This game likely tips off closer to 2:10 or 2:15 as the ACC Network has a noon tipoff from Duke as the Hitler Youth host the Turkey Buzzards.

ACC Network affiliates listing: http://www.theacc.com/news/acc-basketball-on-acc-network-virginia-at-georgia-tech-01-09-2016 (the game will be carried live via ESPN-3/WatchESPN for those who can't get it via an network affiliate)

Napoleon Bennett takes his troops outside the Moonshine Commonwealth for the first time since a 6-pt win at Ohio State back on December 1st. The French are 12-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC coming off an upset loss as 12.5 pt favorites at Blacksburg this past Monday night. They have played 3 games this season on opponents' home floors and are 1-2 in those games - losses at GW and VPI&SU and the win at Ohio St.

Bennett's bunch returns almost its entire roster from its 30-4/16-2 team last year only losing Justin Anderson to an early entry to the NBA and senior big man Darion Atkins. They are loaded with experience starting with Sr. Guard and Atlanta area product Malcolm Brogdon. He is a Naismith Award watch guy. He leads the team in scoring currently at 16.6 ppg. 6'8" Sr. Forward Anthony Gill is right behind him at 15.4 ppg. The other double figure scorer is Jr. point guard, London Perrantes, who is coming off a very nice 3-pt shooting effort (7 of 9) in their loss at VPI&SU.

Yet another senior (I told you they were experienced, right?), 7'0" Mike Tobey, who recently was coming off the bench, is their 4th leading scorer currently at 7.6 ppg.

Like always, Bennett's teams are focused on defense-first. This will be a 180-degree departure from our first 2 games in the ACC against faster-paced offensive-minded teams in UNC & Pitt. France allows 60.4 ppg which is 8th in the nation. But, don't be fooled into thinking this team isn't efficient offensively. They are 9th in the nation in FG% at 50.4%. By comparison, Tech is tied with Oral Roberts at 89th nationally with a 45.9% FG pct.

As we saw last night from the nation-leading Pitt Panthers with their stellar free throw shooting, the French are pretty darn good too from the charity stripe. They are 11th nationally hitting at a 76.0% clip.

When the point spreads are released Friday afternoon, we can expect the French to open around a 7 to 8 pt favorite. Hopefully, Tech's students and fans will show up and make some noise as the team really needs them. A Tech upset would not shock me, but I think the French (especially coming in off a loss) will have to play a below average game for the Jackets to win this one. Would love to see it happen of course.

Go Jackets!!

This will be a tough game, especially after UVA lost the last one. Their coaches will work extra hard this week to make sure that doesn't extent to a second road loss.

GT needs to bounce back from the Pitt loss and get this home win. It will be a tall task.

Hope the students show up in masse.

If the officials call this game to the letter of the updated law, we have a decent shot. After watching our last two, I'm inclined to play GT on the money line when the books open.

Agree completely. More reason why I wish we'd play Ga Southern in BDS every year.

Virginia opens as 7 pt favorites. The French have won 8 of the last 9 outright and have covered the spread in all 8 wins. Let's hope tomorrow is an exception.

Other opening lines for the ACC games Saturday...

Virginia Tech +17.5 at Duke
Pitt +4 at Notre Dame
FSU +8 at Miami
North Carolina -7 at Syracuse

Nice first half by the Good Guys. Really stupid timeout called by us at the end of the 1st half. Makes absolutely zero sense. I realize we had a foul to give, but even that was F'd up. You don't commit that foul while leaving them 3.7 seconds on the clock from halfcourt. Dumb ass move by CBG.

I expect the French to make a run to get right back in this. Hopefully not of course. We just need to maintain this lead and keep finding Smith. The bigs - other than White - have made some nice moves (especially Jacobs) offensively. Defense looks much better. We are making the French work for everything for the most part.

OHHHHH HEEEEELLL YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS!

That was a huge win there boys and girls. Nice!

Major tip of the cap to Quinton Stephens who stepped up today and was the difference. Nice free throw shooting down the stretch by Jacobs as well.

Well done, Jackets. Finally got over the hump. Now, let's head up to Michiana and get one on the road Wednesday night.

WOOHOO!!

So very happy for the guys and especially CBG. You know the last minute of the game which took about 15 minutes it seemed to finish seemed more like 15 hours to CBG.

Great to see smiles on our players' faces instead of heads shaking. Avoided the 0-4 start. Protected Cremins Court in front of a good crowd. I know there were a lot of Frenchies in there but glad to see them leave with frowns (and the same 1-2 record as us). That win also could be big come committee gathering time. Hey, you never know. Well done, Jackets.

James White deserves a shout out for his boost he gave the team early 2nd half to keep the French about 9 pts away.

What was the deal with Jorgy today?

As of 5:30pmET, Warren Nolan's RPI Live advises the Good Guys have moved up 27 spots since Sunday now to #41 with the big win today obviously helping tremendously. We likely get another bump before the day is over because Pitt has dominated the Irish in South Bend pretty much since the opening tip in a game about to be decided in the next 30 minutes.

It feels great for this program to win what feels like a meaningful game. This team has looked like they belong in all three conference games so far and they broke through in a big way this afternoon! Moving MGH to the point and force feeding Q early in the game were bold adjustments that worked out brilliantly in this game. This was also our best defensive effort so far. We made a highly efficient offensive team work for most everything today. It's a good day to be a BasketJacket fan.

Parenthetically, as mentioned earlier in this thread, I wagered on the Good Guys to win outright in this one which makes the win that much sweeter. It has been a couple of years since I've dared wager on the BasketJackets, so my timing was dead on. Let's go and get one on the road and pull the record even at 2-2!!!

Box score observations in no particular odor...

-Stephens 6 of 8 from the field...4 of 4 from 3-pt land...24 minutes...5 boards...16 pts...AMAZING!!
-Jacobs, Smith & Stephens all score 16 pts each
-Jacobs went 6 of 7 from the line...makes down the stretch kept the French at bay
-Tech out-rebounded the French, 41-29
-Good Guys went 8 of 15 (53%) from outside the arc...France went 4 of 18 (22%)
-Tech once again had single-digits in turnovers with 9
-Smith took 17 shots...that's only 38 below the minimum I think he should be taking :)
-Lammers took 1 shot (a baseline 15 foot jumper) and drilled it
-White led the team with 9 boards
-Brogdon took 20 of their team's total 57 field goal attempts...he went 1 of 9 from 3 pt land
-France came in as a top 15 free throw shooting team in the nation...they went 14 of 22 (63.6%) today...far below their norm
-Tech's bench outscored theirs 19-8
-Tech got 15 second chance pts to their 7

With Pitt's 4-pt win at ND now in the books, the Good Guys move up to #39 in the RPI.

Very good game. Virginia really did a good job in the second half od limiting GT's outside shots that were coming so easily. If GT had hit more free throws at the end UVA would have backed off and ended it sooner. I am thankful GT hit enough to keep it 6-8 points. Really good defense at times.

I am excited to see the Jackets Wednesday! Hope they can make it 2 in a row.
