There has been a lot of talk about finding a head coach with deep connections in the Atlanta area. This is important and speculating which candidate has the best connections has been pretty much covered.

My question however, is about the actual NCAA rules regarding recruiting.

How much can head coaches recruit? school visits, AAU events, etc.

How much more is allowed with the assistants?

I hope Bobinski is asking about potential assistants and trying to review their credentials as well. I don't know the rules which is why I am asking, but it seems the majority of the connections are with the assistants.

I hope someone can summarize the specifics here.

Basketball is different from FB in the sense that you have far fewer targets so HC's can get more intimately involved in recruiting specific people. And, they do. Just like in-game coaching and practices, HC's are far more involved with one-on-one coaching of individuals than FB...which the vast majority is handled by AC's and Coordinators.

Having said that, they are the same in that the HC has a HUGE effect of even getting the attention of most targets to start with and both serve as the ultimate say in who is and who is not in scope as well as serving as the final finisher on all decisions.

I'm disappointed that Chad Dollar, who came to Tech with the reputation of being an Atlanta and Georgia AAU connection, didn't deliver nearly what we had hoped in bringing in local talent. He was good early on, but not much after that. His connections may have helped a transfer. Not sure. After the class of MGH-Bolden-RCJr., we lost a lot of talent from the ATL/GA to other programs that likely would have changed the course of events with CBG. However, Dollar was not the HC. He was brought in to be a lead recruiter. Ultimately, it is CBG's deal as CEO to blame.

I think we lost RCJr. because he didn't like the slow tempo pace CBG deployed. We probably lost a lot of potential recruits for the same reasons. So, why Dollar was probably doing everything he could to properly sell Tech, the kid has folks chirping in his ear of how ugly our basketball is/was. That's on the head coach.

To bee so far away in miles, yet so close to the situation of what reality has dealt us.

He made a few mistakes, like we all do in this crazy world, trying to get a few in that the Head Coach wasn't fully behind. Like you said, the C.E.O's responsibility. Tech is a "different place" and you lose some to other programs and we understand that. However, many, many to go around. Charlton Young knows our challenges, he would be fine too. So would Cliff Warren. We need a lead recruiter, an old hat/knowledge hoop man on the bench or in the chair(s). The third AC coach, ideally knows Tech intimately and played here. Young to middle aged is great!

BION, I think K's strategy today of recruiting is very Back to the Future of Cremins' thin gold line of the Tech glory days. Duke sells itself now so that has changed. But, I think K doesn't mind having a short bench ala Cremins, go for the 5* guys and give them 38-40 minutes a game. Play 'em until their tongues are dragging the ground.

Will be interesting to see if Tech's new CEO tries to build depth with 3* guys and develop them (that approach works too, though I think in the ACC you need some 4* and 5* talent to be in the upper echelon annually). Or, does he focus heavily like Cremins did and perhaps Ratface is doing now on a select group of 4* and 5* guys with the promise they will rarely come out and will not be recruited over as long as they state their intentions in advance of when they may leave early for the NBA.

The latter strategy changed Cremins as the 80's didn't see rampant early departures but changed when we got into the 90's. It is a high risk, high reward strategy. At Tech, it worked. I don't think we have a lot to lose at this point. The question now is can we attract a HC who can attract 4* and 5* talent in the Atlanta metro area (or wherever for that matter)?

after quickly reviewing the rules, it seems any new coach would have enough access to players so the recruiting should be able to get going pretty quickly. Developing relationships is important in recruiting and doing that quickly is hard because frankly it just takes time for players and parents to become comfortable with a staff and the vision.

Obviously, this won't be as hard for a college coach already in the mix, but an NBA coach would be starting way behind and I think if I am reading this correctly, the restrictions would not allow them to gain ground quickly. Just due to the # of contacts allowed.

Schools like Puke, Cheaters, Blue 'Cats, Kans-ass'es, pick and choose in hoops. What they leave on the table for scraps would be better than what most of us end up offering or taking. Exceptions to every rule.

There is no reason a staff can't take a few sweet leftovers to get going, a Grad. Trf. each year to supplement(maybe a few of them each of the first few seasons of the regime), some local stars, an out-of-state stud that has connections to our school since we have a national/international flavor with ex-players, grads., friends of the program.

I'd be willing to bet of all the names that have been thrown out there so far (and whether any or all of them or somewhere in between are actually on Bobinski's list isn't truly known), Jeff Capel is or has already been in on the local recruits more than any other. And, it perhaps is by a large margin. Of course, like Buzzforlife states, the name Duke will get you in the door very quickly.

Would you believe Mr. Jeff has been seen with the top six junior studs in this state. They laid off of one, won't offer him(K didn't even watch him play), and he already committed elsewhere. He really wanted them more than "going to the other eastern blue bloods, like Cheaters or Cats".

If Capel comes here, we might immediately lead Puke for Wendell Carter, Jr. It could end up being a war for a one and done. Think Dennis Scott, in terms of talent not the game. A battle we need to fight and show the others, no free passes at our rest stops. I've watched Pace Academy play, never witnessed a more dominant stud at that level. Saw Favors, Howard, et al, nothing like this NBA future star. Wonderful student, could be a Doctor. K knows such.

Another reason Duke will fight to keep Capel from leaving. I wonder if he's been approached with an offered pay raise yet?

looks like to begin with that coaches do more talking to coaches than actual players at least early on. There doesn't seem to be limits on how much a coach can talk to other coaches, Am I understanding this correctly?

Coaches are the conduits more than half the time. The difference is that in hoops it is normally with the AAU coaches and in FB it is with the HS coaches since AAU FB is essentially non-existent. Parents and support infrastructure are of course involved in all sports. Then, you have some that act like agents. Thinking of one particular drama-driven FB recruit we've discussed on this board multiple times...and he's not alone. There are plenty of slime tagging along with some of these guys with their hands out expecting something. From coaches to parents to siblings to friends to pastors, you name it.

As I've pointed out before, Cremins gave scholarships to friends of HS studs to get them to come to Tech. This isn't known by the vast majority of Tech fans or general public. Mark Price's HS buddy from Enid matriculated for free at Tech while serving as a team manager. Same for Dalrymple and Anderson. Dennis Scott's actually suited up at the end of the bench for Tech.

They will all be talking in Houston today with each other. Far as I know, they can talk during dead periods with each other.

JT622 will let you know for certain. Maybe he will tell me his favorite three sports? Hope I didn't offend him with my yoke in that thread. We are such a small group, however big enough to apologize. He has mine.

BAJ-Can you ask the boss on here if we can add PM's to the site in the future?

Reminder, I'm Buzzbomb on Swarm, Stngtalk and kjmc15 on Hive, should you need to personally tell me off. Wish my emoticons would work on here. Would place a happy face, right now!

Edited: Cremins found Clarence Moore and gave a schollie to a guardians' son, they had a gym in Lousiana at home.

You of course didn't offend me, mate. I thought you pretty much nailed it except ping pong has to be up there. :D

Bowling is the best sport to play. You get really cool shoes. Drink beer and eat wings & pizza. Sit down most of the time. Don't even have to keep score for yourself anymore which leads to less thinking and more time to drink beer. Get up, throw a ball down a lane, maybe do it again maybe not, sit down and drink. Perfect sport.

I think NIke and others are trying to turn 7 on 7's into an AAU conduit.

For Cremins, that makes sense, his philosophy was for the starters to get the majority of the minutes, the end of the bench was going to be unused, might as well use those slots to recruit your starters.

.

Last time I asked, I was told that was a decision at Rivals not a function to give at local forums. I must say that it is a very useful added benefit. But I don't know how they communicate with trouble makers since pm's aren't available.

Do you bring your own shoes or take a chance on a foot fungus(wear thick throw away socks)?

Recovering Type A's need to know. I did play a lot in younger days. Nailed a few 200 pt. games. Fun like Putt-Putt.

Seriously, only a true guess now...Basketball, Football, Baseball. However, since your Dad was so gifted at Baseball, that could fit in above third since you probably have the genes like I do. My Grandpa played Pro. ball in the day.

rarely do I not throw the ball twice in a single frame. Strikes are fun, I did get a king turkey one time. Still not sure how that happened, I think they accidentally put us on one of those lanes where the bottom of the pins were well rounded. or so that's what the league guys claim happens for them.
