The Blue Devils have had the week off to rest and get some things righted as they are an unusual 4-4 after 8 games in conference play. Duke still has a strong RPI (27) and really at this time is no threat of missing the NCAAT. Having said that, they can't afford to lose games like at struggling Ga Tech, who they have dominated over the years. Tech (69th in the current RPI) however is mutually viewed by pretty much everyone in the conference as a "dangerous" team. A team that will battle you for 40 minutes, keep the game close (as Tech did at Cameron Indoor during Duke's national title season a year ago), and with a break or two late in the game could surprise you.

Duke has lost 4 of its last 5 after opening the conference schedule with 3 straight wins. This AP article suggests Duke is in its worst slump since 2007... http://sports.yahoo.com/news/no-24-duke-looking-break-worst-slump-since-223734764--ncaab.html

But, who are we kidding here? They are bringing high school All-Americans off the bench. After this game, Duke has a chance to get on a bit of a roll at home, though the competition will be fierce as all conference games not involving Boston College will be this season. They return home to face NC State, Louisville and Virginia before traveling to UNC and Louisville.

Duke is of course led by 6'5" Sophomore Guard Grayson Allen, who is averaging scoring 20.3 ppg. Duke has 5 guys averaging scoring in double figures and 4 guys who are hitting 39% or better from outside the arc. Allen is the least of those 4 at 39%...the other three (Ingram, Jones and Thornton) are all at 40% or better.

Duke is 9th in the nation in scoring per game at 84.9 ppg. They distribute the ball really well around the perimeter and as usual have terrific spacing on the floor offensively. Plumlee gets a lot of room to move around and gather garbage baskets off the misses they have as well as the help defending leaving him open for easy pass catches and finishes when defenders are beat on drives. Tech obviously must defend the perimeter and hope Duke doesn't get hot from deep. If they do, it will be lights out. Having said that, Tech should offensively have an advantage in the post.

When the point spreads are released later today, I expect the Devils to open around 5 point favorites. If Tech wins, I'm sure Ratface's back will start hurting even worse. Expect as usual for all the close calls to go Duke's way. Tech will have to be about 10 points better than Duke most likely. As usual, there will be a lot of blue in the Enormous Melon late Tuesday night. Hopefully our guys and fans will quiet theirs. This is the start of a stretch where Tech plays 5 of the next 7 at home and the next 3 at home. The 2 roadies sandwiched in between are winnable games at Clemson and FSU. Getting February off to a good start with a home win over Duke could do wonders for this team and season.

Duke leads the all-time series, 69-23. Also, they are 26-15 at Tech. Tech has lost 8 straight in the series as well as 12 of the last 13, and 29 of the last 32. The last time Tech hosted Duke when Duke was not ranked was Feb. 7, 1996. Tech won 73-71 in overtime. Tech went on to win its only regular season conference "title" that 1996 season behind Harpring and Marbury. Note, we played Duke in 2007 at Cameron Indoor when Duke was not ranked and lost by 9. Tech lost at Duke a season ago by 6 pts when the Devils were ranked 4th in the nation.

Here's your hope...

...we will play them close for 35 minutes. That's us. That's what we do. GEICO could make a commercial about us in that regard.

Then, we'll crumble over the last 5 minutes. We have to just hope we have some kind of lead heading into the final 5 minutes that we can squander. Then, hope (lots of use of the word "hope" here as I'm trying to give some to you) Duke misses a ton of shots down the stretch and we don't dribble the ball off our feet and ankles at least 7 times in the last 5 minutes. Further, we need to hope that Ratface's back hurts so bad that he didn't come out of the locker room at halftime so the refs will perhaps swallow their whistles down the stretch and not give Ratface all the calls that he most definitely will get as usual at crunch time.

If none of that is giving you any hope, here's something else perhaps you can hope for...

...just remember, it doesn't really matter who wins or loses. It is more important whether you score at tonight's social...

It doesn't matter whether we win...or we lose. Because all the really good looking girls will STILL go out with the guys from Rutgers-Durham because their mommies and daddies have all the MONEEEEEEEEEYYYY!

I'm tellin' ya...it...just...doesn't...matter...whether we win...or...we lose!

There's hope for ya.

Duke opens "only" as a 3.5 pt favorite at Ma Tech late Tuesday night, FWIW. A little smaller spread for the Hitler Youth to cover at opening than I thought we'd see.

After a weekend of rest and Duke being in dire need of a win. 3.5 points seems like a very small margin.

oh, and thanks for trying...

3.5 sounds about right. Tech takes a 5 pt lead into the final 7 min, and loses by 3 or 4. Vegas has caught on.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if we have a 5 pt lead with 7 minutes left, mate. But, us blowing it in the last few minutes of the game? Naaaaaah, come on. We never do that. ;)

I cringe whenever we go up against a team that is good at spreading the court offensively. Seems like we always get caught in a bad switch involving one of our two post players - and our rotations are generally late (or sometimes non-existent). I know it's not "what we do", but if Duke starts to eviscerate our man D, I'd like to see us try zoning them up. One idiot's opinion, of course...

In honor of the old card section at Grant Field (a tradition I wish had not ever gone away)...

AJC's Ken S's 5 things to know before the game tonight... http://georgiatech.blog.ajc.com/2016/02/02/5-things-to-know-before-georgia-tech-duke/

Krzyzewsky’s evaluation of Tech:

“I think they’re a lot better than they were last year. I think they’re really good. Like a few teams in our league, there are a number of teams in our league that you’re a few possessions from being a couple of games over .500 and a few possession between being two or three below (.500). They’ve lost some really tough games but they’ve been in every game. I think they’ve done a really good job. I really like Brian. I think he’s a hell of a coach and a great guy. … They show up to play all the time and he’s put them in a position to win. That’s what I look at in coaching. Does a coach have a system and keep his team up and are they in position to win each time they play. Certainly, Georgia Tech has done that.”

Breaking news... Ratface will not coach tonight. He stayed in New Jersey from illness. Capel will lead their team tonight. Back problems starting again perhaps?

With 3 minutes left, we are 2 of 17 (11.8%) outside the arc. Rutgers-Durham is 11 of 23 (47.8%).

Someone needs to communicate the point to Tadric that he cannot shoot the basketball.

Someone needs to communicate the point to Tadric that he cannot shoot the basketball.

I would recommend our buddy stech81 writing a letter to the head coach, but his letters are so wordy and long-winded it probably wouldn't amount to anything. Then again, I think going right up to Tadric and shouting...

...STOP SHOOTING THE F'ING BALL FROM FARTHER THAN 4 FEET FROM THE BASKET!!!!

...wouldn't work either. *SIGH*

If someone does write a letter to the staff, might it please include the two words "resign now". In either order will suffice.

Thank you on behalf of my television screen and our car that refused to go down there and be next to it or part of losing another lead in the second half.

Such a promising first half turned south when Duke regrouped and went straight man to man...

Ball handling lost that game. I can't believe they had such a horrible second half. And again missed FTs kept them from keeping it close.

Shot of the night last night was Stewart Cink's 94 foot putt...

As the PGA Tour TV ads go...

...these guys are good.
