is tougher than Villanova? 'Nova looked scary on defense to me. Jay Wright and Gregg Marshall are my franchise start-up coaches.

Love your prediction for a close game. Still hoping we pull both of these next two out.

I don't think VCU is tougher than Nova, though I think VCU has proven already that they can play with anybody in the nation so by March we may find out in the end VCU is every bit as tough, if not tougher, as the Cats. I say if Nova is the 1 toughest opponent on our schedule to date, then VCU is a 1b. VCU would be an upper division team in the ACC and should give us a good idea of how we may do against the likes of the Carolinas, Dukes, etc., on the horizon.

"Brian Gregory like what he sees from Georgia Tech team"... http://www.macon.com/sports/college/acc/georgia-tech/article49760125.html

Let's hope he's right...

"We're a lot better, a 100 times, but you've got to be better during the 40 minutes you play," Gregory said. "Being better, being more cohesive, we have more options, we're more talented, we have great experience ... you have 40 minutes twice a week to prove that.

"You look at the numbers, look at practice, look at the games, look at the plays you make that you've never been able to make before. Add those up, and it puts you in position to be 6-2."

If we are 100x better, then if we end up in the bottom 3rd of the ACC, .500 type record, etc., then I'm not sure what can be said anymore. Here's hoping like he says, it will show up during the 40 minutes we play actual games. Go Jackets!

Come Saturday afternoon, we will have learned a lot about this patch work group that CBG has assembled via the transfer route. After that, we get to gorge on holiday cupcakes before serving as canon fodder in the early part of the ACC schedule. Next two games will be telling.

+1

The Tech Family sure could use a good dose of feel-good right now. The BasketJackets could be a nice pump of adrenaline for a fanbase that is collectively really down in the dumps right now. Other than the Miracle on Techwood, we haven't had much to buzz about since February's signing day.

Going 1-1 this week would be OK. Not good. Certainly not bad. It means we are likely 10-3 heading into the brutal ACC.

Going 2-0 this week would be that feel-good shot in the arm we all need as a fanbase and especially more important some significant confidence building for CBG and the team.

Going 0-2 this week would be very bad. 'Nuff said. (note, preseason I predicted us to go 0-2 this week...I sure hope I'm wrong on that)

A view from Richmond... http://www.richmond.com/sports/college/atlantic-10/article_844688dd-dbf0-5655-a2ed-03805e6c9275.html

The underlined sentence pasted below from the article about the Rams is very telling...

The Yellow Jackets rank 10th nationally in rebounding margin per game (12.4) and fifth in offensive rebounds (16.1). Forward Charles Mitchell (6-8, 256 pounds), who has recorded a double-double in every game, ranks fifth nationally in rebounds per game (13) and eighth in offensive rebounds (4.5).

“They’re pounding people on the glass by 12, 13 rebounds a game, which is just astronomical,” Wade said.

VCU has outrebounded its opponent in each of its five wins this season. It has been outrebounded by an average of 7.3 in each of its three losses.

If we can limit VCU's 2nd chance opps down the stretch we can get a nice W. Let's go Jackets!!!!!!

If we win the rebounding battle, this is a victory. We are *supposed* to be a good rebounding team, so it's looking good.

Light bulb finally turning on for T-Jax perhaps. Tech up by 10. T-Jax passes up a 3, drives to the glass, draws defense, pitches out to a wide open MGH for a 3 to go up by 13. He made that play. Previously he throws up a brick from 3. Nice to see

Huge win for the Good Guys. One of the best games in the CBG era and certainly one of the best halves in a long time. Now let's go kick some Cesspool ass, Jackets!!!!! Woohoo!

Man if Monte Morris had came here and not Iowa St.... We are a solid pg away from being a possible second weekend NCAA tournament team. That class of Poole, Carter Jr. and Bolden has really hurt us.

Earlier this season, I was wondering if CBG had forgotten how to coach defense. Tonight ended that worry. We played outstanding perimeter defense against a team that can kill you with the three ball. It came at the cost of rebounding - especially early - but we smothered them. This was a most encouraging performance by the Basketjackets!

Dead even Pick 'Em to +/- 2 pts either side. Regardless, it is going to be viewed as a 50-50 game heading in.

Was hoping their higher RPI and home court advantage would have them laying a handful of points. Oh well. Thanks!

That was an excellent game for the Jackets. They still had a few slumping minutes, but several of the players stepped up. great game.

this season might get real exciting.
