The Regional Sports Networks carrying the game Tuesday night include:
This is a huge game as most all are down the stretch for all. Clemson is holding onto some very thin NCAAT chances, IMO. Their RPI has dropped to 103 and they have lost 11 overall games now. They have to sweep their remaining regular season games and perhaps get to the A.C.C.T. semifinals. Tall task at this point.
With a surprising 2-0 week and a rare back-to-back A.C.C. winning experience, Tech is breathing down the necks of Florida State and Va Tech ahead of us in hopes of getting at least to the 10th seed and avoid having to play on Day 1 of the A.C.C.T. Tech has a very winnable game coming up this weekend at Boston College on Saturday so with a W over Clemson, the Good Guys at least on paper have an excellent chance at extending a 2-game winning streak out to a 4-game winning streak with games left at Louisville and home vs Pitt.
A win over Clemson would assure a winning regular season, 6 conference wins which would tie the best number of regular season A.C.C. wins in the CBG era, and set up a chance to get to 7 with 3 chances left. The last time Tech won 7 A.C.C. games was 2010, the next-to-last year for Blewitt when the team made the NCAAT. It should be noted that the conference only played 16 games then as opposed to 18 now, so the record was 7-9.
Clemson of course handled the Jackets in Greenville 9 days ago by a final 14 pt margin. The first half was very tight with several lead changes. Tech fell apart at the end of the 1st half when inbounding the ball directly to a Tiger who hit a jumper at the buzzer to take a 5-pt lead into the locker room. As we've seen all too often, Tech kept it close for the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half as the score was in favor of Clemson by just 5 pts with 4:56 to go, but the Tigers went on to outscore Tech 11-2 the rest of the way.
Chuck Mitchell grabbed 19 boards and scored 11 pts in that game. MGH, who has been on a torrid pace and is coming off hopefully a confidence-building last second winner for the BJ's, only scored 10 at Greenville.
Hopefully, CBG and staff see who their 8-men rotation needs to be and if we can avoid foul trouble, I like our chances if we can stick to those 8 guys pretty much the full 40 minutes. They are of course MGH, Smith, Stephens, T-Jax, Chuck, Lammers, Jacobs and White.
Tech, who is now 70th in the RPI has the 9th best RPI in the A.C.C. (including UofL), defeated Clemson at the Gigantic Melon last year by 11 pts.
MGH now has 1,556 points scored in his career. Guys he will soon pass and have a chance to pass coming up with at least 5 games left include...
15. John Salley 1,587
14. Bruce Dalrymple 1,588
13. B.J. Elder 1,616
12. Roger Kaiser 1,628
11. Tony Akins 1,658
10. Malcolm Mackey 1,736
As stated in a thread recently, getting past Akins seems very "doable". Getting to Mackey will require not only averaging around 20 ppg, but a nice run for additional games in the postseason...which now seems more likely as the potential for a NIT bid or some other postseason tournament could happen if the BasketJackets can go 3-1 in these last 4 games (also "doable").
