The Well Endowed Scholars travel to Hell Saturday to hopefully keep this current 4-game winning streak alive. Going 4-0 over the Cesspool is the one shining bright spot to the CBG era in the W-L conversation.
Tech leads the series, 105-86. And, that includes Tech avoiding the lame attempt to not acknowledge wins by the Cesspool when they were using "non students" for quite a few of those 86 wins - particularly during the Hugh Durham and Jim Harrick eras. But, I digress.
The Cesspool, coming off exams (insert little snicker here..."how much does a 3 pt field goal count?), is 4-3 on the season. They are 4-2 at their dungeon and 0-1 on the road. Their 2 home losses were each by 2 pts to Chattavegas and Kansas State. They follow this game up with another home game against an ACC foe when Clemson travels to Hell this upcoming Tuesday evening (7pm tip, SEC Network).
Tech has now moved up to #60 in the RPI with the impressive win over VCU Tuesday night. Our RPI SOS is ranked 89th. The Cesspool is currently 66 in the RPI but a much stronger RPI SOS at 8th.
This is a huge game for both teams obviously. A win by the Good Guys provides an excellent opportunity with 3 winnable home games left after this one in December to achieve a 11-2 overall record before heading into the brutal ACC schedule in January. Not to mention, Tech would be riding a 7-game winning streak given that scenario.
The Cesspool has 4 guys averaging scoring in double figures with 6'8" Soph Fwd, Yante Maten, leading the team in scoring at 16.9 ppg and boards at 8.6 ppg. Should be a good match in the paint with Tech's double-double machine, Chuck Mitchell, and Tech's other athletic bigs in Jacobs & White.
The other 3 leading scorers include seniors Kenny Gaines (14.1) and Charles Mann (10.3), who seem like they've been playing for the Cesspool for the past 17 years. 5'10" Jr. Guard, JJ Frazier, is the 3rd leading scorer on the team at 13.3 ppg and leads the team in assists dishing out 4 a game.
Gaines attempts 6 3-pt shots a game and is hitting at an impressive 47.6% clip on the season. We can't allow him to go off. Of the returning players this year, Gaines scored the most points (11) in their loss at the Enormous Jug last year. The last time Tech traveled to the dungeon, Charles Mann tossed in 24 and Gaines contributed 13 as the only 2 double-digit scorers in Tech's 80-71 win. Those 2 guys accounted for almost half of their scoring that day.
As has been mentioned in another thread, I expect the opening point spread to be very close once released later today (I'll update the thread with a reply once known). Like always when playing on the road, it is important to get off to a good start. Go Jackets! Let's make it 5 in a row, guys!!!!
