Duke and Tech have met on the gridiron every year since 1933. That is the 2nd longest continuous running opponent for the Jackets. Tech and Georgia have played one another every year since 1925 - and yes Georgia, that DOES include 1943 and 1944!!!!
It has been difficult over the past 25 years to call this series a "rivalry" though. Ever since Steve Spurrier left Duke for his alma mater, Tech has pretty much dominated it. Tech leads the series 50-31-1. Duke also represents Tech's 3rd most frequently played opponent with those 82 meetings. Only Georgia (109) and Auburn (92) have faced Tech more. And with Auburn nowhere to be found on Tech's future regular season schedule, unless we face the Tigers in a postseason game, we can see Duke taking over that 2nd spot in a decade.
Since 1990, Tech has a 22-3 record over the Blue Devils. After the 1989 season that saw Duke crowned as co-ACC champs (with Virginia), Spurrier departed and Tech won a national title the following season in 1990. However, after that 1989 win by Spurrier and Duke, the all-time series was dead even at 28-28-1.
David Cutcliffe made some comments to the press in the lead up to the game last year in Atlanta regarding how elite wide receivers don't want to play in Paul Johnson's offense. He then expanded his commentary to defensive linemen and other positions as well. Then, the Dukies marched onto Grant Field and defeated Tech in Tech's worst played game of all of 2014. Johnson's first loss to the Blue Devils in his 7 years at Tech. I figure the Jackets will have this game circled and owe the Dukies some payback at Rutgers - Durham Campus this fall. Tech will be coming off a big game at South Bend.
Duke should be 3-0 entering this game as they play at Tulane and then home vs NC Central and Northwestern. This is the only conference game on this date. So, it should get good TV coverage. Unless the networks use one of their 6-day announcement options (and that is unlikely because several of the ACC's heavyweights are off on Sep. 26...Clemson, FSU, Miami, etc.), the kickoff time and TV will be announced prior to Tech's game at Notre Dame.
Tech and Duke have tied once in its 82 game series. Back on November 1, 1951, Tech entered the game ranked #5 in the nation and was 6-0 when they hosted unranked Duke on homecoming. The game ended in a 14-14 tie. Take a look at some highlights...
That was the only blemish on Tech's 1951 schedule as the Jackets went on to win a SEC title (going 7-0), finishing 11-0-1 while defeating Baylor in the Orange Bowl 17-14 and finishing ranked 5th in the country.
Perhaps the Jackets can not only pay the Dukies back for last year's upset loss at home, but sooth the ghosts of Tech's 1951 past at the same time.
