Duke and Tech have met on the gridiron every year since 1933. That is the 2nd longest continuous running opponent for the Jackets. Tech and Georgia have played one another every year since 1925 - and yes Georgia, that DOES include 1943 and 1944!!!!

It has been difficult over the past 25 years to call this series a "rivalry" though. Ever since Steve Spurrier left Duke for his alma mater, Tech has pretty much dominated it. Tech leads the series 50-31-1. Duke also represents Tech's 3rd most frequently played opponent with those 82 meetings. Only Georgia (109) and Auburn (92) have faced Tech more. And with Auburn nowhere to be found on Tech's future regular season schedule, unless we face the Tigers in a postseason game, we can see Duke taking over that 2nd spot in a decade.

Since 1990, Tech has a 22-3 record over the Blue Devils. After the 1989 season that saw Duke crowned as co-ACC champs (with Virginia), Spurrier departed and Tech won a national title the following season in 1990. However, after that 1989 win by Spurrier and Duke, the all-time series was dead even at 28-28-1.

David Cutcliffe made some comments to the press in the lead up to the game last year in Atlanta regarding how elite wide receivers don't want to play in Paul Johnson's offense. He then expanded his commentary to defensive linemen and other positions as well. Then, the Dukies marched onto Grant Field and defeated Tech in Tech's worst played game of all of 2014. Johnson's first loss to the Blue Devils in his 7 years at Tech. I figure the Jackets will have this game circled and owe the Dukies some payback at Rutgers - Durham Campus this fall. Tech will be coming off a big game at South Bend.

Duke should be 3-0 entering this game as they play at Tulane and then home vs NC Central and Northwestern. This is the only conference game on this date. So, it should get good TV coverage. Unless the networks use one of their 6-day announcement options (and that is unlikely because several of the ACC's heavyweights are off on Sep. 26...Clemson, FSU, Miami, etc.), the kickoff time and TV will be announced prior to Tech's game at Notre Dame.

Tech and Duke have tied once in its 82 game series. Back on November 1, 1951, Tech entered the game ranked #5 in the nation and was 6-0 when they hosted unranked Duke on homecoming. The game ended in a 14-14 tie. Take a look at some highlights...

That was the only blemish on Tech's 1951 schedule as the Jackets went on to win a SEC title (going 7-0), finishing 11-0-1 while defeating Baylor in the Orange Bowl 17-14 and finishing ranked 5th in the country.

Perhaps the Jackets can not only pay the Dukies back for last year's upset loss at home, but sooth the ghosts of Tech's 1951 past at the same time.

Will this be the first time GT has used the new visiting locker room at Wallace Wade?

The have removed the track and in process of adding more seats to the stadium. amazing considering the lack of ticket demand.

Random factoid of the day...

...the last time Duke defeated Tech in consecutive seasons was during a 3-game winning streak between 1987 and 1989. Of course, Tech did not win but 1 game over a D1A opponent in the '87 and '88 seasons combined. The Dukies hung the "WELCOME TO THE BASEMENT, TECHIES!" banner at Wallace Wade in 1987. That's the game Bobby Ross was in tears during the postgame radio broadcast with Big Al Ciraldo in the silent Tech locker room when he apologized to the Tech fanbase for the dominant loss Tech endured that day...48-14. That was the infamous game where Ross and staff realized Curry's guys had quit on him and the new staff. Ross did not specifically single out that particular game but he did reference Curry's guys being extremely loyal to the previous regime and how they did not take to Boss Ross and staff in that 1987 season during the TV show 'Driven: Georgia Tech's 1990 National Championship Season'.

Tech of course started the '89 season 0-3 and had lost 14 straight ACC games before breaking thru against Maryland. A 3-game winning streak ensued before losing our final game of the season at WWS falling short, 30-19, to the ACC co-champions Dukies (and Visor Boy). Tech won its last 4 that year to finish 7-4 and did not go to a meaningless exhibition game in late December. That was the precursor to a national title season the following year. As mentioned in the OP, we have gone 22-3 over Rutgers-Durham over the past 25 years though the all-time series was tied heading into the 1990 game.

I think this is the first game for GT in the new locker room. Seems like the old one would take most of halftime to hike through, beyond that end zone and practice field. They finally supplied golf carts the last few times we went there.

GTJT-Thanks for putting the series in perspective. I won a bet with a guy who doubted Visor Boy Supperior ever worked at Dook and votes for them in the preseason poll each year to show his appreciation. He was an Asst. Coach at GT, too, before becoming a HC at Sarah Duke HS Field. The bathroom used Mother Earth as flooring. I always felt like Portapotties at GT were a step up for a football game. Speaking of such, didn't the Mutts go to the Ga. Peach Bowl with a 6-5 record in '89 over us(and we beat them head to head, or brains to butts)?
