Cincinnati Bengals’ Michael Johnson among spring graduates

THE FLATS – Sixty-two current and former Georgia Tech student-athletes took part in Georgia Tech’s 249th Commencement exercises Saturday at McCamish Pavilion.

Graduate ceremonies were held Friday, while undergraduate commencement was held throughout the day Saturday.

Included in Tech’s spring graduates are 21 graduating with an engineering degree, including 2015 ACC Men’s Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year Andrew Kosic. The chemical and biomolecular graduate from West Chester, Pa., was an NCAA All-American in both the 50 free and 100 free at the 2015 NCAA Championships. He was the ACC Silver medalist in the 100 free, won bronze in the 50 free and was fourth in the 100 fly. He set six school records last season in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, 400 free relay and 400 medley relay, and leaves Georgia Tech holding eight different school records.

Also among Saturday’s graduates were All-American golfers Anders Albertson and Ollie Schniederjans. Albertson was the 2015 ACC Co-Champion, while Schniederjans was the 2014 ACC Champion. Albertson won the 2015 Byron Nelson Award, which is given to the nation’s top senior golfer.

Four former football student-athletes – James Butler, Mike Cox, Will Heller and Michael Johnson – returned to The Flats to finish their undergraduate degrees. Butler was inducted into the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2014, while Johnson, currently with the Cincinnati Bengals, has spent his NFL offseasons in Atlanta working towards his degree completion.

Swimming’s Kate Brandus and track’s Cole Jackob were two of Georgia Tech’s ACC Postgraduate Scholarship recipients in February.

Three student-athletes – Aaron Peek (men’s basketball) Andrew Chau (football), and Alex Braxton (women’s track & field) – are walking in Saturday’s commencement exercises but will not complete their degree requirements until this summer.
