Well, 2 Jackets are coming off strong showings in Canada this past week. Matt Kuchar, yet again, knocks on the door and finishes in the top 10. Something he has been doing with regularity on the Tour the last 3 months. He finished tied for 9th, just 3 strokes back of winner, Jhonattan Vegas, who fired an 8-under 64 to finish -12 and seal the Canadian trophy. Kudos to Cameron Tringale who has been struggling most of this calendar year with a tie for 14th place finish as well.

This week sees the final major of the season at legendary Baltusrol GC in Springfield, NJ, just west of NYC-Newark. 4 Golfing J's will be competing this week with their tee times...

  • Roberto Castro (Thu 8:40am, Fri 1:55pm*)
  • Matt Kuchar (Thu 1:05pm, Fri 7:50am*)
  • Bryce Molder (Thu 2:15pm*, Fri 9:00am)
  • Cameron Tringale (Thu 2:05pm*, Fri 8:50am)

All 4 of these guys are in great shape to qualify for the upcoming FedEx series of tournaments starting in late August (and secure their Tour cards for next year to be joined by Ollie Schniederjans). Kooch will of course be traveling to Brazil to represent Team USA at the Olympics after this PGA Championship.

TNT will have live TV coverage on Thursday and Friday starting at 1pmET. CBS will have live weekend network coverage starting at 2pmET each day.

Thursday weather appears clear but scorching hot. Friday will be likely delays from t'storms as a cool front passes through. The weekend rounds will be much cooler (highs in mid 80's) with slight chance of storms.

Side note, as you know by now, Tech newbie Luke Schniederjans qualified for the US Amateur last week with the low 2-day rounds in Roswell. One Yellow Jacket, current rising junior, James Clark, is participating today and tomorrow in Newnan, GA. He finished Even today which will put him in contention for one of the qualifying slots tomorrow. I'm unsure how many slots are available. There were 4 in Roswell FWIW. The best finishing score as of 2:25pm is -2 with a bunch of guys at -1. Here's a leaderboard for reference... http://www.gsga.org/index.php/competitions/PairingResult/Stroke/2957/729

Good luck to James as he tries to join Luke in getting to the 116th version of the US Amateur Championship - this year August 15-21 at Oakland Hills CC in Bloomfield Township, Michigan.

edit note: low score for Rd 1 in Newnan is -4. 2 guys at -2. And, 5 at -1. These are just for the morning's rounds. Afternoon rounds kicked off just after noon. James will need to throw a low score up there most likely tomorrow to get into the top 4 or 5 and contention to qualify for one of the spots.

Hopefully my jinxing abilities only apply to Kooch when posting good news about him during a round, but good news thru the front 9 for James Clark this morning who has posted a 3-under 32 at the turn of his 2nd round. Though other scores are trickling in and may similarly be well in the red at the turn, this puts Clark in solid position to contend for one of the qualification spots at Newnan during his back nine today.

Go James!!

Looks like James finished -2 and has him solidly tied for 2nd place with 1 other golfer. If they have 4 spots, he's in.

Not a good 1st day for GJ's so far at the PGAC...

  • Kooch is +5 thru 8 holes...2 double bogeys so far
  • Castro finished +2
  • Tringale and Molder are both Even after a couple of holes early in their rounds...hopefully at least one of those two guys will get in the red today
Leader in the clubhouse is at -5.

Looks like Castro is coming up on a putt that could move the cut line from +2 to +1.

Castro is in the first group off this morning as he barely made the cut. Though, his first two rounds were far better than Molder and Kuchar, who uncharacteristically missed a cut. Tringale is the top GJ at Even par. For that, he has to walk around with Bubbles Watson today and his corn cob up his ass walk.

All 4 of these guys are in great shape to be in the 125 FedEx Standings leather in a month when that stretch run begins at the Barclays event in Farmingdale, NY (Aug 25-28).
