The 17-13 Jackets host Pitt (20-9/9-8) on Senior Day at the Gigantic Boob. Pitt's loss in Blacksburg last night dropped their RPI 9 spots now to 48. Their RPI SOS is rated 38th nationally. They have no significant out of conference wins. Even with 20 wins under the belt, a loss at Tech Saturday places them nervously on the bubble and may need a win at the A.C.C.T. to qualify for the NCAAT. Joe Lunardi had them as an 8-seed in the NCAAT before losing last night at Va Tech. Losing at G.T. and then in their first game at the A.C.C.T. (read: 3 straight losses and 4 of their last 5) will not look good for the Panthers.

Having said that, I think we'll see a very motivated team knowing with a win Saturday, they very well may cash their ticket and ease the pressure a bit in Washington DC next week.

The game will be televised via the A.C.C. Network's set of affiliates. Here's the list... http://www.theacc.com/news/acc-basketball-on-acc-network-pitt-at-georgia-tech-03-05-2016

Tech is 0 for 3 against Pitt since they joined the A.C.C. We lost 2 years ago to them at home by 7. Lost by 5 at The Pete last year. Lost earlier this season at The Pete by 5. We can expect when the point spreads are released Friday afternoon for this game to open as a Pick 'Em.

Tech has plenty of motivation in addition to continuing to play well and taste winning here at the end of the season, improving the resume' for postseason, and Senior Day (mostly focused on MGH's Day). Tech and FSU are tied for the 10-seed. With Tech having the tie breaker with a head-to-head win in the lone game between the 2 this year, Tech controls our own destiny. Win and we get the 10-seed and avoid having to play on Day 1 against BC. Lose the game and we can still get it if Syracuse defeats FSU in Tallahassee. That Cuse-FSU game will be going on at the same time with a 2pm tip as well.

If Tech snags the 10-seed, we could play any of the 4 teams who are currently tied for 6th place at 9-8 which includes Pitt along with Clemson, Syracuse and Va Tech. Clemson may have the easiest path to 10-8 as they travel to winless BC...though the Eagles are knocking on the door for a W now (lost by 5 to G.T. last weekend and lost by 1 at NC State last night). The Hokies host a red hot Miami team, though the Hokies - winners of 4 straight - are pretty hot themselves. Va Tech, also 17-13 overall like G.T., are 6-2 at home versus the A.C.C. this season.

Regardless, Tech's mission is obvious. Win and we get the 10-seed and avoid Day 1. Tech has proven it can play with and beat anybody in the wide open A.C.C. While winning 4 games in 4 days is highly unlikely, winning 5 games in 5 days will be near impossible.

One more loss by B.C. Hoops....and they will be the first P5 team in the modern era not to win a conference game in football and basketball.

To think others in my circle(especially Buzzforlife himself), have been complaining about our programs. No, Bobster, you don't get a pass in this sidewalk speech.

Just an update on MGH moving up the all-time scoring ladder in Tech's history books...

...with a below-average scoring output of 9 pts at Louisville, MGH topped the 500-pt mark for the season now with 505. This moved his career scoring to 1,632 which has now passed BJ Elder (13th, 1616 pts) and Roger Kaiser (12th, 1628 pts).

With a potential NIT (aka MET - meaningless exhibition tournament) run and/or additional games at the A.C.C.T. too, it appears challenging Malcolm Mackey's 10th place spot at 1,736 could happen as long as Tech wins. He is a little over 100 points which means he needs probably 5 more games - season finale vs Pitt, 2 games at the A.C.C.T. (hopefully more obviously) and 2 games in a MET - and average a little over 20 ppg...very do"able" if he can get the games in.

Note, the 11th spot held by Tony Akins at 1,658 is 26 pts out of reach at the moment and will likely be surpassed either via a(nother) monster effort on Senior Day against Pitt this weekend or during the 1st game of the A.C.C.T. Recall, MGH had to unfortunately miss the A.C.C.T. last year with a late season foot injury.

Is an ACC tourney title our only path to the big dance now, or would a win over Pitt plus two or three in D.C. be enough? I have paid zero attention to the selection process the past five years (for obvious reasons) so I'm not up to date on what floats the committee's boat these days. Interestingly, the Louisville loss bumped us up on ESPN's BPI and we are an at-large bid by that metric (which I suppose tells you how meaningless that number is for selection purposes).

Like all bubble teams, what happens in the mid-major tournaments has a huge bearing - especially for teams on the weak side of the bubble. Right now, I don't even think we are on the weak side of the bubble.

Defeat Pitt and win 2 games at the A.C.C.T.? Move to the strong side of the bubble. Get to Saturday's title game and we are in, IMO. Still though, even with 3 straight wins and a semifinal appearance, we may be rooting against upsets in other tournaments.

It is all moot if we don't get the job done Saturday of course. I *do* think a win Saturday likely moves us into close to a lock situation of being selected for the NIT MET.

Can't wait for the MEG, within the MIT(Indivitational)/MET! Thanks for all of the acronyms!!

MEAT=Meaningless Exhibition Attrocious Tourney(non-NIT)? I would rather become a vegetarian.

GT needs to grab this first conference win from Pitt.

Good luck guys. Finish the season strong and get ready for the tournament

The Pitt Post-Gazette highlights why winning Saturday is huge for the Panthers... http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/...C-road-loss-Georgia-Tech/stories/201603040088

The Panthers (20-9, 9-8 ACC) close the regular season Saturday at Georgia Tech before playing next week in the ACC tournament in Washington. While most of the national bracketologists who study RPI and try to predict the tournament field agree Pitt is in safe territory, they also agree the Panthers shouldn’t tempt fate by losing to the Yellow Jackets (17-13, 7-10) and losing in the first round of the conference tournament.

That’s because of Pitt’s weak non-conference schedule (ranked No. 176), lack of big wins (1-6 versus Top 25 in the RPI) and surprisingly pedestrian record against the Top 150 in the RPI (11-9).

Pitt is beatable.

I really wish Marcus had gotten about 15 points or more last game. I want to hear the career points announcement on senior night that he was in 11th place. Now, he'll need an above average game to make it then.

Pitt doesn't play defense nearly as well as Louisville. Then again, few teams take pride in their D as much as UofL does. I expect an up-and-down fast-paced high-scoring game tomorrow. Fun one for the fans in the Enormous Melon. Hence, I further believe MGH has the potential to score near 30 pts if he is on. UofL smothered him and cut off his driving lanes...pretty successfully. Pitt may try to do the same, but I don't think they will be nearly as successful at it that the Escort Service Academy was.

Here's a trivia nugget for you...

...in the CBG era, Tech has only lost twice when scoring 80 or more points in regulation 40-minutes time.

We lost at UNC in CBG's first year, 93-81. We lost at Pitt earlier this year, 89-84.

(note, we did lose to NC State on a last second shot at home last season, 81-80, but that was in overtime)

3 G.T. recruiting mentions with HS juniors in the Virginia Independent Schools playoffs... https://www.alexandrianews.org/2016...nament-features-multiple-division-i-recruits/

(note, this is where the big timers in the state of VA often are found)

O’Connell will rely on junior center Nate Watson, who has offers from Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Old Dominion, and multiple schools from the Atlantic 10 and Pac-12.
...
Paul VI’s point guard, Aaron Thompson, has a slew of offers and just made a visit to Vanderbilt this past weekend. Other schools interested in the junior include Georgia Tech, Miami, Virginia Tech, George Mason, Richmond, and Virginia Commonwealth.
...
In Division III, a newcomer to the Association, Virginia Academy comes to the semifinals as the #5 seed. They are led by junior center Ejike Obinna, who has multiple offers from the ACC and the Atlantic 10, including Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami (Fla.), Virginia Tech, George Mason, Rhode Island, St. Joseph’s, Temple and Xavier.

I agree. I've got the Jackets winning this game.

I also like the Hokies getting 6.5 at home tomorrow against the Canes. I like BC getting 8.5 at home against the Orangenecks.

I'll lay a unit on the Noles laying 3 at home against the Orange. I'll lay a point with the Cheaters at Rutgers-Durham. Finally, I'll lay the 6 with the French on Brogdon and his buddies' Senior Day here in God's Country over the Escort Service Academy.

edit note: I like the Hokies winning outright so I may lay a wager on the ML on that game as well

Can we have a love fest on Sr. Day for MGH? He adapted to his class bailing out for one reason or another, leaving him with the Hometown/Southside Transfer Squad.

What he has accomplished without steady, complimentary components around him of A C C caliber is simply un-bee-lievable! May have saved CBG with his job, given him another chance.

Well, it wasn't the high-scoring affair I expected, but a gutty win. The defense was about as good as I've seen from our guys down the stretch all season long. Nice job, Jackets!!

10-seed and opening on Wednesday is ours.

VT is up by 17 on Miami with 7 minutes remaining. If that score holds I believe we get Clemson in the ACC tourney.

Yep. Buzz Williams deserves A.C.C. COTY. Glad we are facing Clemson and not the Turkey Buzzards. They have been playing lights out.

Also glad I laid some coin today on the Hokies getting pts and on the Hokies ML. Woohoo!!

Nice score with the Hokies on the ML! Now let's win two or three in D.C.!!

Ugggghhh....just wish we had those 2 last second losses to ETSU and Va Tech back. We'd be 20-11/9-9 and banging on the March Madness door to let us in.

But, it is what it is. We need to kick Clemson's ass and advance.

If we don't make the NCAAT, I think we are in great shape now to play in the NIT MET. The Cesspool hurt Alabama's chances of the NCAAT today beating them at the Stegasaurus. The SECT is wide open so the Cesspool has a chance there.

Speaking of chances, what's the chance Tech and the Cesspool face one another somehow in the NIT MET? Just something to keep an eye on down the road.

For now, let's go win the damn A.C.C.T.

The biggest source of frustration I feel as a fan is the ineffective PG rotation that we stuck with way too long. If the change was made before starting ACC play, I think we would be firmly in the field of 68 today. As an outsider, it's difficult to understand what Brain Gregory was thinking.

We got a mention in this tourney selection article for being the highest ranked BPI team not in Lunardi's top 76.

"The Yellow Jackets are 17-13, having faced the fourth-hardest schedule in Division I. Six of their losses have been by five points or fewer, including both of their games against BPI No. 5 Louisville. Against BPI top-100 teams, Georgia Tech is 8-12."

Congratulations on the win. I know the team is excited.

I believe Clemson will be their first game. It'll be a challenge. I don't believe this is the best match-up for GT.
